Curious as to what everyone's opinion in here is on this. Should all the money owed to Brayshaw fall within Melbourne's salary cap, partially or none at all?

They signed a player with a long contract despite knowing his history, this wasn't out of the blue or one off incident.

I think there's a distinguishable difference between offering a player a contract with injury history knowing no will match it due to said history thus allowing you to keep the player, than a player that's injured in a one off or injured after a contract is signed.

If the AFL has effectively 'medically retired' him, and it was alluded on one of the Fox shows that this was the case, then I think it should be outside the cap.

I don't recall what happened with McCartin although his contract would have been of significantly less value and length.

If we signed Mitch Lewis for another 7 years and over the course of the season, he is concussed multiple times and retired by the AFL (which I think has a distinct possibility of occurring now that concussion and CTE are discussion points on a weekly basis - it doesn't have to be Mitch, it could be anyone, but I think this scenario could happen in the near future), we'd all want him to recover as best he could and be paid what he was owed and we'd all certainly want the club to be able to pay it outside the cap.

Thats my take Bugs1977

Tom Mitchell for the Pies “managed” one week into the season. Lol, what a joke!
Why that a joke ?

For all we know he may have a slight niggle.
If so, you manage it by resting him this week.

I think some posters just want to put shit on other clubs &/or players for the sake of it.

this is what the article said:
"Collingwood premiership hero Tom Mitchell has been sensationally “managed” out of the Magpies’ Friday night showdown against Sydney as coach Craig McRae stuck to his promise to select a young on-baller.
Mitchell was subbed out of the 32-point loss to the Giants early in the third quarter with just nine disposals to his name."

maybe they should just say he was dropped instead of managed?

Playing devils advocate .
Melbourne were aware of his previous concussions and still committed to a high value , long term contract .
This might be where there is grey area .

Gut feel is it will be partial and the AFL may even allow Melbourne to spread the 'hit' where they want over the term.

This may see the move towards US style contracts where you have garaunteed $$$$ in light of something happening , as against the potential total contract .
Clubs need to be pressured not to selfishly sign players on like Brayshaw and Mccartin when the player themselves won’t call it. Melbourne took that risk with his health and should pay the entire contract under the salary cap.

Different if a new issue arises during a contract for a player who has never had issues before but Brayshaw was a known risk that they took

*, poor Gibcus. Looks like an ACL.

Far too many ACL's already this season.

Blanck
Coleman
Docherty
Gibcus

So similar to impeys acl, where the opponent (I'm this case curnow) pushed him while in the air, causing the landing to be off

I'm a deadbeat for suggesting that on the main board though.

Blues fans are a different breed

If you're blaming Curnow for that, you deserve to be shouted down.

No, not blaming him for the injury, but let's not pretend the contributing factor wasn't the push.

As I said, happened to impey. And I can remember other players doing knees after being pushed when in mid air.

Not calling curnow a dog etc, it's an accidental injury

Subbed out of the game last week because he was having no impact, he was dropped.
