Get Barry Hall

Big Bad Bustling Barry wants to play on and I say go get him Port. Won't have much trade value now, we have room in our salary cap and we're crying out for a big, strong, tough forward who will make our players walk a few inches taller, strike fear into opposition players still, and is a proven goal kicker. He can also hand down some advice to our current crop of potential future tall forwards (inclduing J Westhoff, Salter and hopefully D Stewart) and maybe to our on and off-field leadership group about the mental steel of the Swans.

I don't care that he's 32 years old or that he is prone to red mist moments. We have a compelling need here and now to rebuild the image of this football club, not always worry what's going to happen five years hence in the fabled future premiership window.

Hall wants to play on and finish football business
Michael Cowley, Sydney | August 28, 2009

AFTER weeks of speculation, Barry Hall has chosen football over boxing, declaring that he wants to revive his AFL career and is hopeful of being picked up by a club during October's trade period.

NO.

Red mist moments & mental steel are incompatible concepts IMO. One of the Sydney midfielders, even retired just coming in as an AC or 'consultant', would be far far more valuable to our playing, coaching and recruiting groups. Assuming we were prepared to listen of course.

Tredrea and Hall in the same front line ?

Also it would most likely cost us Salter, as Choco would look to select Hall at every opportunity and go for Westhoof as the third tall, with his brother as primary backup.

<How funny is it that my subconscious wrote "front line" not "forward line" above ?>

Not when I was referring to giving advice. Hall has been a member of Sydney's leadership group and been on the wrong end of its disciplinary action. He has quite a unique perspective. How's the old saying go, set a thief to catch a thief?

And I can see a forward (front:p) line of Hall, Tredrea, Westhoff and Salter working, if Salter and Westhoff's motors are up to scratch - and it's not as if all four need to be on the ground at any one time, unless there's a tactical advantage. All four may not even be fit at any one time. Squeezes out the holes for small forwards too.

Imagine Barry giving aggression advice to Jackson Trengove. ;)

I would like to get him, but Victorian clubs will offer him either or money, or the trump card, a return to Melbourne.

I think big bad barry is a perfect fit for our foward line or even down the back.

Adding Barry to our forward line provides us with depth. To keep him on the straight and narrow, the incentive would be to offer a bonus if he kicks 100 hundred goals.

My only concern is his age. We missed out on Cousins who would have put bums on seats and added memberships, perhaps Big Bad Barry could and the same.

My first reaction was to say "no way" as an undisciplined player prone to "brain snaps" is not what I want to see out our club but giving it a bit more thought I now believe that recruiting Hall is just what our club needs at the moment. Our next two seasons are down the toilet anyway under Choco so if we are not going to attract fans with success we may as well attract them with a bit of controversy and the promise of some on field fire works.

I am going to go for yes, He is going to draw people to our matches, If someone can get between his ears he probably has two or three years left. He has some mongrel and it is what we lack at the present time. I would love to see Matt Thomas run through someone and then someone has a bite back at him, only to have Barry Hall and Warren Tredrea grab the bloke and offer him a piss off!

Warren Tredrea is aging, So is Barry, But both of them were in the best 4 big forwards this year, Brown, Tredrea, Fev, Hall, having him around is going to help the young lads. He would be a great influence in the changerooms and around training. He is a leader, he is not a stupid man, just has the occasional brain farts.

Big, Strong, Agressive players, Tredrea, Brogan, Thomas, Surjan, Cassisi. Add Hall and if he could teach Trengove, Salter, Carlile, Lobbe, D.Stewart, Pettigrew, Banner, Redden, P.Stewart, aggression we would be well set.

Players would walk taller, Its natural, it happens at club level, Some protection and the weakest wingmen want to take a mark in the defensive 50.

A year of rotation of Westhoff would probably help him out. Could you imagine Trengove, Redden, D.Stewart and Hall as weights partners, These lads to be spurred on by such a moliath of a man, Max Bench Press comps every seccond day, Every other day Max Back Extention Comps followed by 4 rounds Sparring.

It has been said Gerigh was a massive influence to Saint Kilda and their youngsters, Why can Hall not be our Gerigh for 2-3 years?

We are re-building and getting a player like Hall will only hold us back. I'd much rather give game time to our upcoming forwards like salter and westhoff.

That was part of my initial reaction. Next season we will supposedly be in the fourth year of a five year rebuilding plan. That would mean that our new dominant forward should be quite evident by now.

Given that this year Tredrea has been our dominant forward, Westhoff has gone backwards and Choco has not wanted to play Salter I can't see the inclusion of Hall in our side as holding anyone back. He may even take Ebert's spot.

I am highly sympathetic to the sentiment of luring a high profile player to our club and when you think about it, if his contract was weighted in the right way then the benefits would far outweigh the negatives. It would definitely provide something positive regarding the outlook for the 2010 season.

But the one thing that really concerns me about our club - the playing group - is our perceived need to import some toughness (mental and physical) into our playing squad.
And it is just not the post-2007GF group - remember we did it with Pickett in 2003 and Hardwick in 2002. Why can't we just do this as a basic attribute of any AFL player we decide to recruit via the draft?

The psychological profilers are going to be busy over the coming months.

We have the small forwards (Gray and Motlop) to assist the likes of Hall, Salter, Tredrea and J. Westhoff.

Also, Bazza will give the players a bit of swagger on the field, similar to Brogan when he fires up.

Remember what Dimma Hardwick brought when he came to the club?

how would we fit him in...??

J wess tredders and salter??

I would hire him just to try and turn J wess into a man, and force him Barry Hall style to get a haircut...

No Lobbe?

Ahh Have him in instead of Chad...

Wow, there was no motlop either, We have got one of the best lists in the comp, why are we so poor. Give our list to a Collingwood, Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn, St.Kilda, we would be near impossible to beat. I have confidence in Choco, but he needs to wake up, he/we need better support staff around him and the Players have to want a game.

Farmer and Trengove are must's next year, Thomas I think has cemented his spot and showing his true worth. 2010 is the year no more mediocre performances are excepted. We lost Guerra, a prommising young man because of the lack of oppertunities he got, Who cares if we loose Boak, Salopek, Hartlett, If they are not in our best 22 and/or not playing decent football, get rid of them! I want players that stand for something...

Get in some of the 2001-2005 side around preseason, Aparently their photo's are up around HQ's, Get some of the old Port SANFL legends in to give a few speaches. Show some highlights, see Silverfingures or Spadge if you need to purchase some, from 1960-1996 PAFC around Pre Season time, Show some of Tredrea, Wilson, Picket, Hardwick, Salopek, Thomas, Big hits and hardness. Show some footage of what the PAFC stands for, its far easier to emmulate what you see your heros doing, rather than hearing about it from a friend of a friend who knows a guy!

Our crowds will rise by 5-10k per game and he'd actually fill a need, unlike Cuzburgers.

I'm on board but I change my opinions like a female arts student, so.

DC: "Ahh Barry, Meet The Cat, formerly The Sanke, Seems he has no feet so those boots didn't quite work, nor did the safe chained to him, nor did Driving with Byron Pickett in Christmas 2004"
BH: "Useless, Looks like my work really is cut out for me here!"

I say Yes. He is what our club needs for a short term lift. He would also be able to provide invaluable advice to the salts and the hoffs. Our club should have taken Cousins but in my view lacked the courage. Our club used to be about making tough decisions to move forward, unfortunately it seems that this is no longer so. It could not make a tough decision on our current coach and subsequently missed Hardwick, it failure to snare cousins has imo, cost us a top eight spot and increased revenues through bums on seats and increrased membership. Even blind freddy could see the advantages of getting cousins to the club. I will remember the lack of courage shown by our current board come the next election. It is time some courage was shown and we could do no worse by taking someone like Hall.

I agree to this 100%. I have been a strong advocate to pick up Cousins for all the reasons mentioned by kozlowski......

We missed the boat then, and we will miss this charter as well.

Having said that, I think he would make an instant forward line for the GCF pairing up with Tippet.

I'd rather throw whatever wads of cash we have at Brian Lake and move Troy Chaplin forward, in a Daniel Bradshaw like move.
