Gladiator is my number 1 film, not sure I want this.

Love Denzel, the ship battle in a flooded colosseum, the Nero like emperor.

Dislike the Rhino fight which I was glad got cut from the original films script, the rap song doesn't fit, Hans Zimmers score is goated. Don't like Lucious as a gladiator, seems an unlikely path from the original.

Will wait and see but I think the first was lightning in a bottle and it won't be captured again.

Is this a totally different story to the first?

It's a sequel set a couple of decades after the original events of Gladiator. The main character is Lucius, who was a boy in the first movie, and could be the son of Maximus. The story sounds fairly similar. Lucius is forced into slavery then becomes a gladiator.

The grandson and nephew of two former Emperors becomes a slave? Not a good start

Commodus kills his father, Marcus Aurelius, and declares himself emperor. Later, Maximus kills Commodus. Commodus doesn't have children and Rome didn't have a clear succession system so the heir would be disputed. History shows children in that position are at risk of being killed or imprisoned. Lucilla might flee with her son to protect him then they both lose any status.

I'm with Ridley so far on this one.

Ridley Scott picked some fights with historians over Napoleon and, excitingly, it appears he's primed to do it again!

Some of these are nitpicking, but this

Another Gladiator II scene shows a Roman noble sipping tea in a cafe while reading the newspaper – which, as The Hollywood Reporter noted, would be an anachronism as the printing press would not be invented until 1,200 years later.

is awesome.

It's watchable but not a patch on the original. It relies on material from the first movie to try to elevate it.

The plot is generally ok, if predictable. Paul Mescal lacks Russell's charisma, and his succession to being a great leader of men feels a little unearned. That is exacerbated by Denzel having such screen presence that he overshadows him in what should be a relatively minor role. It's like after 1 hour 40 Denzel becomes the main character. Pedro Pascal's Marcus Acacius stands out as the most believable character - similar to Maximus.

The hand to hand fight scenes are mostly very good. But there's some odd choices that take you out of it. CGI baboon dogs, a trained rhino, sharks in a flooded arena.

6/10

Would agree with 6/10, not anywhere near the 2000 film, but it’s okay, but watching it you can’t help but compare it to the original and that’s where it falls flat.

Pascal & Denzel are good, Mescal does an honourable job but falls completely short in comparison to Crowe’s Maximus character, and the two emperor brothers were both annoying and very poor characters.

Jesus ****ing christ I broke my off-season hiatus just to add BigFooty to the list of places I need to inform people that this is close to the worst movie ever.

****ing zombie baboon hounds and goddamn sharks in a colisseum filled with water hosting a fight between two full size ****ing ships. It's not deep enough, the ships cant manoeuvre like that and sorry, did I mention they want us to believe the coliseum can ****ing flood like that?

They made the ****ing story a wannabe rip off of the original and then tried to revolutionise the gladiatorial experience.

Next time do the opposite you ****ing tools.

Oh, and marching 11000 soldiers to say hi to each other after a fight between two people neither side has any reason to support? Get in the ****in bin. CGI budget get eaten by the ****ing rhino earlier did it?

But don't worry, Denzel and Pedro were decent in their roles so cha-****ing-ching.

The coliseum did flood.

Agreed movie was shit.

Ridley Scott is so washed honestly, what was the last thing he did which was even remotely seen as good? Probably the Martian

What a steaming pile of crap
