That wasnt a king hit.

If there was no send off in country footy it would happen for sure. Imagine what would happen if someone walked up behind say bergles for example in a GF and broke his jaw and the bloke stayed on the field. Things would get very ugly.

That thug Dean Wallis broke Brad Green's jaw before the opening bounce in 2000. Absolute dog. I would not even spit on him.

Cost the demons the premiership. Only got 6 weeks from memory because he said he was retiring. What do you know he ends up making a return the next season. Dog.

Oh and Michael Long knocks Troy Simmonds out when he has his head over the ball.

I thought that was during the first quarter, and didnt break his jaw did it. Smashed his throat so he couldnt breath.

Dont think it would have made much diff to the end result GS.

Definitely broke his jaw, may have been early in the first quarter, it was 9 years ago.

Obviously would not have changed the result but Dean Wallis will forever be remembered as a cheat.

i doubt melb would have beaten essendon that year with greeen and simmonds on the field. bombers were too dominant that year.

Was on Austar last night Wallis had a scuffle and punched Green in the head, breaking his jaw.

Time to get a bit proactive - all clubs should be talking to their under 18's that might not be playing on and encouraging them to take up the whistle for next year). For a lot of guys that want to stay involved in footy and earn some bucks - we need to sell the umpiring to the young blokes (there are some umpies that have umpired 50 games this year when you add in junior games) this equates to over $3k in their kick tax free. When you mention the bucks the young blokes will listen. could pay for a schoolies week or a trip to Bali.

Each Umpire association should encourage a "come and umpire for a day" kind of promotion where blokes that might be a bit shy about getting laughed at by their mates can come and umpire a game and see if they like it (much like Jason Chapple (Pearcedale coach) did at Bonbeach a few weeks ago). Or have a training night along similar lines.

All you blokes that complain about umpies - here's your big chance to do something to improve the standard. get in the ear of these blokes at YOUR club.

I am sick of your ill informed comments about umpires' ego etc etc. If any of you got off your fat asses and umpired a game you would see that most umpires umpire instinctively. The idea that an umpire has a preconceived idea of which team he will pay a free kick to is laughable.

Not in my eyes.

For me, he will always be remembered as the Essendon player who helped another Essendon player (Darren Bewick) drink a slab during the seniors at Darnum in Round 4, 1995 Vs Dusties. The most memorable part of this occasion was the fact he left with a female and returned with her silky underpants on his head like a tiara.

I like the way I remember him, not yours.

Okay time to make some nominations for worst umpiring decision of 2009. We all know the list could be as long as the chinese phone book so try to limit it to the very best.

My nominations
1. Poowong v Lang Lang - A wet day. The officiating umpire awarded a free kick to the Poowong player (all okay). Lang Lang player returned the ball in a satisfactory manner touching both hands of the Poowong player but slipping through because of the slippery conditions. Non officiating umpire 50m off the ball awards a 50m for not returning ball correctly. Poowong player who also doubles as this umpires son goals from 30m.

2. Lang Lang v Nilma Darmum - Nilma kick-in. Player kicks it to himself, runs out of square and then kicks long to a contest. Umpire decides this warrants a ball-up at the top of the square. After being told he kicked it to himself the umpire rightly changes his decision but instead of just letting Nilma re-take the kick-in he decides to ball it up where the players second kick landed. wtf?

3. Lang Lang v Bunyip - Goal was scored and players were returning to the middle for ball-up. Bunyip ruckman is in circle but Lang Lang ruckman still making his way. When he gets there he is told by the umpire who himself is not yet in position that it is a free kick against him as the umpire had already locked the circle.

4. Neerim South v Lang Lang - Similar to 3 but worse. Neerim having confusion about who is meant to be in centre square end up only having 3 in there. A couple of seconds prior to the umpire throwing the ball up they finally get a fourth guy in there. Only for the umpire to pay a free kick to Lang Lang because he had already locked the square. It then happened again the next ball up. (This is not even a rule).

Fail.

Would you guys like me to grab the 100 worst acts of play I have seen? Or the worst 100 set shots at goal I've seen this year? Or simply 100 acts of stupidity with the football?

laws of the game said:
11.3.4 Permitted Numbers at the Centre Bounce
When the football is bounced to start a quarter or recommence play
after a Goal has been scored, the following shall apply:
(a) a maximum of 4 Players from each Team are permitted in the
Centre Square;
(b) no Player (other than the 4 initial Players) or Team Official
shall enter the Centre Square from the time the field Umpire
commences his or her approach to the Centre Circle to bounce
the football until the football touches the ground, in the act of
bouncing, or leaves the field Umpire’s hand, in the act of being
thrown up;

(c) where a Player or Team Official contravenes Law 11.3.4 (b),
the field Umpire shall signal time on and award a Free Kick to
the Player of the opposing Team who is nearest to the Centre
Circle. The Free Kick to be taken in the centre of the
Playing Surface behind the line through the Centre Circle;

Gee it is great when the umpires don't even know the laws of the game. Nowhere in the rules does it mention that the umpire can lock the square when he sees fit. The only time a free kick can be awarded is when a player enters between the time the umpire starts his approach and the time it leaves his hand. This would be a free kick for the boundary umpires to award, not the central umpire.

And even if a player were to enter the square between the time he started his approach and the ball left his hand (which it wasn't), he can claim that he was part of the initial 4. It does not say that the initial 4 have to be inside the square.

So in conclusion I don't fail, you fail.

That rule could be read either way i reckon.

Also doesnt say the ruckman has to take the kick but umpires always say thats the rule. Does it mean any on baller should take the kick or the player closer to the infringment?

Please Re-read the rule. And take note of the word "initial", perhaps even look it up in a dictionary?

This is usually the process:
- The umpire receives the ball from the boundary umpire
- The field umpire then waits for the boundary umpire to position himself on the corner of the square.
- He then makes his Approach to ball up (This must mean what it said to be "locking out"
- During this time, A ruckman cannot enter the centre circle and no other player (regardless if there is 1 or 4) players in the centre square.
- The boundary umpire (or other field umpire) will call the freekick.
- The ruckman for the non-offending team will always take the freekick.

If both teams have breached this rule in the same act of play, no action will be taken.

Ruckman will take the freekick because its assumed that he was in the centre circle at the time of the infringement.
