Gibbs - just class

Keep in mind that Gibbs also dislocated his finger during the intra club game a few weeks ago now, and that could still be giving him some headaches.

Those who have seen him play for Glenelg truly know how good he is. He's well balanced, great poise, and he can hit you lace out from 50m. The guy will be very very good, but we need to be patient.

I've enjoyed reading this thread, almost as much as last nights game. Here's my slant on Gibbs. I think it's helpful to compare him to Murph as he's the closest comparison I can really make.

Personally I almost welled up when Murphy stole the ball for the supergoal last night, his poise at the feet of the big men, his vision and his ability to take a hit and hit a player with a kick or handball was just poetry. It's amazing how far he's come in a year even though he started pretty well. It's almost like 'somebody turned the lights on'. I haven't seen a bloke play football like this fella for a long time. I know Chris Judd is a superstar, but I believe Murphy will win several Brownlows before he hangs up the boots (I just hope it's in navy blue). In competition that is trying to squeeze champion footballers out of athletes (e.g: Delidio, Franklin, and Walker to a degree), Murphy is a rare footballer who has the athleticism and strength to cut it in the modern game. Unlike others who rely primarily on their athleticism and may enjoy freakish periods in their careers (e.g. Kouta), legends like Williams, Platten and Nathan Buckley are true footballers who enjoyed long and successful careers. Murphy will join them.

I haven't seen much of Gibbs in the navy blue so far but one thing is for certain, he is going to be an A grade midfielder. It's only been 2 NAB cup games but he's shown the selflessness, poise, footy smarts and courage (his tackling was outstanding last night) to convince me that there is no other person I'd want near Murphy in the middle to lead our team to premiership glory. He is another footballer. I haven't seen enough yet but I get the impression he has the skills, strength and endurance to combine in an elite midfield that will wear down their competitors. With guys like Russell, Simpson, and even Walker working through the midfield over the next 5-10 years, we can finally sense some genuine confidence that our core midfield group is in good hands.

The "Gibbs phenomenon" is a product of the media frenzy. Leave him alone just let the kid play, and let's make comparisons in 5 years time. Who knows what the future holds. I'm just glad we have talent in the number 4 jumper at Carlton. Go bluebaggers!

Agree. Did you see that moment when Gibbs was urging a spent Murph on as headed for the interchange bench when the game was in the balance in the last quarter? 30 seconds after Gibbs came on he effected a perfect turnover tackle on Mitchell. These moments say it all. :)

not bad for a bloke who apparently didn't want to come to carlton:rolleyes:
according to the adelaide supporters, he'll be back in adelaide in 2yrs right, spare me:rolleyes:

Hasnt done much so far but you can see he oooooozes class...

Will take a season to get up to speed but once he gets some weight and another pre season in him he will be a real plus for the CFC!

Exciting times ahead...

TV. It was just an important moment. :)

Very important passage of play during the game.
To be honest mate, I really thought you have been pumping up our list a bit too much over the past 12 months, but when you really think about it, you might have just been on the money.

I can really see this side fighting for a finals spot in 2008, and who knows beyond that.

I love this club, and always will. I want us to succeed, and I want a 17th premiership. And WHEN this day comes, as I am sure it will, it will damn near make Collingwoods 1990 Premiership celebrations look like a kindergarten tea party!

In all honesty Gibbs hasn't done a lot so far, but that's ok. Good for him to get a bit of experience before the season starts.

Seems to have pretty good skills and makes his tackles stick. Be interested to see how he progresses during the season.

whilst he hasnt done alot,he hasnt made a mistake either.Says a lot about what,a 17 year old?

Perhaps not with kis skills, but if you want to be picky, you could say he was a bit unaccountable against Essendon last week. Either way you slice it, Gibbs will be a very very good player.

I actually think it is an invalid argument to say he hasn't done a lot. As we continually point out in this thread, he has limitd game time, is being eased into it, and has been carrying a sore thumb :thumbsu: , er i mean

We both know what he can do Gilly, and to be honest, i'm not worried one iota. Pagan doesn't him in where all of the action is so early in the year, so i'd say he'll rotate him accross HF, HB and with stints in the midfield.

Relax everyone, we have got a great kid on our list.

Hope everyone enjoyed Gibbs amazing evasive skills in the first quarter, that almost resulted in a goal. This guy has some serious ability. He's obviously being gradually eased into the play. :)

Actually, chuck it and use photobucket. Much better (faster) site. :)

As I have said in another thread, some more of his skills were on display tonight. Clearly heading in the right direction.

A couple clangers tonight, shows he suffering nerves, especially that shot on goal he had from fifty. His approach was very staggered and didn't look at all confident. Exactly what you'd expect from a 17 year old, just needs time to settle. However, also displayed some great skill, that evasive play in the first quarter was all class and had he nailed that goal it would have been a beauty. Cannot wait for him to really get into it.

And that is why I qualified what I said by pointing out that we know these are only wins in the pre-season. I don't think Carlton supporters are getting carried away or being unrealistic. The majority of posters on our board know a huge task lays ahead to return us to premiership glory & you are right it is not going to be Bryce Gibbs who starts the ball rolling, it is going to be players like Jarrad Waite, Bret Thornton, Ryan Houlihan, Nick Stevens, Kade Simpson who are going to have to go to another level to start our climb up the ladder. Then in 2-3 years time the class of Murphy, Gibbs, Kennedy, Walker, among other of our current younger players, will be take us to the level we need to reach to compete for finals glory.
thornton and sentata still haven't come to grips with the hands in the back rule

thornton and sentata still haven't come to grips with the hands in the back rule

Neither has the rest of the afl and the umpires by the look of it. How was poor santy last night in the third against Thommo, closed forearm in his back to keep touch on him, Thommo fains a push, there was clearly no push and no open hand and umpire pays free against him, the irishmen was shattered. The umpire was fooled not through any fault of his own but because i believe they do not understand the interpretation or are conscieus of paying the free b/c of the rule change. It's a shocking rule as was seen last night, it's to easy to get a free kick now, if somebody touches you in the back open hand or closed forearm and you dive to your front or make out that you've been pushed, under the new interpreation you will be given the free kick. Rubbish. turn alot of supporters particularly older generation off the game if free kick like that get payed consistantly. I lost the plot when that got given.

Very good sign of things to come- that pick up, little side step, run on and unfortunately missed but, will get better as time goes on.

This time next year should be very interesting :)
