This rule still flabergasts me....

Umps pay the ticky touchwodd hand leaning on the back, and yet other times fair dinkum shoves go unnoticed.. The worst villain of this is Buddy Franklin. he is consistently outstretching his arms and pushing his opponent in the back ( classic case in the 1st 1/4 against Richmond last night ), and yet the umps let it go...

Very confusing?!?

The rule itself is very confusing.

As for Buddy - I think the times everyone jumps into his back/holds onto him and gets away with it evens it out.

It is inconsistent mostly because umpires cannot see every contact from the right angle to judge properly.

I saw highlights of the 1996 GF yesterday and was reminded how much the rules of the game have changed in that time. Modern umpires would have been blowing the whistle about every ten to 20 seconds I kid you not. Carey was a great player but was scragged so much in that game. If they had the rules they have now back then players like Carey and Modra who were always scragged would have been unstoppable. Buddy can be thankful he plays today but comparisons should bear the rule changes in mind.

i never thought the rule was all that confusing: if there is a hand in the back - it's a free kick - simple as that.

but as you've just said Freo DR. you just can't see everything, and umpires can't get into that position all the time - and the only way to see all this is with 6 field umpires (one on each side of the play at every contest - DEFINITELY not suggesting we need 6 field umpires though).

It's why we see free-kicks given when there is a hand out but no contact is made as we've seen a couple of times this year.

I call it the "recession" ie the rule we had to have. From under 10's you're told to get in front. The way the rule was interpreted before "hands in the back" the last place you wanted to be in a marking contest was in front when Dunstall, Lynch, Lockett, Lloyd etc could just shove you under the ball and take the mark. It should encourage genuine body use ala Peter Hudson.
