AFLW 2024 - Round 9 - Indigenous Round - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
32 is way too many, there's a stack of squads already who are decimated with injuries. Why is the bye needed, or considered desirable? 17 teams in the NRL, why can't everyone play everyone else, home and away, that's 32 games. Why this complication?
Bit surprising - was certainly a down year but was in a grand final 12 months ago. I'd have given him another year.Poor Kevin.
Another coach to be sacked by the ponies.
If a coach lifted my tigers from bottom to a GF they’d be put into the hall of fame not in the unemployment queueThis was odd.
There are 5 genuinely recognised ‘elite’ coaches in the NRL world (even one of them has his critics) and they’re all engaged aside from Tim Sheens and you would have to think the game has gone beyond him now. So it’s not like they could have a ready made replacement. You’ve made a grand final 12 months ago. Your 3 best players have all had significant time off injured and certainly one of them in particular hasn’t recaptured his best form when he has been on the field.
You did everything but win the comp and really there was nothing as a coach you could do to prevent what Nathan Cleary unleashed to turn that result on its head.
Surely that buys you the chance to right the wrongs of this year?
Yeh agreed. Surely given next year. If they don't make finals then yeah Kev probably goes. This was odd.

Had a laugh at Webcke being pissed off and not liking Maguire as a replacement because he coaches NSW.

Perhaps like other posters, I'd be interested to hear who these 'five elite coaches' are! Obviously Cleary and Bellamy, and...?
Personally, I think Matty Peet deserves inclusion: six trophies in 1080 days, five in less than a year. holder of the League Leader's Shield (Minor Premiership), Challenge Cup, GF winners last season (and still in it), and World Club champions. And I've just watched our Academy side defeat Saints 15-12 in their GF. English coaches in the NRL are rare, but I wouldn't be surprised if they came knocking a few years down the line. Whether MP would be interested, I don't know. But I think he has built a club ethos, on firm foundations, in much the same way as Cleary has done at Penrith.
As a Tiges man I was ready to go in guns ablaze about Teddy but you snuck it in at the endCleary
Bennett
Robinson
Bellamy
Sheens
All won 3 or more grand finals, perpetual finals coaches during the bulk of their career.
Sheens one would assume is permanently in the cabinet now.
I pay very little attention to the super league to be honest, that’s not to say it doesn’t have merit
People might turn their noses up at Robbo because he’s not especially likeable and the notion that he always has this amazing roster at his disposal.
That’s true to some degree but not to the level it’s continually pumped up to.
‘Oh Manu, Mitchell, Sualii, Tedesco, Keary, Walker, JWH, Crichton, Cordner, Tupou, Young, Friend, the Morris twins, Cronk, who couldn’t win with those players.’
Well yeah I’m biased as a roosters fan but it’s a bit more nuanced than that.
Manu wasn’t a star when he debuted with us. Tupou wasn’t a star when he debuted with us. Sualii wasn’t a star at 17 when he debuted with us. Mitchell wasn’t a star when he debuted with us. Cordner wasn’t. Friend wasn’t. Keary was unwanted by Souths. Walker has been with us since he was a teenager and was in reserve grade last year. JWH played a few games off the bench for Manly. The Morris boys were both in their 30s when they came to us - Josh 33 and Brett 32. Collins wasn’t a star when he debuted with us. Radley wasn’t a star when he debuted with us.
Cronk was obviously a modern great but even he was well past his best but was perfect for the ‘onfield coach’ role we needed.
Tedesco was probably the one player we got that was absolutely gift wrapped at his peak - just debuted for NSW and about to hit his stride.
But yeah for all the narrative about how he’s been almost handed these gun sides year after year, he’s actually developed most of our best teams himself - note I said most - and in the last four seasons in particular we’ve had a pretty bad run with key players getting hurt or rubbed out.
I think if he handled himself better publicly he would earn more respect
I actually think that'll be the end of the WCC. Don't think it's anywhere near as important to us as it is to the English.
