The AFL has announced that Gold Coast and Carlton will be given access to state league players outside the draft:
CARLTON and Gold Coast will be given special "outside national draft" access to the top state league players as part of assistance packages signed off by the AFL Commission.

Under the plan, the bottom two teams from this season will be able to recruit, or on-trade, the state league players without giving up a draft pick.

It is believed the Blues and the Suns will have the right to on-trade the players they identify, in exchange for draft picks from other clubs.

While the AFL commission thrashed out the matter at today’s annual Brownlow Medal day meeting, it is understood full details of the assistance packages are still being analysed.

Apparently priority picks aren't enough "special assistance".

Why did you put special assistance in quotation marks?

Been reported by the Herald Sun that both Carlton and my own club were told they weren't getting a PP today. This is the only special assistance we're getting.

I'm also not sure why you'd be annoyed about this. These are mature players that have been overlooked in multiple drafts by every club or some de-listed from clubs in the past (depending on who is taken by either club). It's not like we're getting priority access to the best 16 or 17 year old's - these guys have been available for years.

These are the new priority picks. Clever work from the AFL to disguise it.

As I have posted elsewhere Carlton will pick Shane McAdam and trade him back to South Australia. He is the highest rated state league player, valued at 15-20, this years Tim Kelly. That will see them land McGovern, either straight up or as part of other deals.

Don't know what GC will do but they should be able to find 2 good mature players valued as 2nd round picks. If it was last year it would be Liam Ryan and Bayley Fitsch. If it was the year before it might've been Luke Ryan and Tom Stewart.

How many times do you need to be told McAdam is not rated as a 15-20 Pick player? Literally no where is he predicted to even go top 50. BS troll rumour that’s all folks.

I can see the advantage, but if there's a good enough state leaguer, preferably a Vic, in range we should pull the trigger. I'd much rather an AFL-standard player who can slot in straight away.

You, anyone else on bigfooty and any other draft gurus can tell me 1000 times because the person I heard it from out ranks them by the length of the Flemington straight.

The first step in what I told you would happen - allowing the priority access players to be traded - just came true today. If Carlton or the GC were going to keep their priority player(s) why would that stipulation be included?

We were only going to give it to the Crows for McGovern anyway. Probably a blessing in disguise. McGovern is very overrated. I'm not a fan of injury prone third talls.

I am pissed off that the AFL almost forced us into applying only to knock us back. Joke of an organisation.

Because it isn't just special assistance. IMO it's a tad bit unfair, but that was before I knew it would replace priority picks, which is actually the better outcome.

Same as above.

Completely defeats the purpose if they can just trade him straight away
I think the point then is they get an extra/earlier pick by trading it rather than bumping others down the order.

Generally I don’t mind it. Gives them a leg up without really shafting everyone else.

If they get a priority pick in addition that’s a joke.
