Negative differential all year.

Including not paying an obvious free kick late in the prelim.

Agenda.

You don’t have to like it.

But it is what it is.
Explains why the Giants received two 50m penalties to the top of the goal square during the game. The umpires must hate them!
They sell far more licensed premiership merch to Pies fans than they would Giants fans.

The agenda is real.

Not my fault you can’t see it.
You heard it here, folks! The AFL makes more money from premiership stubby holders than long-term success in the northern states.

They make them for about $2 and sell them for $15.

The margin is unbelievable!

There are a lot of us Collingwood supporters who do like our stubby holders …

… let’s assume your numbers, and for the purposes of the discussion there is zero overhead, and 1 million Collingwood supporters buy a new stubby holder every year …

… that’s $13 million profit. Which is bugger all compared with the ~$650 million the broadcasters pay every year for TV rights.

The “agenda conspiracy against my team” are always kind of lame. But the mental gymnastics with this one is fantastic.

To come up with a scenario where the AFL would literally invent a brand new club out of thin air, then give them any number of concessions and draft picks, only to try and get them to fail by letting them lose the free kick count by -1 in a game is beyond me.

Let’s see what happens at the end of the year. In the finals.

A-la 2016 Prelim & 2023 Prelim

The intent to press and push forward and be daring through the corridor is there, but the fundamental connection and execution is lacking. Also Moore needs to stop being lazy and unaccountable and actually go back to defending - he is really letting them down defensively.

Dramatically over reactions in here whilst the usual Collingwood trolls having a laugh and making silly comments.

Giants and Swans are in almost everyone’s top 4 predictions and the Saints aren’t pushovers. Some people are acting like the Pies are zip and 3 after playing North, Hawthorn and WCE.

Definitely are alarm bells, as the usual manic and intensity is missing. As BT said, they’re playing like their bellies are full.

The challenge isn’t that they’ve been ‘found out’ or that they’re older, it’s that they aren’t playing like a side that wants to prove a point, or challenge for a premiership. The only change needs to come from the coaching panel, and like last year, instil that killer instinct back into the playing group.

In patches, Collingwood’s best was still good enough in all 3 games, but they didn’t do it for long enough to translate it to scoreboard pressure.

I don’t reckon personnel is the issue, though McStay up forward would make a huge difference, they’ve got the list to qualify, and the then it’s a different ball game in September.

I’m not confident against the Lions on Easter Thursday, but these are the games clubs seem to pull out of their arse and win, ruining everyone’s tips.

de Goey is a worry. Really looks like he's content and satisfied a footballer. Has all the traits to take another step up and become a top 10 player but a but like Jake Stringer, may never reach his full potential.

Has there been a more satisfying crowd sight in recent memory than Pies fans losing their minds over Ginnivan? Telling everyone us for years how great he is for stirring everyone else up, he’s meant to be the villain, he’s an entertainer, and that everyone is just salty, oh and also DON’T BOO HIM! - only to see the most vitriol filled tears all of yesterday.

3 of the last 4 premiers will have failed to make finals the following year.

Competition is so tight, a drop of 10-15% in your intensity coupled with a few injuries and you are out of the 8. Same thing can happen next year too.

That's why it's rare to go back to back

If Collingwood miss finals it will mean 3 of the last 4 Premiers missed finals altogether and the 4th Premier in that period(Melbourne) did not win a final. Meaning none of the last 4 Premiers will have won a final in the following season. Has this happened before in the AFL era?

How recent Premiers have fared in the season following their flag:

2023 Premier Collingwood - look like missing finals
2022 Premier Geelong - missed finals
2021 Premier Melbourne - made finals but out in straight sets.
2020 Premier Richmond - missed finals
2019 Premier Richmond - won flag
2018 Premier Eagles - won 1 final
2017 Premier Richmond - won 1 final
2016 Premier Bulldogs - missed finals
2015 Premier Hawthorn - made finals but out in straight sets.
2014 Premier Hawthorn - won flag
2013 Premier Hawthorn - won flag
2012 Premier Swans - won 1 final
2011 Premier Geelong - lost only final
2010 Premier Collingwood - won 2 finals
2009 Premier Geelong - won 1 final
2008 Premier Hawthorn - missed finals
2007 Premier Geelong - won 2 finals
2006 Premier Eagles - made finals but out in straight sets
2005 Premier Swans - won 2 finals
2004 Premier Port Adelaide - won 1 final
2003 Premier Brisbane - won 2 finals
2002 Premier Brisbane - won flag
2001 Premier Brisbane - won flag
2000 Premier Essendon - won 2 finals
1999 Premier North - won 1 final
1998 Premier Adelaide - missed finals
1997 Premier Adelaide - won flag
1996 Premier North - won 2 finals
1995 Premier Carlton - made final but out in straight sets
1994 Premier Eagles - made finals but out in straight sets
1993 Premier Essendon - missed finals
1992 Premier Eagles - won 1 final
1991 Premier Hawthorn - lost only final
1990 Premier Collingwood - missed finals

So there we have the 34 Premiers since the competition became the AFL in 1990.

Of those, in the next season(presuming Collingwood miss finals 2024):

6 won the flag
6 won 2 finals
7 won 1 final

So 19 won at least 1 final

5 made finals but were out in straight sets(lost their only 2 finals)
2 lost their only final
8 missed finals(if we include Collingwood 2024)

The longest previous run of Premiers failing to win a final the following year was 3 years, 1993-94-95 Premiers Bombers, Eagles, Blues.

There were only 2 other occasions where this occurred twice consecutively, 1990-91 Premiers Magpies, Hawks. This means the first 6 AFL Premiers won only 1 final between them in the year following their Premiership.

And 2015-16 Hawks, Bulldogs. This means the only Premiers in the 9 year span 2015-2023 to have won a final in the following year were:

Richmond 2017
Eagles 2018(both won just 1 final)
Richmond 2019.

Outside of Richmond 2019, the other 8 Premiers 2015 to 2023 will have won just 2 finals between them in the following season. Every Premier since 2014 Hawks(10 separate Premiers) has at least lost 1 final the following season(or failed to win a final or missed finals), including 2015 Hawks, 2020 Tigers who were both going B2B.

Total finals won by preceding Premiers 2015-2023(9 years worth of Premiers) is 5. The previous worst run of finals won in a 9 year span was 1990-1998 where the previous premier won 6 finals.

The best 9 year span seems to be 1999 to 2007 where the 9 Premiers all made finals the following year and 8 of them won at least 1 final. They won 16 finals between them.

It will be interesting to see if this current funk in Premier fortunes the following season develops into a longer term trend.

The last 3 premiers were minor premiers too I believe.

Comp is tough nowadays anybody can win if you’re a bit off. We literally beat Sydney and we are 18th

Terrific moment, one for the ages. So ironic.

Collingwood fans are completely insufferable

I always felt with their close wins last year (esp in finals) they way were lucky and over achieved, all it took for this year was the close wins to be halved and the side worked out for them to get to a middle of the table side, they were never going B2B in my view anyway even as the season started.

The thing is I think the no aligned supporters still don't like Gini, we just like seeing Pies supporters having a sook.

The reality is Pies got a flag out of an aged list. Their is no improvement to come from the 9 30yrs on the list, most of whom are going around again, they have 1 good player under 24 and Hill, IQ and McCrearie have all gone backwards this year. They over rated their list to bring in a role player for a first round pick and have set their rebuild back a year.
