Glenn Archer - Overrated?

Overrated.........most definetly.
Legend of the NMFC. No doubting that but his output over many years has not reached the level that the plaudits have.
If Glenn Archer is a true champion of the game then that would make Gavin Brown a legend.
Equally as courageous as Archer.

One of the best wingmen of his time.
Played CHF in a premiership team and more than held his own in the postion.
And was more than a competent defender in his later years.

This has all to do with Archer the footballer as opossed to the man.
As a person and an ambassador of the game, there have been few men as impressive as him.
Wish him all the best this week and whatever he does after retirement.
*******.com ;))

Mate, im a big fan of Gav but to think he was more courageous then Arch is over doing it a tad... This man reeks of courage

Archer is an over-glorified back pocket who struggles playing modern day footy and only made 300 games because he has had a good run with injuries and of recent times has played in a struggling side
Broken hand, torn hammy's, concussion, shoulders...yeah not too many injuries...

Team of the 90's with players like Carey, Stevens, Rock, Longmuire...yeah struggling side aswell.

Contender for worst post ever. EVER.

I said equally....not more.
Gavin Brown was equally as courageous as Glenn Archer. Fact.
Never saw him shirk an issue and was continually throwing himself into places he had no right being in.
Rating Gavin Brown alongside Archer in regards to courage is not to the detriment of Archer but the view, especially from Kangaroo supporters, that no other player compares to him absolutely shits me.
The fact is that many players over the long history of our game can be mentioned alongside Archer in regards to courage. Many players.
Archer is definetly at the top of the tree but he 'aint enjoying the view all alone.

Before Collingwood ruined his career he was a champion.

But did you ever watch North v Collingwood games in the mid 90's. Who did Archer and Brown play on most of the time? A: each other. Who won most times A: let's just say the blond haired one still reigns supreme.

Top post. Agree 100%.

If you dont consider N. Buckley better than Archer then you're seriously deluded and too biased to participate in this discussion.
Agreed and I'm sure he knows that.

As far as skills and actually being a good player go, he is correct. And you can chuck in a few other players too. But Archer is very corageous, one of the most corageous ive seen, along with Gavin Brown. Archer is a champion of the game, but as far as great players go, he doesnt rate highly.

interesting facts:

-he has never won a north best and fairest

-polled only 37 brownlow votes in his entire career

-never has he considered to be in the top 10 players in the league at anytime
during 300 game career

I'm surprised about the best and fairest part, but he's not a flashy player and that's all the umpires look for when giving votes- defenders never poll well, he's probably done well to get to 37.

hes a champion by a long way.

However hes not in the same league as these four blokes;

Hird, Buckley, Voss, Harvey.

Don't get me wrong Glen Archer is a fantastic player. Courages, commited and hard at it which we all can admire. But to me, i can't put him even close to the same catagory as Hird,Buckley, harvey. Some of you may be thinking otherwise but to me he has just been a good servant to the game and not a 'champion'. Allthough it may be hard to compare him to the great midifielders like hird buckley and harvs since archer is a defender, imo i just dont see what makes him such a legend of the game regardless of his position.
Couldn't agree more.
Sure, Archer has been a great player of the game, however, for mine, I find it hard to even consider him as good as Buckley, Hird, Harvey, Voss, ETC.
I Could not believe when Robert Walls rated Archer a better player then those 4 mentioned above earlier this year. Seriously, think about it. Out of those 5, who would you most like to have at your club? For mine, the order goes Buckley, Harvey, Voss, Hird, Archer.

Archer has been a fantastic servant to the Kangeroos, but in my opinion, falls short of "champion" status.
