Game of the Year - An award the game needs

Ahhh that game. Geelong vs St Kilda in 2009 is easily one of the most exciting games that I've seen. I just couldn't believe how good it was. From the build up to the final siren. I would honestly say that it was the best home and away game that I've seen and probably includes most finals too.
Greatest non-final I have ever seen.

Crap idea to have an award - firstly the decision is highly subjective and secondly I dont think anybody who plays or coaches would be interested in the award. Would all the players from both teams get a medal?

It's a good topic for no discussion, actually scratch that, it's a fantastic topic for discussion, but an award? No.

I like the idea in theory, but who do you give the award to? The teams that participated? The team that won that game? Players? Coaches? The Presidents? I don't think a public vote would be any good because the clubs with bigger fan bases will skew the results. Not sure how it would work and might be better done by a media outlet than the AFL. I can't see the players caring about it that much, and there's so many dumb trophies and awards they get anyway.

Best home and away games I've ever seen is that 2009 Gellong V Saints game, absolutely incredible!

2006 WCE V Geelong - the comeback game, definite bias but it was brutal, strong tackles, bit of hatred both ways, Cousins being picked off around the ground, Mooney pushing Hunter into the fencing and Kerr's last quarter .... from a comeback point of view was amazing.

Also 2004 WCE V Essendon, the Hird hugs a fan game. Hird dominated the last quarter, they went goal for goal throughout the night and it was a high scoring shootout with some superstars performing at their absolute best!

Great idea! I don't think there needs to be any presentation or reward for the participating teams, just an official acknowledgement of the best game for the season. How about some nominations that didn't involve tight finishes, like Collingwood v Adelaide 2011?

2010
Game of the Year: St.Kilda vs. Hawthorn (R17). A draw. Vividly recall thinking it was game of the year at the time. Stand by it now.
Honourable Mentions: Geelong vs. Hawthorn (R15), Fremantle vs. Geelong (R3), Melbourne vs. Collingwood (R12), North Melbourne vs. Essendon (R17), Hawthorn vs. WB (R14)
Notable Finals: St.Kilda vs. Geelong (QF), Sydney vs. Carlton (EF)
Surely the drawn GF deserves a mention?

2004
Essendon vs. West Coast (R3)

2004: Notable finals Port Adelaide V St Kilda

The round 6 Saints 5-0 v defending premiers Brisbane in front of 52k went alright too

The Brownlow or Norm Smith or even the Rising Star aren't already majorly subjective? Any award chosen by individuals is going to be subjective.

As for medals, no. Just a trophy or a plaque to each club to go in the cabinet.

I assumed a selection of media and former players would vote on it. As above, Norm Smith/Rising Star is done by a small selection of them and is usually accurate enough.

I like the idea but you couldn't possibly have a cash award. It would create the opportunity for match fixing.

Anything you can bet on is a opportunity for match fixing.

Ooh, good call. Now you've brought it up I remember that last quarter well. Thought the Pies were cooked at 3/4 time and was blown away by the way they saw it out.

Surely the drawn GF deserves a mention?

Yeah, I was lazy with 2010 and left out finals at first, but I've left Grand Finals out of the notables because everyone remembers them and knows whether they were good. The drawn GF would've been game of the year.

Honestly, best way it could be handled would be to open up the games to vote each round, like Mark/Goal of the Year, and then vote from the remaining pool (23 I guess) at the end of the year. Every option for the selection of games has its pros and cons but I think opening it up to the general public would create the best responses. Generally people aren't too biased when it comes to what is a great game or not.

Great idea really. There doesn't need to be a real award as such, Just a fun thing to have, maybe have an internet and SMS voting option. Also might be able to wrangle it as a Season opener/blockbuster the next year and generate some rivalry.

Would be good on Brownlow night to look back through all the classic games of the season. I would limit it to H&A games as well.

Hasn't been a year for memorable games so far. Best two would probably be from Round 3, Western Bulldogs v Richmond and North Melbourne v Port Adelaide. Two awesome games.

What a surprise...

Yeah the worst umpired game since the last time we played you?

How is that a game of the year?

There's a reason there are more Hawthorn and Geelong games, and that's because those two teams have been the two best teams of the last 6 or 7 years

no offense but Hawthorn played a terrible style when it was labelled 'unsociable'. You only have to look at the 2008 grand final to see how the rushed behinds rule was effectively reviewed the year after.
Hawthorn did not start playing a high attacking style until at least 2011 when you became a serious challenger after the 2008 win.

Don't lump your club in with Geelong on the back of 2-3 years of excellent footy ;)
