Ive noticed that Gibbs has pretty much always played back this year on key opponents.

In the long term, is he going to be a midfielder or a running half back player like Gilbee?

This kid is a gun

I would like to see him played forward for an entire quarter here and there. I think its important to make him accountable, but we also dont want him to become goal-shy from being down back for so long.

In the future, we definately want him to be a goal kicking midfielder. Probably kicking as many goals a season as Judd (but probably not racking up quite as many disposals as i think Murph will always be our bigget ball-winner)

midfield, hes better than that. watching the crows a lot i hate how they use mcleod. midfield is the place for the skill he has. imagine fev....

I think he should be mid-field, he'll grow faster if hes around the ball more

Needs another summer or two in the gym before he spends any real time in the midflield. Be nice to see him spend some time around HF though.;)

He is not just learning a defensive side to his game down back he is almost shutting down players for the team. At the moment leave him down there while we need it, and when there is not quite the match up on to the wing and hff he will go.

Great addition to the CFC.

Awesome footballer. Stats-watchers get upset because he doesn't accumulate a massive number of pointless "Hodge-back-pocket-receives". But everything he does is pure quality. Reads the play better than most, superb at the one percenters, ultimate team player, amazing evasive skills in heavy traffic, and sets up goals when he moves up through the midfield. We are almost taking his consistency for granted. A unbelievable talent and a once every 20 year type #1 draft pick. So glad he's wearing the navy blue. :)

Gibbs is a great player down back, and like a couple have already said you need him down there. He kept Ebert to like 3 touches and no goals! Killed him.

I think that he might just be a player though that when Carlton are under pressure he NEEDS to be in the centre of the ground or forward. Kids a great overhead mark and an accurate kick! (well that's what I saw of him at Glenelg)

Glenelg is a bit different to the AFL he needs time to develope.

What a great job both the coaches and he are doing. He is too light to spend too much time in the middle. I commend the club on looking after him. He would not get through a full season in the middle his body isn't ready for the hard running and hard knocks. He will finish the year with a heap of games come out of next years pre season a man not a boy and play where ever he wants. I love his decision making, never chooses the wrong option all class. Couldn't be happier

Our Midfielders are getting smashed around by other players, keep him back imagine what beating opponents like Aker and Ebert are doing for his confidence

He will play in the middle when his got more meat on him

By the end of the year, i'd expect him to be having stints through the midfield. He's just too good a player to leave him in the backline all year, and he should get a taste of what it's like to play in the engine room at AFL level.

I wouldn't hold my breath in anticipation HBF.

I think Pago is developing Gibbs in a very similar manner to Walks-teaching him the defensive side to the game.

I doubt we will see very much at all of Gibbs in the middle this year.

I do like the way Pagan is developing Gibbs, but I also like to see him get a go in the midfield later in the year. Even give him a go towards the end of the second quarter when the tempo is down a bit, and he can come in with some fresh legs.

The problem is that Gibbs just doesn't have the strength or body type to be able to play and compete in the middle against bigger bodies players.

If we play him in the middle not only are we increasing the risk of him suffering an injury, but we're also increasing the possibility of his confidence being destroyed.

If we keep him in the middle he can do better than just compete, as we have seen so far this season. His confidence will be on the up by the game.

There is no need to change this and throw him into the middle.

I would think that Murphy was lighter and smaller (no doubt about that) when he started in the midfield. I'm not saying that Gibbs needs to be in there for extended periods of time, but I think it would be good for his development to get him in there at some stage later in the year.

I think people think that because he's taller (not to mention having a bigger head... probably due to his hair) he's actually physically bigger or stronger than Marc was when he first came to the club. Well if you go back, look at those rather disturbing draft camp pictures of Marc and compare them to the same ones of Gibbs you'll realise that Marc was always pretty muscular (not ready made but still...) while Gibbs is still a skinny kid who needs two or three preseasons in the gym.

Murphy was lighter than he is now when he first started, but he was still a MUCH bigger body when he started than Gibbs is now.

You also need to keep in mind that Gibbs had been playing seniors in the SANFL for quite some time prior to him getting drafted. Sure, the standard isn't nearly as good as AFL, but he has been playing against men for a while now.

I think he can take it in the midfield, but only in brief stints, and towards the end of the quarter when the tempo has gone down a notch or two.

I happy with Gibbs playing down back as he's just doing a great job on whoever he's oposed to, all class.

He's getting a little bit of time in the midfield when his opponent has gone in there looking for kicks due to the fact that he has completley been shut out of the game, this gives him time to experience the midfield in short spurts.

gibbs is one of our better defenders-
which shows that we lack depth in this area
and it shows how good a footballer he actually is.

no issues with gibbs learning a defensive role so he becomes a complete footballer.

football has changed and there are very few players who can be 1 position players, you need to be versatile.

if you look at the melbourne storm, one of their keys to success is that all their runing players (backs) can play a variety of positions, even some of their FWDs can play in running roles.

as the year goes on I think we will see gibbs push into the midfield a lot more.
