I was at this gig:

Michael Jackson, Olympic Park, Melbourne, November 13, 1987 - one of the true greats and the best dancer I've ever seen (and I've seen the Bolshoi Ballet and other renowned dance companies). The man was made of rubber, he was so flexible!

CliffMc, Lisa is great but Merry Clayton's vocals in the original recording are, IMO, better.
Yes, she did a terrific job but this is about live performances. Merry couldn't bear to even listen the song, let alone perform live after she miscarried the day after she recorded her vocals. She attributes her miscarriage to the strain of doing the song.
In her words “We lost a little girl. It took me years and years and years to get over that. You had all this success with Gimme Shelter and you had the heartbreak with this song. It left a dark taste in my mouth. It was a rough, rough time.”
You would expect that a studio recording would be better, when it's recorded over and over until they get the sound they want.
