Greens plan could skittle Dogs

Brad Ryan | October 28, 2008 02:09pm

  • THE Western Bulldogs' future is under threat after the Greens moved to block approval of the club's redevelopment of Whitten Oval.
Western Metropolitan state Greens MP Colleen Hartland plans to move a disallowance motion in Parliament tomorrow which, if successful, would hand planning control back to Maribyrnong Council, the Hobsons Bay Leader reports.

Western Bulldogs president David Smorgon said that could send the club broke because funding was dependent on the approval.

He said the club could not afford any further project delays.

“The club would probably not survive, given the financial repercussions, if the motion was passed,’’ Mr Smorgon said.

He today labelled the Greens “nuts” for trying to block the project.

Is this ****en serious?

Excuse me for butting in on your board guys -

but EFFFING GREENS!!!!!! WO has been there before those lentil eaters were a twinkle in Bob Brown's eyes.

Should stick to "tree hugging" and "butt out-ski" on the footy. Surely they have other things on their minds, like, doing up a roster for fire fighting come the Vic bushfire season. Oh no, they don't do they, never seen a Green with a fire hose in his/her hand.

Madden says Bulldogs have become a 'political football'

The Victorian Opposition’s collusion with the Greens is putting in jeopardy a major redevelopment in the western suburbs – and the future of the Western bulldogs Football Club, the Planning Minister Justin Madden said today.
Mr Madden today visited the $30 million redevelopment of Whitten Oval which is now under threat after the Liberal Party agreed to let the Greens Party oppose the project in the State Parliament.

Greens Party MLC Colleen Hartland will tomorrow move a disallowance motion to stop the Planning minister being the responsible authority for the development which struck an impasse at Maribyrnong Council.

Ms Hartland is moving this motion with the endorsement of Liberal Party Upper House Leader David Davis. Ms Hartland is seeking to move a disallowance to Amendment C75.

Pretty serious stuff during the middle of a World financial crisis, could have the potential in these troubled times to bring down the club.

Western Bulldogs President David Smorgon thanked Minister Madden and his goverment for their continued support and agreed that the Western Bulldogs financial future was reliant on the completition of the Redevelopment.
"What would we do with this if we can't complete it?" he asked today while standing in the John Gent Stand that has now been gutted in preparation of construction of the new Club headquarters and home to Victoria University's School of Human Movement.

From the same article

Very blunt words from Smorgon, if this does not go ahead the Dogs financial future is gone.

Hartland moves to restore democracy on Whitten Oval development

09-10-2008 Greens MLC Colleen Hartland moved a disallowance motion in Victorian Parliament yesterday. If successful, it would revoke the Planning Minister's move to take over planning control of the Whitten Oval development, and restore City of Maribyrnong as the planning authority.

"I've made no secret about my plans. From the day the Minister amended the planning scheme I said I would move to disallow it, because I think the people who live in the area should have a say, and important planning changes should be discussed in an open and accountable way through local council," said Colleen Hartland MLC.

"The Minister shouldn't have sacked City of Maribyrnong as the planning authority, because they didn't do anything wrong. They worked hard, and were honest about everything. All they did was stand up to the Bulldogs and ask them to provide the sort of information the community needs on a development that is going to affect them. That's why we have local councils, after all."

"Mr Madden said the issue needed to resolved quickly. Then he dragged his feet for the full statutory time limit before bringing this issue to Parliament – from 25 July to 7 October. Ironically, the City of Maribyrnong would have gone through the full public planning process by now, from go to whoa."

"The best result would be for the Bulldogs to sit down with City of Maribyrnong and find a way forward that would bring benefit to the community."

"I look forward to the debate", said Ms Hartland.

Ms Hartland's motion must be debated within ten parliamentary sitting days of 8 October 2008.

Too True and as for the City of Maribyrnong - pffffft!!! those tossers, as an ex Western Suburbs resident glad i gave a Green candidate a verbal srpay one morning while on way to work when this lentil eater was waving election pamphlets under my nose at Yarraville Station. The morning isn't my best time of the day.

my email:

Hi. I wondered what - practically - do you think the local community would object to? I believe this is a theoretical point scoring on your behalf that could do real damage to the local community if the club was to fold.

Obviously you dont appreciate football, which is your perogative, but to a large number of western suburbs people it is an important matter and if you think you will be thanked for 'championing their cause' you are gravely mistaken. You have just done irreparable harm to your party and to your own reputation particularly.

Do you hail from the western suburbs? Do you currently reside there? For how long? What is your connection to this matter specifically?

sincerely

This is my email, I tried to sound as smart as I could.. i guess.

Hi, Can I just ask one question? How will the people of the Western Suburbs be suffering from the plans? There is no greater harm that could be done to the western suburbs then threatening the very existence of the club that we love.

Are you a western suburbs girl? Did you grow up in the western suburbs? or are you just some stupid politician that just wanted to appear as someone important in politics.

The greens have been looked upon the community as a harmless joke, now you will be looked upon as threat to the people of the western suburbs and in the future, I hope, fold as a party.

p.s stuff the liberals too now that John Howard is gone, they are starting to look like the greens.

Hey stef,

Do you mind if I copy some of your email in an email of my own?

I kept mine fairly simple

What has putting the interests of the Western Bulldogs Football Club at risk got to do with any Greens elected promises ?

Your prompt plain English response would be appreciated..

Hi, i emailed in and got this back:
Thanks for your email. Colleen's in parliament so I am answering on her behalf.

Firstly, please be assured that nothing Colleen is doing will delay the project - at least not any more than the Minister has delayed it (council were due to deliberate on it on 16 September. The Minister intervened on 24 July but delayed bringing it to parliament until 7 October).

Colleen's aim is to draw attention to issues such as the local footy leagues, and the promises that the Bulldogs had made to Council that they would give good space to the western region footy league and the women's footy league, in the new development, in return for funding etc.

When the Minster took over the project, we lost all those guarantees.

So Colleen's going to ask him for assurances on that in parliament tomorrow - on the record.

The Liberals will vote with the Government, as usual, so hopefully it will all be over tomorrow. If Colleen's motion was not debated, Mr Madden's amendment would still be on the notice paper at Parliament until December.

Its okay, didnt use much of it in the end.

My effort:

Hello,

What are you trying to acheive here? Trying to protect the interests of the community? Ensuring people are allowed their say?

Well let me tell you this. A lot of people's interests will be affected very negatively, if you go through with your planned motion. Is this what you want?

Plus it does nothing for your personal reputation and the reputation of your party. Not that you ever had it, but you and your party will never receive a vote from me if this goes ahead.

Thankyou.

They are clutching a straws - they carry on about the theoretical 'right of residents to make comment' being blown away after a certain date. Did anyone actually make comment before that date? no. Its all about getting their toes stepped on. Bruised egos looking for any justification.

They allude (now) that the dogs wont make space for the local footy leagues. they dont come out and say anything specific, like "the dogs said they wont make the space" - they just throw some mud and hope it will stick. Typical politicians in action. In the name of defending the rights of the people.

The LIberals are also part of this pathetic attempt to stymie the Bulldogs. They are just as much to blame as they are supporting this ridiculous hold up to proceedings.
Justin Madden is right, we are being used as a political football.

Pompello Fruit is also in Victoria street near her office, although they don't sell rotten tomatoes they do sell eggs, so please feel free to drop by and pick some up on your way past

Not many things piss me off, but this does.

Surely we will hold up our end of the bargain in anything we have promised. If they want official confirmation of that in light of the intervention by the state government then we should give it.

If it's anything more serious and our club is put in danger those responsible better look out.

I'm nowhere near there, and I would not normally condone incitement.

But the suggestion in your post definitely poses some interesting ideas and actions.
