Hi guys seem as 2022 is done and dusted for the Giants I thought it would be nice to look to the future and see what our team may look like in 3 years time.
Obviously there will be trades done and players lost but could be a nice discussion point.

The players that are 30 years old and will be 33 in 3 years time and likely to be on the way out over the next 3 years are:

The players under 25 and where the most improvement needs to come from are:

When looking at this the Giants don't need a rebuild, just need more games and development into the players under 25.

As it currently sits we have pick #4, #22, #40, #57, #58 in the upcoming draft. With likely more picks to come in through the draft if Taranto, Bruhn leave.

Decent chance we're looking at 4 picks in the top 25 this year so a really good opportunity to add talent in multiple areas. Think our top 2 picks should be used on mid/small forward and a KPF if we could walk away with Sheezel and maybe Lemmey (or just a top KPF) with top 2 picks think that'd be a really good outcome, not sure how realistic that is.

We have no issue with being too old.
It is a very young list with a good amount of players in or about to enter into the right age bracket.

Of our older players, 4 are fringe players.

Indeed, that's a reasonable age spread. Of the over 30s, half are in the best 22 but are liable to get pushed out, the other half are essentially "first reserves". We just need to manage their departures (fringe to retirement, best 22 to first reserves) as the 25 to 28 group move into their 30s.

The 25-28 group are mostly first grade material - so best use of their prime years - and with the over 30s that's half the team. We've perhaps thinned out 2 to 3 too many in this group, but overall it's not too bad.

Another decent chunk of the first grade team comes from the top ages (23-24) of the younger block, with some promising talent amongst the younger players.

I actually think that there's enough talent on the team. I have no idea WTF happened this year - I guess I believe that Leon just ran out of puff, and Spike is too "same same" to extract something different.

A couple of decent selections this year - KPF, decent small/medium forward or two, and a zippier mid will help. The biggest issue since 2017 has been our injury toll, though, and this year has been no different. if we could fix that, and add a coach with a decent gameplan, and we would become significantly better on field.

Really hope whoever the coach is next year explores Perryman being used more as a centre bounce midfielder, he was really good in there when he got a crack. Doesn't really solve our pace issues in our midfield but gives us a better user coming out of stoppages.

We do need to think of the future and players such as Kelly, TFG, Kennedy, Cogs will lead the youth and teach the culture of the club.

But 1st and foremost the club at a board level has lost its way.

Being based in not only two completely different locations, but also frontier regions has held the club back.
We need to decide as a club are we the GWS Giants or are we the Canberra Giants. Either one will work given patience and effort.

No good worrying about players or coaches if the club itself is fundamentally broken or confused.

Would really like to see him get an extended go at half back for us instead of using him up the ground a bit more, maybe a few CBA's to mix up that midfield group a bit but mainly off half back. Wing just doesn't seem suited of him, he's a natural half back all through his junior years and think he should be played there.

Sorry from where I sat as someone hoping the Giants succeed the issue was their ball movement not defensive efforts often they just couldnt score especially at critical times of games.
They just bogged down after moving the ball from half back.

He maybe lost his confidence off half back. He has the attacking mind-set to kick in-board, but he's often intercepted. Last week, HH showed the way out of the back line, he's quickly become our most attacking player in the set-up. Agree that Ash's dash is best suited to run & bounce off half back, but yeah, gets the head wobbles. To develop him, picking the right next head coach is crucial! I have no idea who it will be.

Although I see the reason for the doom and gloom with the team right now, I still compare us to Collingwood of last year. Remember Collingwood finished 2nd to last in 2021 and then had a huge bounce this year. We are in a similar position this year with both of us sacking coaches. Still have undoubted talent but a lot are down on form and or missing due to injuries.

We will lose some quality this off season with Taranto & Bruhn all but out the door. Possibly losing Hopper as well but we have cover for these guys and it actually will assist us in giving more opportunities to young midfielders who may offer something a little different than a big bodied midfielder who has poor disposal.

Even despite losing 3 or 4 best 22 players potentially this trade period, I still think this team has lots of good players that are really talented!
Cogs, Kelly, Whitfield, Greene, Finn, Green, Cumming, Idun, Taylor, Buckley, Stone, HH, Perryman, Peatling and Ash plus at least 3 firsts in this years draft. Most of those guys are under the age of 25 with their best footy ahead of them losing Taranto, Hopper, Bruhn and Bobby is unfortunate but there really isn't a reason for this team to not be making the 8 if we get the right coach, the pieces are there they just have to be put together.

In the past we have let go Steele and Kennedy and it was far from doom and gloom, quite the opposite. They are both great players but we had guys just as good, same situation has come around again.

The damning part for our team is that on the rare occasions when they have been defensively accountable we have been quite outstanding. Sadly it’s rarely for a full game and generally fades out with the players again being selfish, lazy and unaccountable.

Unless a new coach can embed defensive and team first values into our club we will always be a frustrating, shitty development team.

Now that it looks like these dumbos that overpaid and screwed our cap are doing a full rebuild perhaps there will be an opportunity to teach these key core values to young ears that may listen.

Is there any reason other than virtue signaling that the club has not reverted our logo? This is the kind of annoying nonsense we do which makes no sense, the indigenous round is a great thing and it’s great that we embrace this but it was round 10/11 and it’s now round 18. Does this signify that our logo is meaningless?

The problem with this is that our club’s actual regard for indigenous players is shithouse.

We have struggled to draft, hold or develop any indigenous talent and never thought to employ a dedicated indigenous welfare officer to assist even though we would have the most inexperienced soft cap experience to assist the head coach. Just look at what Eddie Betts has achieved at Geelong to see what that role can do.

To do the right thing, or be seen to be doing the right thing. GWS management chooses the latter every time.

Will be interesting to see how Clarkson goes some of his footy style at Hawthorn was horrible stuff will he go the way of Pagan and Malthouse or will he adapt and create an attacking style that can win games wouldn't be paying millions to find out.

Look I do half agree with the sentiment because there are some slower inside mids that'll be around the range of our picks, so it's likely we'll end up with them if we're being honest. Though the likes of Phillipou, Cadman, Busslinger, Keeler and Jefferson are worth getting excited about for us early, only to have our dreams crushed with Jhye Clark and Mitch Szybkowski who are just what we already have with some added flair
