Haddin's Ashes?

There have been far more underserving selections from other states in recent years than NSW. Several New South Welshmen can consider themselves fairly unlucky as far as Test selection goes (Henriques, O'Keefe).

NSW bias is a myth. Selectors will often pick players on the basis of potential when there are others whose performances seem more deserving; only when those players are baggy blues do people (read: Victorians) cry foul.

Another brilliant counter-attacking innings today, it really has been a golden summer for Haddin, with both bat and gloves.

He was in horrible form prior to losing his spot to Matthew Wade, and to be honest I really didn't think he'd fight his way back.
I wasn't wrapt when he was selected to go to England, but upon reflection I could at least acknowledge the need for a hard-nosed professional in the side, and the talk was he was over his form issues, which pretty clearly were at least partially a very-understandable side-effect of having a seriously ill child at the time.

Since he's been back he's barely put a foot wrong, his batting has been commanding, and just as importantly his keeping has reminded Australians of the value of a good, in-form man behind the stumps.

I was a bit of a Wade fan, but his keeping was exposed at the top level unfortunately.

Haddin himself endured the horror-patch with bat and gloves I mentioned before, but that's really a distant memory now as he has been one of the key factors in this hugely enjoyable Ashes winning series.

Murray Bennett, Alan Turner, Dirk Wellham,Dave Gilbert, Greg Dyer, Phil Emery, Gavin Robertson, Matthew Nicholson, Usman Khawaja, Moise Henriques all gifted with a baggy green with the baggy blue cap in a brown paper bag to save making 2 presentations . :thumbsu:

Agreed with the whole NSW thing Caesar but how exactly has Henriques been unlucky?

Got dropped after three Tests on the toughest tour of them all, despite a very strong debut, whilst the chronically underperforming Watson remained in the team to do essentially the same role.

Rank revisionism. Plenty of those were justified selections at the time, even if you could argue that others deserved it more. And for every NSW dud selected on questionable records you can name, there's a few Quineys, McGains, Dohertys and so forth that can be added to them.

Always the Victorians with the persecution complex.

Saved the aussies again today (well he and Smith together).
Don't know how he does it, but when other wickets were falling he comes in and makes it look pretty easy when others have been very scratchy.

He and Johnson really should get a joint man of the series award.

Watson didn't really have anything to do with Henriques' position. Obviously the are both seaming all rounders but they were never vying for the same spot. Henriques as you said had a strong debut but in the next two tests, he looked out of his depth and was dropped from a team desperately trying to spark a change. Whilst he was far from the problem in the first place, the logic in his dropping can be understood. Was he deserving of another go? Perhaps. He wasn't the only one who was failing but it was a fairly small non-selection compared to many over the last couple of years.

ABC mentioned it and now even Warney on Channel 9 is discussing it now.

You can understand him making the call but he is playing too well - and there isn't a logical successor at this stage. Wade has gone backwards, Paine still needs more game time. Whoever is playing for NSW will get the call up regardless of form.

It will be damn depressing for Lyon if Wade is brought back. Ugh.

To say they were "gifted" a baggy green is pretty disrespectful. They would have been selected for good reasons at the time.

I mentioned this in the match thread but even Gilchrist in his prime didn't ever have a series that could match what Haddin's produced here.

I may be in the minority but I reckon he could do worse than bow out now. Has a family to think about and can go out on top and be remembered largely for what he did in his final test series. Not great timing from a team perspective but these things happen. Hussey went out before we were ready but we have moved on. I suspect we will have to do the same with Haddin shortly.

Rhino sent in a text to Gilchrist in the BBL commentry and Haddin has confirmed that he is not retiring.

Big relief that it was all much ado about nothing. Need Haddin to hang around til at least the end of the UAE tour which would probably be the ideal time for him to bow out. He says he wants to get to the World Cup but that India series at home would be good preparation for his replacement in the lead up to the '15 Ashes.

Haddin has been amazing with the bat but from what I've seen, the truly electrifying stuff for the spectators, fans and commentators has been provided by Johnson.

He provided the real series changing moment with that 7/40 at Adelaide. By the time the series was won, everyone had him as MOTS. I can't see how that will change.

I have never been a fan of Haddin, but his 10 Tests (Including 5 in England) have been world class and personally would have no issues awarding him man of the series.

He can't go. We don't have a logical successor. Paine would be the closest I guess but the cupboard is fairly bare after him. Phil Hughes could be a useful keeper/batsman if he put his mind to it I guess.

Regardless of the retirement speculation, there are lots of people on Bigfooty (particularly Victorians) that are eating humble pie at the moment in light of Haddin's pure quality.

I've been on the Hughes as keeper bandwagon for years - I think it's a genuine and logical option.

You don't want to go there my friend.

His keeping as well as his batting has been good in Aus. His batting apart from one innings at TB was ordinary in England and he made a couple of errors with the gloves but the general lack of sloppiness compared with Wade is marked.

Still reckon MJ would be stiff to have to share it.

From a team and fan's perspective, then I guess that's good to hear. But I still like the notion of going out on top. Warne, Langer, McGrath and Hussey are recent players who did it and I doubt any of that group have any regrets.

Gilly scored more runs in two less tests against South Africa... In South Africa
