Tigers to stick as Kangas fall
10 May 2005 Herald Sun
Garry Lyon

A THIRD of the season gives us enough evidence to try to come up with an answer to some of the most asked questions of the year.
Great defender: Darren Gaspar's return to form has been criticial to the Tigers' winnings ways.

Can Richmond sustain its form and retain its position in the eight?

Did the Kangaroos catch the competition napping at the start of the year, and are they about to be exposed as a good, ordinary side destined to be inactive in September?

I have seen the Tigers play live only twice. I watched them get smashed by Geelong in the first game of the season, and on Saturday I saw them smash Carlton. The turnaround was quite remarkable, and I'm not talking about the scoreboard.

The first thing that strikes you is Richmond's skill level. You can do all of the tactical planning you like, but if you can't execute the plan then it is a simple waste of time.

Much has been written about the "ugly" nature of today's game. And a lot of it has to do with players tending to look sideways when they win possession.

And the main reason they do it is because it's the "safest" place to go.

If your field kicking is not up to scratch, then kicking wide is your security blanket. If you kick the ball too far in front of the leading player, then there is no immediate down side, because the ball will either run towards the boundary line and eventually be picked up by the player, or trickle over the line for a throw in.

It won't show up in the turnover column, and while it won't thrill the key-position forwards, in the eyes of many players it is a far better result than having the ball in the hands of the opposition.

Neale Daniher used to say, "own the corridor and you own the game". It is so right. It is the most valuable real estate on the field. And it isn't cheap. You pay for it with your courage to bring the ball back into the middle, with your skill to get it there and with the cooperation of every player.

The Tigers owned a lot of it on Saturday. And they did it because the likes of Chris Newman, Joel Bowden, Kane Johnson, Nathan Brown and Mark Coughlan were skilful and brave enough to look inside and hit targets.

Once possession is taken in the middle of the ground, the field becomes a forward's oyster and a defender's nightmare. Richardson, Simmonds, Stafford and Brown can lead to the left, the right, straight up the middle, or demand the ball long to the goalsquare.

The improvement in the Tigers' foot skills was evident when they went forward. The supply was first rate, the forwards were hungry to present because they knew they were better than even money to get it and the relative predictability of the entry allowed Andrew Krakouer to position himself for any spillage. Five goals for him, 23 for the team. Pretty simple.

Of course, it helps if you have a bit of "star" power at work. The Tigers have it in a couple of different guises. Richo and Darren Gaspar have All-Australian honours to boast about when they are old and finished. Whereas in the past that may have seemed imminent, it now seems some way off. Gaspar's return to form is timely, and critical. He made a mess of Lance Whitnall on the weekend.

Teams that play in finals need a dragon slayer. Tredrea, Brown, Pavlich and Gehrig are the big fire-breathers. Gaspar looks ready for that challenge.

Coughlan is a star. So is Brown. It makes such a difference when you have that quality of player. Coughlan's return has allowed Brown to spend more time forward, where he does his most damage. Add the youth and pace of Deledio, Tambling and Krakouer and the Tigers are well on the way to a September showing.

If that eventuates, the biggest star of all may well be found in the coach's box. Terry Wallace has done a remarkable job with last year's wooden spooners.

Which brings us to the Roos. Undefeated two weeks ago, they are now sitting 5-2 and looking a little vulnerable. Mind you, losses to Adelaide and Port at AAMI Stadium are not reasons to hit the panic button. But on closer scrutiny, the five wins have not been enough to generate the respect they covet.

Their first victim, Carlton, as each week goes by gives us more reason to think that the Wizard Cup is merely an experimental free-for-all as most sides prepare for the real season. The Blues seem a long way off. The Swans were next, and they are having an ordinary season, but St Kilda was a victory of merit, regardless of the fact it was short of some of its superstars.

Collingwood is nothing to brag about and the Hawks, while respectable, have won only one game. Of that group, only St Kilda is in the eight.

Still to come for the Roos are West Coast, Melbourne, Geelong, Richmond and Fremantle, five of the top six sides.

Throw into the mix the Bulldogs at Telstra Dome on Saturday, a side desperate to replace the Roos in the eight, and the Brisbane Lions up at the Gabba. It's a tough two months for Laidley's boys.

They just don't seem dangerous enough when they go forward. Sav Rocca is all or nothing, and there appears to be more "nothing".

Nathan Thompson looked more threatening in the ruck on the weekend, Drew Petrie is not a big goalkicker and Eddie Sansbury is finding his feet. They are missing Daniel Motlop, who won't be back soon.

Too much falls on the shoulders of Shannon Grant, Brent Harvey and Corey Jones to get their goal tally up from the 10-11 range, to the 15-16 required.

I don't think the Kangaroos will make the eight. It is not a lack of respect. I admire their tenacity and unity. I just don't think they are good enough.

This coming from a man, who played for an average football team, and from a bloke that was a hinderance to his team, because he was always injured, and from a bloke who never won a premiership. The Knob

I assum he's only seen us live twice, as the Collingwood and Port games were the only ones he's commentated.

We were ordinary both of those games. Its funny what he said about Sav - "mostly nothing". Will like to see the big Sav roost 10 past his beloved Demons up in Canberra.

Mountains out of molehills.

It's one man's opinion, and he justified it. Who cares?

You don't win respect seven games in, you win it by sticking it out and making the finals.

And how many AFL flags have you played in ? None? Yes, but I bet you still have strong opinons on the game!

I don't get this paranoia that people have on here everytime somebody in the media dares to criticise us. If you take the blinkers off, I think you'll find he makes some reasonable points. I find it hard to argue against his summation actually.

I hope we make the finals, and reckon we can too.....but do we need to throw a tantrum everytime somebody dares to suggest otherwise. Get over it.

What have you taken offence too in this article exactly?

Most of his comments are fair enough, and if you read through the threads this week, most of his comments have already been agreed upon in some form or another:-

The teams we beat aside from the Saints also have big ???'s beside them.
Petrie can't-hasn't been kicking goals.
Thomos' been ok in the ruck, but our ruck is struggling.
Sav is hot and cold.
Sansbury will be dropped this week.
The goal kicking falls to a select few week in week out.
We play five of the six top sides in coming weeks.

You can only earn respect by winning against these good teams.

I would rather come back to this article after the Rd 13 game against Freo and prove him wrong...but at the moment it should pinned to Arden St changeroom locker doors as a good motivational tool.

he has said a lot of things that have been written on this board by Kangas fans.

what's the problem????

For the record I always enjoy Lyon's comments, don't always agree but he usually has a very good things to say.

i totally agree.. i cant understand why people get so ********ed off with comments in the media either.
if we really believe that our side is perfect and going to win premierships very soon, then we are fooling ourselves.
it is desperately important that we recognise where our weaknesses lay and then attempt to rectify them. and if some are pointed out thru the media then so be it.
i dont know what the answer is for the roos. we keep on playing with lots of guts and spirit and end the season near the middle. and therefore get average draft picks and find it difficult to get that shot in the arm ie. top draft pick/key player to take you to the next level.
and yet we cant afford and i dont want us to flounder at the bottom of the ladder.
i heard brereton make a comment a couple of weeks ago about the hawks. that he would prefer them to get less than five wins and get bonus draft picks.

i would hate to think how many members we would have now if we hadnt won our first five games..

i believe roo members should count double because i am sure they love their club more than anyone else...

Gary Lyon has made an early call on us in much the same way as others in the media have made early calls about Brisbane and Port Adelaide and Richmond. Were only a third of the way through the season so almost anything can happen. In theory (not logic) Collingwood could still finish top and West Coast bottom........

Most had us finishing between 8-12 at the start of the season with the majority of the media picking us in the bottom 6. I'd say a fair assessment of where were looking at finishing at this early stage would be somewhere between 6 and 10. IMO Lyon's assessment of where were at and his comments about our players are not too far off the mark.

been thinking about the article. Dean said he hopes the media get stuck into his players this week, like the media did with adelaide and port. You just never know, if dean had asked for a favour to Lyon...... THe article was suppose to be about the tigers not the roos but it looks like he just added the roos part in.

I agree with a lot of what Lyon says actually . Our forward line is not good enough and we probably don't have enough top players in our side to press the better teams. I thought that was obvious.
As far as Sav Rocca goes if we have to rely on him up forward to kick a winning score then we are in serious trouble. Rocca only ever plays well for one quarter then is very quiet for the rest. And that is on a good day. I think Thompson could be the answer though as he has been impressive so far this season and is the only forward capable of taking big marks. It's always a challenge to see where North will get goals from and is usually left to Grant , Jones and M.Stevens. If Petrie can extract his finger then we may have some chance of beating some decent teams but at this stage we have beaten only one decent team. Collingwood almost beat us FFS.
Our midfeild is below average and we desperately need Harvey to realise that his best was a long time ago and it's time to reproduce some form that resembles his high rating.

We could still play finals footy and if we don't it will be a huge disappointment however we are a fair way off at the moment. Even the games we won weren't that convincing. We just don't look like a team that is amongst the best in the comp. We need to lift but perhaps we don't have the personel? I'll feel a lot more confident when Motlop comes back in.

Motlop will make a difference to our team when he comes back. I think he could play FF. I'd like to see how we'd go with a smaller forward line of say Motlop, Harvey, Grant, Corey Jones and perhaps the inclusion of Harding with Thompson at CHF.

agreed 100%! it's as if it has been dictated... was certainly my initial assessment of the article.

he's usually spot on i hate to say ppl!

And this is no exception. all our deficiency's outlined, stuff we on here have been saying prior to the collingwood game and now after 2 losses, its for all of us to see.

Still think we're missing junior a lot more than we and perhaps gary realise.
take any teams most dangerous forward out of their structure and they will struggle IMO.

Agreed 100%. Let's prove Eddie's side-kick wrong, starting this Saturday night!

I was just about to type this. This article is exactly what Laidley wanted, and if you would question why then you're probably one of the people paying out on our club right now.

If we firm as a top six team post round 11 then the plaudits will come. There might not be as many of them as we would like, but they will be there. In the meantime we've had our first couple of chances when the league was watching and we blew them. There are no excuses and we just have to get on with it.

Fair comment. Great to read encouraging support for GL article. Those who read that article as a slur are soft at heart. GL isn't a fool like the one who titled this thread.

We've only won 9 quarters to get to 5-0 so I can understand that he (GL) sees that as a 'downside' BUT the great upside is that North are playing armwrestle footy with much to do with accountability in our wins so far than he is willing to give us credit for. Let him write us off ... good on ya Garry. ;)

We need the kick in the bum as Scooby points out. JYD would encourage these articles. We've won 1 in the last 8 quarters and the Bulldogs won 3 of the 8 quarters in total of last season's games to collect 8 prem points. What more can be said except that facts don't lie and FOUR Winning QUARTERS of footy is what remains to be extracted this Saturday Night from the NMFC. Stand up or fall over.

I agree.

I wonder how he will go taking contested marks after the shoulder reconstruction - most players have greatly reduced capacity to take those strong contested marks after this type of injury. I am sure hoping this side of his game doesn't suffer - cause that's his great talent.

Can't wait to see him running around soon....
