A tweet by respected Melbourne Football Journalist Paul Amy; A couple of emails kicking around today suggesting one of the Vic football metro leagues is targeting a July 4 or 11 kick-off for its season. Same dates were thrown up by a coach yesterday. Quite a few hurdles to jump but a few leagues seem committed to clearing them...

We are all talking in hypotheticals until
1, we have a start date.
2, can crowds come.
EVERY GV club president has voted.
No crowds NO season.
I don’t get what else there is to talk about until we can have a start date with crowds.
That’s not negative, that’s the facts.

The Bull steps in with the voice of reason

A delivery driver drives to 12 McDonald’s stores to do a delivery. He’s now spread the Covid-19 virus to 12 different stores. Has minimal contact with them in this process.

We are kidding ourselves if we think it’s safe to play football in the current environment.

I’d say it’s reckless at the very least. The control and elimination of this virus far outweighs all of our desires to play. Plenty of other exercise options to pursue to help with the mental health side of things.

The quicker they knock, in our case Country footy on the head, the quicker people can deal with it.

Not rocket science.

He didn’t spread the virus to 12 stores. Just read a release from McDonald’s that they shut down 12 stores where the driver did deliveries and none of them had staff that were infected. Staff were infected at Fawkner and Craigieburn but the driver did not deliver to either of these stores. I appreciate we can all have an opinion, but I’m in Roar’s camp and am hopeful for an abbreviated season of some form.

Fair point I may have got that wrong but it still closed 12 stores. Imagine that was a football club. That’s the point.

Understand ( didn’t hear myself ) that O&M president was on ABC radio this morning and confirmed they are open to start as late as August .

There are plenty of positive signs in Australia at the moment with our fight against the virus and life is slowly returning to normal. We will know more when Andrews make his statement at the end of the month about Victoria.I would say at this stage the prospect of being allowed to play local/country football is looking better but if the leagues go ahead how many clubs/players will commit to playing half a season of football as late as August.Always have said if Aug start lets get our juniors out there for 2 months but how many of them will commit so late in the season. I am sure the leagues want to wait as long as possible as some of their jobs are on the line short term as well.

Jobkeeper would eradicate the making decision based on jobs theory . Whilst most league presidents I know don’t get paid .

Interesting to see the Hume league has decided not to award a flag this season. Is it the start of something (in today's Border Mail)
Waste of time playing really. Good socially I suppose but can’t see clubs holding onto their players if neighboring leagues do go ahead and play for keeps .

I often ask myself why does someone have that opinion. Now if gatherings only get too 100 for the next few months I'm all for Juniors going ahead. But in Andy Grant's case at Mitiamo they don't have juniors but they do have fly in players & a number of players on big deals you'd suggest to play at a Club in the middle of nowhere which would create a headache for him to renegotiate. I'd suspect those things plus a couple of other lists looking stronger than his might have flavoured his opinion.

Maybe...he also has kids of his own though

Big accusation there fly, why can't you take it on face value, the grants are a great footy family, if it juniors only, it's a hub environment where everyones local,

You would think the hume league thinks most leagues won't play and their happy for an almost preseason comp where you would think it's locals only playing. Maybe the tide is turning where players will show loyalty to their clubs during this hard time, poor effort to jump ship this year isn't it? Clubs on there knees but I'll go and play for another side.

After all, all I hear on this thread is that's the main reason for starting up local footy this year, nothing to do with getting paid to play or to win but community, maybe more leagues will follow interesting times

I thought the same when you pointed out a high profile Country Coach was saying call the Season off & it was Mark Alvey up at Tooleybuc who have a string of fly in's as well. Too hard basket. Are you lobbying for Ross Faulkner Football's to be used next year Trent? Surely Club's won't be able to afford T.W Sherrins ever again? :)

Not sure we need to be bagging coaches or making assumptions on their opinions. They are the ones putting more work into footy clubs than anyone and are heavily invested in their players. They will also be the ones asked to do more than anyone if we do get started.

I would have thought there opinions should be sought, valued and respected

Sorry in advance for the lack of detail and transparency but I was talking to a GV president today who said quiet emphatically that he had done a “ring around” and had a chat to some other club presidents and the general consensus unfortunately is that this year won’t go ahead. When I asked a percentage chance he said 0%. Was that blunt with me. Just to put some context to the conversation I have known this bloke for over 30 years very well. He’s not a bullshitter.

Understand that may be a little shallow in detail and am expecting a jab in the guts from a few but just stating what he said....

He said a meeting was being held tonight....watch this space I guess.
