I seem to remember a number of teams being written off in the forum last year including United and The Marsh. If my memory serves me correctly (short term memory loss is an emerging problem), these two teams played off in the big one at the end of the year. I think the betting odds should start early this year and include other notable issues such as potential trophy winners, premiership teams, departures, arrivals, GDCA rumblings etc.

My whispers are that Rob McIntyre (GDCA Secretary) is making big moves towards revamping the comp and including methods to help the GDCA change things such as changes in the voting rights, board of directors, changing grading etc. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Have been monitoring site for a while and I thank the regular contributors for getting things going again.

GDCA wont change anything unless the teams vote on it, thats why nothing ever happens... Every club is looking out for their own interests and not to the bigger picture. I think Rob is trying to get a more powerful GDCA committee together that doesn't require 75% of the clubs agreeing to the change.

Well time to get some odds up and running.

Tony Clarke reserve in Macedon looks like being dug up after footy season to lay a new sprinkler system. Not sure how long it'll be out of action, but with J.D Clifford reserve being considered too small for top grade cricket , it'll be interesting to see where Macedons top Grade plays prior to Christmas.

It wasn't too small back in the day when they used to play there. Clifford isn't that small, anyway. Haven't the GDCA executive been to England? Some of the tiniest grounds in the world!

Well well,

Before we know it another season will be upon us. Most club's guns will have decided where they are at next season? What is your club doing????

My mail is the following.... believe it or not.

Approx 1/2 of the Woodend XI are heading elsewhere after their demotion to the B grade ranks. Kyneton, Macedon and Tylden are rumoured to be the favoured clubs atm.

S Harmon from Gisborne is heading O/S- leaving the dragons hanging on the brink of demotion...Massive hole to fill, the club would have to recruit significantly to replace this one. Also, just quietly, perhaps a few more dragons are going to bolster the Macedon first XI.

K Barker - after years of being the faithful son down at Rupo, the man that wears his heart on his sleeve is heading elsewhere. Would be considered a significant lose for a club light on for bats that can penetrate the jungle.

Riddell – going to secure some significant batting, along with the return of Wadden will see the bombers return to Macs finals without a doubt

United- will have to fill some large holes to go back to back.

Romsey – making up numbers.

Marsh- once a force, now a number. Bye bye rocket??

Dont know anything bout Wallan??

Macedon- might benefit geographically being located between Woodend and Gisborne, two clubs falling apart??

And just quietly. Over the next 3 years watch Sunbury East come from no where to be a big player.

Tylden, don’t waste the GDCA’s time.

Hesket, feed that friendly roo for me.

Riddell, great value bet for the flag @ $18.00

Thoughts?
Who are the MAssive holes that United have to Fill???? It would be interesting to hear who they are?? What are Grey and Hughes doing???

No specific names, however, was told that it will leave a gapping hole in their line up that will bring them back to the pack.

For it to be a "gaping" hole - it can only be Grey or Hughsey going? Will be interesting - I seem to recall Hughsey retiring a couple of years ago - his change of heart made him a premiership captain/coach!!!
Also heard about Harmon going OS.....big issues there for the Dragons!
Who are the bats that Riddell have picked up?

Mmmmm... park cricketer.... think you hit the nail on the head, would have to be one of them leaving that will produce the gapping hole.... t
The suggestion is there isnt room for both Grey and Hughes at SUCC. and that one will go.

Gisborne will implode now. A shame given they are such a large, central club to the competition. Just goes to show how unhealthy it can be for a club to be so reliant on one player.

So the player voted "Least popular GDCA player 2007-2009-2010" is heading to Woodend to play B grade as captain coach... Good luck Rocket!!

Side market
Rocket peeving off more than 5 Woodend players by OCT 1 - $1.45
Rocket peving off less than 6 Woodend players by OCT 1 - $ 2.45

He has to get the job first. But with those short odds I dont like his chances. My vote would go to our inaugrual international thunder thighed ex mac captain, the yorkshire pud:p

Spoke to a couple of United boys on the weekend. At this stage both Grey and Hughes are on board for this season. So where this suggestion has come from, considering they have played together for the last 4 season, seems a bit ridiculous to me.

I also wouldn't be writing off Gisborne that quickly. Anyone involved in the under 16's for the last couple of seasons will know that they have some very good kids coming through and if they can hold onto a couple of them, they may just surprise a few sides.

Westcoast..
Absolutely correct. My mail has changed. Both Grey and Hughes will be at United to defend premiership glory. United will again prove to be a force!!!

Chinese - Do you have any mail on who the bats are that Riddell have supposedly picked up??
It would seem that most good young players at Gisborne are in a hurry to leave - either to get down town or follow DMac to Greenvale!!!!!

seems to be confirmed now too. Hopefully he will be bringing a winning culture to the club.

Interesting application for the woodend coaching position coming from behind the stumps at Bacchus:eek:
no I think it's a great idea to back the youth at woodend, their under 14's won a flag. Maybe in 7 years time woodend will make a final. Don't worry about the players they have, it's all about youth

He will take a great knowledge of the game, learnt from beneath the wing of the Bulls coach of the last 10+ years, which he may be able to pass on to the young up and comers at Woodend. He will also take a huge ego and no it all attitude that will rub the older blokes up the wrong way. Interesting appointment if true.

Well, you know what they say “Captain/Coach’s don’t grow on trees”. On a positive note Woodend are picking up a batsmen who outscored all but one of their bats last season with Rocket scoring 373 @ high 20’s. The next best batsmen is some ‘Else’ bloke scoring 265 @44. Clearly batted too low with 6 not outs, or was he chasing an average..... All of this according to Mycricket website.
On another note, what are people’s thoughts on the state of the competition? People often talk about the decline in the quality of cricketers playing the top grade, backing it up with stories of the quickest of quick bowler and the silkiest batsmen that use to grace the comp. Has the comp gone to the crap in the last 20 years???
I put it down to the following
- Mass exodus to clubs down town of guns in local area. Increased access, better roads, info via the net and more clubs pumping up young players to ‘come down’ only to have them play thirds.
- Footy taking precedent with cricketers either dropping out or devoting more time to a pre season.
- Playing on matting
- Inability to provide good $$$ to players and coaches.

Thoughts?

No doubt the lure of turf wickets is a huge factor in the young blokes heading "downtown". All of the decent rep cricket, including the junior state championships is obviously played on turf. Not all the good kids are necesarily heading to premier cricket though - i know there are a few talented Gisborne boys (u14 & u16) that are playing in the subbies in the arvo.

What happened in 2008, disappointing !!!

Question - Is Grey staying at United or heading to Romsey as is widely rumoured?
And - Is Rocket the confirmed Captain Coach of Woodend? If so I wonder if he will listen to "Chafins" version of Rocketman by Elton John that he posted on here during the Gisborne vs. Marsh Grand Final a couple of seasons back...................
And one for anyone from Rupo - Has Kev Barker really left?

Yes he is confirmed....alot of murmurings of unrest already. It must be said thought that he has not met with the players yet, but most are hoping he comes with an open mind, not a big head.
