Precis of our History:
Season 4 saw the Gumbies enter the league under the name ‘Geelong Gumbies’, founded and captained by Catman, with a blue and white colour scheme similar to their AFL namesake. Finals followed in season 5, and a grand final in season 11, as the team made a solid entry to the league. It would not be until season 16 that the Gumbies experienced the ultimate, taking out the premiership by a solitary point.
Alas, the premiership did not bring sustained success as the club was wracked shortly thereafter by an extended period of instability, retirements, apathy, and identity issues (including five seasons known as the ‘Geelong Wolves’). Change came in the late season twenties as the Gumbies, now settled on the name Gumbies FFC, embarked on off-field growth combined with very good on field showings, punctuated by a 54-point win in the season 36 grand final.
Three things have remained constant at the Gumbies throughout their history- the blue colour scheme, finals struggles and never being too far from a headline.
Club Song (to the tune of Blue is the Colour):
We are the Gumbies
And qootball is the game
We're all together
There’s banter to proclaim
So cheer us on
Through the device, in your domain
'Cause Gumbies, Gumbies is our name!
Blue are the colours, qootball is the game
We're all together and winning is our aim
So cheer us on through the good and pain
From Geelong, Gumbies is our name.
