That doesn't strictly matter.

In this case, there are two relevant rules:

20.1.1 The ball becomes dead when

20.1.1.1 it is finally settled in the hands of the wicket-keeper or of the bowler.

...

20.1.2 The ball shall be considered to be dead when it is clear to the bowler’s end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play.

The first one, Carey sent the ball out straight away so it never "settled". Similarly, the second one - while the batter may have ceased to regard it as in play, the fielding side clearly had not. Even if Bairstow had tapped his bat inside the crease and then walked out, it wouldn't have mattered - it would have indicated he thought the ball was dead, but batters can't unilaterally decide that.
I guess I more meant, that once the batsman grounds his bat is when the umpire generally calls ‘over’ or it is deemed a dead ball.
Johnny Bairstow has no one to blame but himself, for his own stupidity.

Pretty much the identical incident.

Also here's Baz "I don't think we'll be having a beer with them" McCullum earnestly defending the spirit of cricket as a player:

Once again, just stupidity by the batter.
But I get your point with McCullum.

Some very sour grapes from both Stokes & McCullum. For Stokes to call it 'Australia's winning moment' is just rot. No one knows how the test match would've played out, very very good chance we still would've won. And for McCullum (and Broad for that matter) to all of a sudden take the moral high ground is laughable.

Funny how these players seem to decide where the 'spirit of the game' should be followed & when it shouldn't. Zac Crawley knicked one that no-one heard or appealed for. You always know when you've hit the ball. He wasn't walking. I remember twice in years gone by, Stuart Broad hitting the ball to slips and not being given out & we had no reviews left.

Edit: Probably some frustration that is aimed at the Aussies when it should be aimed internally. They've played some very silly cricket (mainly the batsmen), and could quite easily be 2 tests up themselves right now. They've certainly had the rub of the conditions in my opinion. Won the toss in both test matches too. To be 0-2 is a massive failure.

I do find it amazing that amongst all this kerfuffle, that the English don't seem to recall that some of their own players have admitted to ball-tampering using mints and sunscreen. Even more amazing is that I hadn't seen it raised in the media frenzy.

I think that's why they haven't gone harder at Smith and Warner and ball tampering as an example of our "cheating" though.

Boland has to have bowled his last ball in this ashes. He's too predictable and easy to manipulate length against, and is the worst with the bat in the squad to boot.
Warner really should go as well but I can't think of anyone else in the squad to replace him... I will have a go though >

Usman Khawaja
Cameron Green
Marnus Labuschagne
Steve Smith
Travis Head
Mitch Marsh
Alex Carey
Mitch Starc
Pat Cummins
Josh Hazlewood
Todd Murphy

Murphy looked promising in India but we will really miss Nathan Lyon.

Last night they needed to not bother with Boland and replace him with Harry Potter. By the time he came on the game was really done.

Equally you could argue that having Warner out there meant the run total didn’t give our bowlers much to work with.

Smith and Marnus' shots at the end of day 2 to get out cheaply to the worst bowler in either squad were probably the biggest issue. Australia had the worst of the conditions but didn't do what they did in the first two tests and grind out a decent score.

Is the Commonwealth Games now an anachronistic irrelevance?

The sporting world has reacted with shock and sadness to Victoria’s bombshell decision to scrap its hosting of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the move sparking grave fears for the event’s future.

‘Ludicrous’ backflip slammed by great, fears for ‘death of Games’ as world reacts to Vic bombshell
As an athletics fan, I do look forward to the Comm Games. It's hard to see decent-level competition in Australia.

I love the track events particularly from mid distance running up to the marathon, fell in love with the Steve Ovett, Seb Coe rivalry.

Robert De Castella in the Brisbane Commonwealth Games was a real highlight as well.

I remember watching that as a youngster.

I have a preference for the field events. Unfortunately, TV tends to focus on the track events. Lucky I like the track events too.

I only give the Olympics another 20-30 years for essentially the same reasons. It's sad in a way, but I guess with the way global travel has become so much more affordable for so many more people around the world in the last generation or so (notwithstanding the recent upticks in cost of living pressures etc), people can now travel on a whim rather than planning for these big events.

(Says he who has been saving $70 a week since the Russia World Cup in 2018 to go to the North American smorgasbord in 2026 😂)

TV coverage has also improved dramatically in that time. Well, the commentary has gone backwards, but now you can see whatever event you want to see basically, without being limited to only the big events by only having one channel.
Commentators aren't allowed to have fun or have personalities anymore. They're either shock jocks or boring.

Fubar.

PSG have accepted Al Hilal's AUS$491.35m offer for Kylian Mbappe. He's been offered a 12 month contract of AUS$1.14250 billion after which he's free to leave and sign for whichever club he wants.
It’s only $2200 per second.

You beat me to it briz, I was coming on to post that... staggering money, I know that is the way capitalism/the market works and good luck to Mbappe but there is something wrong with society when you can get that sort of coin for kicking a ball around.

I heard on the radio this morning that 12 month contract is more money than Lebron James has made in his entire NBA career.

Mbappe is only being offered that money because the Saudi's are currently throwing billions at athletes. We all know why they are doing that. Outside of these mega Saudi deals though, sports teams generally only offer players their market worth which is dictated by how much revenue that player in that team will help generate.
