Average Grand Final ticket price is $350. Plus there are I'm guessing 5-10k "packages" where the AFL scalps tickets for $2000+ by throwing in free drinks and canapes under a marquee.

Will the Gabba even sell out at 40k capacity with an average ticket price of $350?

Optus Stadium would sell out within 30 minutes at 60k capacity, but I can't see the Gabba selling out. They'll have to giveaway a lot of tickets to Auskickers to fill the empty seats.

I think they'd struggle to sell out at an average of $350 even if Brisbane are in the GF.

I’m sure WA has done emphatically more for the AFL in the last 30 odd years than qld

WA saved all those tin rattler clubs once back in 1987, and they're going to save the VFL/AFL again in 2020 by being able to host the Grand Final while Victoria is shut down from a pandemic.

I can't see the Gabba selling out unless tickets are $100.

Heaven help the AFL if it's a Port Adelaide vs West Coast Grand Final might be 10k in attendance.

West Australian's and South Australians are still allowed to travel to QLD. May have a bit of bother when they get back though.

Hutchy last night on FC reckons the WA teams will soon be forced to hub in QLD and that will make only QLD and AO a viable venue.

The most sensible option. Lions might cop it a little from rival fans, but very deserving, and the FNQ stadiums as plan B insurance should tip the scales.

McGowan similarly being a Labor premier with his next election not far away should hopefully cuckold any potential partisan Scomo influence in curtailing a GF grab. Sydney could probably get the Grand Final at a moment's notice, but it would look politically suspect if they got it right now.

What a load of rubbish. QLD 'very deserving'. Give me a break. They don't deserve the grand final more than any other state. Just because back-handers are being exchanged between the QLD Government and the AFL doesn't mean QLD and the Gabba deserve the AFL grand final if it is not played at the MCG.

Like the AFL are going to play finals at regional stadiums. What drugs are you on?

And how is NSW receiving the AFL grand final looking 'politically suspect'. Clueless. ANZ Stadium is the second biggest sporting stadium in Australia though the surface is terrible and I wouldn't want it played there.

Just because the WA and SA governments put the health of their general population before the AFL doesn't mean the AFL should be so childish to play the grand final at the Gabba - a run down stadium which barely holds 40,000 people.

Do you really think Queenslanders are going to turn up to watch two neutral teams play in a grand final if Brisbane don't make it.

At least by playing it in WA or SA - two traditional football states - you are pretty much guaranteed a crowd because they love the game and have their roots well established in the sport.

Just move the grand final to Perth Gil. That's what the people want.

You only need to fly in 2 teams anyway. It's not that difficult. McGowan would make an exception for it.

For the teams, maybe.
For Gil and the Melbourne Megalomaniac Mafia, no freakin chance, therefor Queensland are welcome to it.

The general line of reasoning from many Western Australian posters here:

1. prejudice against a rugby state (nevermind a SoO held in WA)
2. earned entitlement among non-Vic states (WA has always served an appreciable parochial role for non-Vics in general, and have wanted a GF for years, but just recognise the special case of this season)
3. crowd-focus in a Covid-year (I'm just articulating how QLD would present a contingency plan given AFL quality stadiums in disparate locations, making it the most suitable option for a state-only finals series, better to hold it in worst case scenario than not at all)

I'm a West Coast fan and live in Queensland, so I have my head in both camps. I'm just articulating a case for QLD (call it the "Troptober Premiership" if you will).

I don't mind if it's in QLD. My only reasoning for it to be in perth would be the AFL would be losing 8-10 million having it at the Gabba compared to Perth. The AFL do everything for money so that would make no sense unless the QLD government are going to chip in the extra cash.

I completely agree, and that is where the intrigue lies. Seeing how much that short-term bottom line plays a persuasive role given what we know of AFL House. There is a strong argument for Perth.

Especially when you have taken a 600 million dollar loan out to play the season. I honestly think it will be about how they can get their fat cats there more than the best venue for the game.

Ironic, when they moved the grand final to the Gabba and Brisbane makes the grand final, you know Victorians will complain. However, last year's grand finalist's (Richmond) had a home grand final and no one bats an eye.

So you’ve conflated two hypotheses into a third?

If the first two occur then I’m sure someone will complain from somewhere - they always do. it is an indisputable fact though that Richmond played in last years GF at the ‘G and there were complaints on BF about this (and still are).

FWIW, this Victorian doesn‘t care where the GF is played this year and will just be happy if it goes ahead. I don’t think it will be in Melbourne and think Qld, WA, NSW and SA all have good arguments for it to be played there. If it’s in Qld and the Lions (or suns) make it, good luck to them, no complaining from me.

For a start, no-one is going to a GF if they have to quarantine for two weeks afterwards.

SA has community transmission of the virus and reduced capacity to 10k.

WA should have it. Reward for a traditional footy state and great contributor to the game.

The atmosphere would be more legit
I would love that to be honest, actually the way things are going not sure who is going to host it. When do you reckon they will make the final decision?

Any leaks of a potential Gabba Grand Final obviously generate a bit of talkback blather traction at the moment, therefore I'd be skeptical of some of that coverage for now. Too exploitable as airtime, regardless of merit.
