Pretty good ratings considering the GF game is always outside prime time viewing

AFL Grand Final 2024 TV Ratings reached 4.02 million, solidifying the match as the highest-rated Australian TV event of the year.​

The 2024 AFL Grand Final has emerged as the most-watched television event of the year, attracting a total of 4.02 million viewers nationwide. The match, which saw the Brisbane Lions dominate the Sydney Swans, drew large audiences across both traditional television and digital platforms.

Pre-match speculation suggested that the presence of two northern state teams could lead to record-breaking viewership numbers.

However, the Lions’ commanding performance, resulting in a one-sided affair, likely tempered the overall audience, particularly in the harbour city.

The outcome, largely determined by half-time, saw Sydney’s audience reach just 464,000, a significant drop from the 740,000 viewers who tuned in to watch the Swans win the 2012 Grand Final against Hawthorn.

While this year’s match did not break any records, it still stands as the second-highest-rated AFL Grand Final in the past six years. The 2024 result significantly outpaced last year’s Grand Final, where Collingwood overcame the Brisbane Lions with an audience of 3.75 million.

Melbourne led the 2024 metropolitan breakdown with 980,000 viewers tuning in via linear television, followed by Sydney with 464,000, Brisbane at 456,000, Perth with 344,000, and Adelaide drawing 300,000 viewers.

In addition to its strong linear broadcast numbers, the match was streamed for mobile devices on 7plus for only the second time, helping boost Seven’s digital audience. A total of 655,000 viewers accessed the match via streaming, significantly up from last year’s 441,000.

AFL Grand Final Ratings History​

The 2022 Grand Final which featured Geelong Cats thrashing the Sydney Swans delivering a ratings low of 2.96 million viewers nationally.

The 2021 AFL Grand Final between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs from Perth Stadium achieved a national average audience of 4.16 million.

The 2020 AFL Grand Final between Richmond and Geelong which was played in Brisbane due to COVID delivered Seven a national audience of 3.812 million people (2.979 mil 5 City Metro).

In 2019 an average national audience of 2.939 million tuned in to witness Richmond demolish the Giants by 89 points in their first Grand Final appearance.

The 2018 nail-biting finale between Collingwood and West Coast was watched by a national audience of 3.378 million (2.601mil 5-City Metro).

Richmond’s victory over the Adelaide Crows in the 2017 Grand Final delivered Seven an average national audience of 3.524 million (2.680 mil 5-City Metro).

The 2016 Grand Final between the Western Bulldogs and Sydney Swans also delivered a ratings spike, with an average national audience of 4.089 million (3.039mil 5-City Metro) including 534,000 viewers in Sydney.

In 2012, the Sydney Swans defeated Hawthorn. The match remains as the highest rating Grand Final in the past ten years with an average national audience of 4.415 million (3.196mil 5-City Metro). The audience for that day included 740,000 viewers in Sydney.

The AFL Grand Final has drawn the biggest audience in TV all year at a massive 4.02m viewers in National TV audience as Brisbane Lions doubled the score of Sydney Swans.
In Melbourne there were 980,000 on linear viewing followed by Sydney (464,000), Brisbane (456,000), Perth (344,000) and Adelaide (300,000).
For the first time Seven enjoyed the massive live streaming audience which was 655,000 on 7Plus.
The broadcast topped the 3.65m who watched the State of Origin III decider match in July.
But wrapping by 6pm the Grand Final does not factor into primetime share for Seven, save for the bumper lead-in it provided.
In previous years OzTAM ratings only measured linear broadcast in 5 city metro (although RegionalTAM did measure regional linear audiences) making comparisons to previous years more complex.

I did see him when they were showing the celebrations on the big screen at the G in a suit wiping away tears. He was in shot for too short a time to tell if they were tears of happiness for the team or of sadness that his time was finishing and he’d missed the boat to be part of this. Both is possible of course.

On my 5th rewatch.

Attended the game, celebrated appropriately and then a video session Sunday morning at Young & Jacksons with a few beers. Headed home to Perth with the family and a full rewatch again - still not getting tired of it.

Rough figures but I believe with 18 wins in total and only 8 of those wins at the Gabba for the year.. it means we hit a remarkable 10 away wins for the year plus a draw. After the weekend it also makes it 3 wins from our last four attempts at the MCG..

A couple of hoodoos gone by the wayside this September, MCG... winning 3 big away games in a row against sides above us on the ladder...

Also believe that this finals series has put to bed the notions that we were not fit enough or had enough run to win the big dance.

Note- I was a part of this view, I humbly apologise for doubting us.

I don't know... I'm still pretty sceptical of our MCG record; we've only won 4 out of our last 20 there.
