Just wanted to congratulate Peter Bell on bothering to show up to the game on Saturday. From all reports he played really well.

He did admit that he felt fatigued in the second half, and was quoted as saying that he "... definitely needs more footy..." and "...you can't replicate match fitness."

Just my opinion, but maybe a full preseason and training with his own team might help a bit too.

You do realise that this is not a new concept, don't you skippy??

It may be unusual, but if anyone is is professional enough to do it, then that person is Peter Bell.:thumbsu:

Only playing half a game and getting 16 touches tends to back up my point.:thumbsu:

I have an opinion as well. Drugs are bad, mmmmm'kay.

Good on Part-time Pete for somehow getting to play AFL football, without the having to put himself through rigours of a proper pre-season and weekly training throughout the season.

Yes, I do understand that it is not a new concept. But then again, neither is murder - but that doesn't make it right does it? IMO part time players have no place in modern day footy.

It sends out the message that if you are a good player, but your passion for your team and the game are on the slide, we will set up special rules for you.

As such, I think it is a moronic decision by a coach who is trying to establish himself as being tough on his playing group.

PS. Not really. He only played half a game because he wasn't fit enough. If you are happy with that, then good luck to you. It isn't just about him and his possession count. It's about team stability and comradeship.

If we adopted the same policy with Nathan Ablett we would probably still have our CHF. Ah well, different club, different standards.

They dont have a choice with the miserly selection of midfielders they have. A half done Peter Bell > the rest of Fremantles midfielders. Even Paul "have another mrs macs pie" Haselby is second in line behind Belly and he is out for the season.

Fair enough, that is your opinion. So I guess all those kids who are studying betta get their arse out of uni and TAFE!!

The kids who are doing apprenticeships had betted quit work as well.

Just because Belly does not attend training, does not make him a part-time footballer. He has a strict routine that is laid down by thhe coaching staff and we are comfortable in the knowledge that he is professional enough to stick to it.

That's crap and you know it.

This is an exceptional circumstance involving an exceptional player.

Belly is revered and respected by everyone in the group. If he wasn't we wouldn't be doing this.

Oh bullshit.

By all means make that call if Bell doesn't deliver this season.

However, at present, you are crystal ball gazing and not doing a very good job of it.

Fair dinkum Skippy??

What is wrong with you??

Was Bell the only senior player in the AFL to only play one half of a practice match this week??

Plenty of other players did this. It's got nothing to do with actual fitness and everything to do with easing a senior player back into the squad without overdoing it.

Let's get one thing straight.

If the coaching staff, or Peter Bell himself, don't believe that his fitness levels are right, HE WONT PLAY!!!

Dont agree he is a little "rotund"? Like the way he goes about his game, but he isn't trim, never will be. He will still have puppy fat when he is 50.

He was never, ever fitter than he was this year. Not an ounce of fat on him.

It's a bloody crying shame.:(

First of all Bushie. i admire your belief in your coaching staff and Belly. On one thing we can agree - Peter Bell is an AFL champion. Now, to the rest of it...

Fair enough, that is your opinion. So I guess all those kids who are studying betta get their arse out of uni and TAFE!!

Hmmm. Bushie, I think you are clutching at straws a bit here mate. To link living in a seperate city to your AFL team-mates, and enrolling in Uni or gaining an apprenticeship is a very long bow to draw. I am not against the ideology of "part-timism" (copyright skipjack 2008) in general, only in this instance.

And I'm sorry, but
...just because Belly does not attend training
DOES make him a part time footballer.

I said, the team is setting up a special rule for a good player. Your response.. No they aren't, they are setting up a special rule for a good player. ;)

I'm not saying Bell won't have a good season. He will more than likely carry on as per usual. As I have agreed with you, he is a class player.

What you have failed to address is the impact on the playing group. What about specific drills / set plays that are practiced during the week? How can Belly bark orders at someone that he hasn't seen all week with the same amount of authority he would have in 07? How will other players react after they worked their guts out all week and he swans in on Thursday?

C'mon mate. Get a bit of a sense of humour. You can't blame me for taking the opportunity of using his direct quote against him in this instance. He himself admitted that he needed to play more footy. I am suggesting that if he had done a full preseason with his team mates he would be further progressed than he is currently.

It doesn't matter how professional your attitude is, training by yourself is not the same as with your team.

So you support "part-timism"...copyright adhered to....but not in this particular instance?

WTF??

So if Shane Crawford, for example, wanted to do the same, it would be OK??

I said, the team is setting up a special rule for a good player. Your response.. No they aren't, they are setting up a special rule for a good player. ;)

No you didn't. You said his passion for the club was waning, ad that is bullshit. He has a very substantial investment in Geraldton that he wants to oversee, but it doesn't lessen his commitment to the club.

If you watched Bell closely last year, he was very quiet on the ground anyway. He is more of a leader by inspiration than communication. Pav, J.Carr and McPharlin do most of the talking.

As for set plays and drills....mate this is footy, not nuclear physics and Belly would be given videos and teamplans to study. A couple of practices is all he needs with his experience.

And this perceived jealousy/resentment theory that you are banging on about, is not an issue.

When the little man puts his body on the line and bounces back up to hand ball out of the pack, I am sure that there will not be one player who resents his presence.

Look it is not ideal. I grant you.

In a perfect world, we would prefer him in Perth.

However, I firmly believe that we are a better team with him and Harvey was adamant about that as well.

Now that we have lost Haselby we are damn lucky that he was prepared to go around for another year.

Should ask your mob, Chris Langford did a similar thing for years - he lived in Sydney.

Dont worry about that, Belly is the only one winning possession for the Dockers, no one will get in his way. He will handpass it to a team mate when he sees fit.

Completely different era. I specifically mentioned the "modern era" of football. Are there any other current players doing it? No.

So you support "part-timism"...copyright adhered to....but not in this particular instance?

WTF??

So if Shane Crawford, for example, wanted to do the same, it would be OK??

No, not at all. If Crawfs (and lets clear this up right now - any other Hawthorn player for that matter) wanted to do it, (insert living in tasmania joke) I wouldn't be happy about it. I want blokes on my team that want to be there and want to train with their mates. The fact is if a player moves away from the city his team is located in, the footy club is no longer their priority number one - so move on.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear earlier. I specifically mentioned part-time players not having a part in modern footy. Your comment regarding students and those in appreticeships tried to make it sound like I think that all members of society should work full-time or nothing.

That's not what I was saying at all, so I replied with my "part-timism" (thanks for adhering to the copyright) comment. Ie: Some people work part time. Good on them. But I don't think it works in this case. Eg: anyone playing AFL football.

No you didn't. You said his passion for the club was waning, ad that is bullshit. He has a very substantial investment in Geraldton that he wants to oversee, but it doesn't lessen his commitment to the club.

If a Hawthorn player wanted to retire, and moved to a different city, only to be coaxed back under the provision that he could live away from the team and train once a week, I would question his passion for the club. You should be doing the same.

You must admit it sets a precedent though? What if Pav wants to live in Adelaide? Does the club say yes or no?

Troubling signs from Fremantle - Their best midfielder half baked and their second best midfielder wont even play a home and away game for 2008. :)

As opposed to your two best either leaving the club because there sick of the poor culture or the second who helped to install said culture being sacked.:) ;)
