Good Friday

Whether your Christian or not, Good Friday, no AFL, Children's Hospital Appeal is a long Melbourne tradition, it's good to see some things are respected, and let's face it it means Thurs Sat, Sunday, Monday football

I've noticed that the Melbourne Storm, in the interests of relating to the local community, have decided to ignore that. So I guess everyone will reciprocate and ignore them

It takes 10 sec to donate to the Children's Hospital, I don't need to watch 10 hours of self-promoting Z-grade celebrities to make me want to chip in a few bucks.

Interestingly, or un-interestingly, both the NHL and Major League Baseball have games on good Friday.

For starters we are a secular state - so why we pander to any religion amazes me. We don't move the GF to Sunday to appease the Jews do we?

The reason often bandied around is so that families can come together on that day. Whilst i appreicate the Friday is the more important religious date -the reality is more australians come together on the Sunday - then the Friday.

So if you are going to have a day off - have the Sunday off.

Exactly, Good Friday means absolutely nothing to a fair few of us.

But why are you happy with it? Because its 'one day off', or because you are Christian and it suits your personal beliefs?

I'm a catholic and I have pretty strong beliefs in that regard. But it wouldn't worry me at all if there was an AFL game on that day. In fact, I'd be fully behind it and would most certainly watch every minute. I'm simply saying I don't mind and don't see the big fuss about having one day off. It has been an AFL tradition for a long time and that desicion is respected by a lot of people, not only religious types, but families and organisers and supporters of the Appeal. But for the record, if the AFL did fixture a match on Good Friday(which they won't under Demetriou) I would support it and if the Saints happened to be playing theres no doubt I would go.

Seems North are still keen on trying to push for Good Friday footy.

NORTH MELBOURNE coach Brad Scott is hoping the AFL will take notice of a special Good Friday training session he is holding at Arden Street as the club re-ignites its campaign to play a match on the holiday.“North were really the innovators there in terms of wanting to play a game on Good Friday,” Scott said from Arden St on Thursday morning.

“We absolutely maintain that we’d love to play a game on Friday night on Good Friday. Some other clubs have expressed an interest as well but we certainly were the initiators of that [idea], so we’d love to play that game.”

I wouldn't be opposed to a North Melbourne fixture on Good Friday, maybe against the Dogs or StKilda would be my 2 choices.

I disagree in the sense that b/c my family don't live in Melbourne, the Easter Friday is usually one of only 2 or 3 times a year I get to see them, and so about the only time I'd choose something over going to the football.

But hey, if the AFL think there'd be a big enough crowd for a match still then I don't see why not.

I also don't have any problem with it from the other standpoint, it's possible to go both to church and the footy on good friday, so there's no real issue there.

The only real issue, would be taking away from the RCH appeal, but I'm sure it could be worked in with that somehow.

I'm pretty sure Jesus died on the cross so that we could have some futbol on god damn good friday.

Seriously, would it kill you to ****ing open the shops as well.

There is never anything to do.

I dont really care if they end up putting a game on good friday or not and I think it will eventually happen - maybe after Demetriou goes - but really what is the difference, we had tonights game last night. Would people have had nothing to do but twiddle their thumbs last night if it wasn't for the Brisbane Carlton game. Based on very rough maths there are over 250 days a year with no AFL. What do people do!!! It's not like we have a round of 7 games because of no footy on Good Friday. Also obviously many people get a day off for this day, and who doesn;t enjoy a day off, so no footy ain't too much of a bad thing.

No. Keep it footy free.
  • It means we get an AFL game a day earlier
  • The day remains for family, mates and other pursuits
  • We don't need 4 days of footy in a week
  • Some things are more important than football (sorry to shock)

No ones talking about ditching that game.

My family and mates like going to the footy.
  • We don't need 4 days of footy in a week
As opposed to 8 months of footy in a year?

Certainly not some dead political activist from a curious Jewish sect.

IMO, anyway.

Could probably get a fair bit of coin for the good friday appeal. The 'distraction' away from the good friday appeal telecast would be balanced/outweighed by having tin shakers at the entrances/walking around during the breaks. 50,000+ fans donate a $2 coin each, would make the AFL look like good guys and keep the fans happy too :thumbsu:

Whether we 'want' the holiday or not is not the issue.

I don't see any issue with the normal Friday night game, but if there is a day game, during a holiday, it becomes an issue how the AFL may treat the religious aspects of the day...

If this is correct, then there are a heap of people on here who think we'll be getting an extra day of footy, when in fact all we'll be doing is swapping days.

Amazing there are some fair perennial slaggers of North in this thread and yet a fair bit of love for one of our initiatives. Not the first time we got the ball rolling re a few things in that sense either. We think it mazing!
