Gaff - How fast?

Forget all the hype and love fest with this guy, West Coast will ruin him early on and his confidence will be shot to pieces by round 10 if we play him.

i agree. and the rest of our list is shit, and we will never ever ever win another premiership. because i'm a true west coast eagles supporter.

Anyone seen him live can answer?

You cant really judge by TV.

I was leaning on the fence right next to the WC interchange last week at the Freo/WC scratch match and he isn't super quick, but he appears faster than he is due to fitness, toward the end of the game he was still running at the same pace as the beginning and looked faster when a lot of players were looking a bit tired if that makes sense. Also not afraid to use his voice, was standing on the boundary on his own screaming for Dalziell to kick it to him and Dazzle looked up, realised Gaff was on the boundary, line doubted his chances of shanking the kick and kicked to a contest in the square. Gaff was not impressed.

Still wont ever forget that he ducked his head against the Hawks though.

Ok everyone here knows I'm a "Negative,Pessimistic Supporter" but I do really love this club. Last year when I was so convinced we were on the up and got disappointed hard core when we didn't I decided to be less expectant....sadly along with this kind of mindset comes the realization of the inevitability of failure.

I had this heated argument with a guy I work with the other day, he said we would be lucky to beat Gold Coast with their best 22. I said how come you think that, he said that in his opinion all the bottom teams including Essendon have improved beyond the Eagles.

Sadly I had no argument...someone give me some ammo for the next time I see him please ? ( He is a Pies Supporter btw )

It's a simple argument really, how do they know how much the other teams have improved? Yes, they're a pies supporter, so they know all, I understand that. :p We lost by 4 goals to the pies, so I guess they'll be joining us down the bottom then. :D

You could sleep with his sister, mother, aunt, cousins etc and hang that on him. But that would just be par for the course for a collingwood family so i'm not sure.

One word. Shuey.

Spektre... you aernt seriously saying that you need help to dish out crap on a Collingwood supporter?

Tell him he probably supported Carlton untill the flag last year.

So you haven't noticed how cocky they are now ? this guy I work with acts like they won the last 20 flags and how unbeatable they are now....pretty hard to argue with that after they smashed the Saints in GF #2.

I agree with Ghoss.... our team is shit.

I have never watched any team turn the ball over and just sap the energy out of the game like we do. It's like... "yeah watching it loving it, go eagles, keep it up" and then like.... lynch will kick it straight to the opposition player standing all alone and they get a goal. And i just groan and sink back into my chair drained of all enthusiasm.

I'll still cheer for them every game... But GOD they make it difficult sometimes.

As for Gaff...

I always thought he was the Long distance type and scored well in the draft camp for the 3km rather then the 20m? But i seem to recall him doing well in everything...

Without running him down... i would have liked Polec, or even Heppel instead. I know it sounds bad.. but we have to much of the "same player". Mid sized, not fast, can't break lines blah blah blah. What players do we have that are gangly? Or can take players on, like gilbert or hill or nathan krak? Negative in the pace department people.

Your logic makes no sense. Gaff ran faster than Polec. Heppel is not that fast either, certainly not a 'line breaker'. Did you even watch any of the u18 games?

Na just disregard there flag completely.

Who needs two chances to win a flag anyway? against the decades biggest chockers no less.

While these sprint times obviously give some indication of a persons acceleration over 20m I wonder if the differences are over hyped. Take the difference between someone who does 2.8 which is supposed to be really quick and someone who does 3sec (not so impressive). Now take a stop watch or the stop watch on your watch or phone and and snap the start stop button as fast as you humanly can and you'll get a reaction time probably of something like .11 - .20 sec. I think the fastest I've ever achieved is .09. Think about how fastest you had to snap you finger to achieve that interval of time, for argument sake the .2 second time interval, and that is how much later the person who runs a 3sec 20m will arrive at that mark compared to someone who does 2.8sec. A difference true but minute in reality. The speed shown on the field is obviously going to come down to more than just a snap of the fingers difference to 20m.

I may well be wrong but I wouldn't have the thought the 20m sprint time was the be all and end all of speed on the field by any means.

I reckon one of the final instructions he would have got before that NAB game would have been along the lines "Just go out there and try and pick up the pace of the game, don't try anything heroic and don't take (physical) risks - you need to get the feel of the game at this level first, and that will take a few decent hit-outs"

Bottom line is this: I'd cut the kid a bit of slack on this one. I'd also add that I'd much prefer any new kid be required to play a few games of seniors at WAFL/VFL level before being exposed to AFL straight out of under 18's. The bigger bodies and quicker pace is a very big step up.

I backed the Pies pre-season last year at $12 for the Premiership. Their 2010 list was a fair bit deeper than their current 2011 list, and yet they are quoted at $3 this year - go figure ! I think they will probably finish top 4, but won't get the money this year. At this time last year everyone thought Geelong were certainties too - at about $3. Things change, and going back to back is becoming ever more difficult.

Final instructions or not I still think it says a lot about the kids character, there's a reason we all love Beau Waters and it's not his kicking efficiency. You can't teach that kind of inherent mental toughness and attitude.

Gaff got scared when he heard the footsteps, I have no doubt he'll be a fantastic player and I hope he becomes a 200 game player for us, but he'll never be my favourite now. Harsh maybe, but it's just the kind of player I like to watch is more of the Jono Brown, Selwood, Shuey, Dangerfield disregard for their own safety all that matters is that I get my hands on the pill kind of mentality.

Shuey pulled out of a contest twice in a game late last year.

? polec didnt go to the combine. Heppell ran faster than gaff. your saying gaff ran faster than polec who is undoubtedly a line breaker.

Polec would be the fastest of these 3 quite comfortably i believe.

Polec is not that fast, he has tested in the 3.1s

Are you sure about that? He looks like he would run a 2.9 to me. Shuey pace.

Yes i'm sure. We even had this discussion last year. There is really not much pace difference between Gaff, Polec and Heppell. They all play the game about the same speed. I believe Gaff was the preferred option because of his elite endurance which is an increasing consideration with the new interchange rules.

about chad fletcher fast i reckon
anyway its not all about speed
we all now know its the swerve factor and crazy angles
thanks to the poster from the alternate universe

I grew up watching Subi every week when I was a kid and there was a bloke out there called Peter Featherby - God he looked slow but he had the swerve factor and crazy angles to fall back on, he was a champion footballer.
GE is not as mad as people think.

No i think he is. I also think that most of the time he actually knows exactly what he's talking about and is on the money. Maybe a bit much lynch love but he does ohk. All geniuses are a little mad.
