List Mgmt. Hawk's List Management for 2025

Usually do one of these before the trade period but was caught-up with other stuff this year so here is my post-trade period update! This is what I have at the moment. As you can see, firstly the list is STACKED in terms of talent (which we already knew) but is also pretty close to being completely full as it is. If what I have is correct, then we have 36 primary list, 4 Cat A and 1 Cat B locked in for next year which leaves us with limited options in terms of drafting next month and SSP/MSD in 2025.

If I had to guess, I'd say we are likely to delist-then-rookie one or both of Gunston and/or Breust for flexibility. Regardless, we can only intake a max of 2 players to primary/Cat A list at the moment plus the option of another Cat B player if we want (which I suspect we will re-sign Bennetts with).

As usual, if you spot any mistakes then please let me know :)

He’s essentially already in an assistant coaching/development coaching role for both the men’s and women’s teams.

No club will take him on without first speaking to him and his manager, and if they do that they’ll just be told “no thanks”.
Sure but how is this not draft tampering/manipulation? . Albeit only the rookie draft.

I personally think that if you stipulate such terms then you shouldn’t be allowed to register for it in the first place.

Sure this scenario is largely harmless but its a can of worms

Harley Reid: I’m only interested in going to Geelong, if any of you’re pick me before then then I’ll just play badminton.

Reid is welcome to give up 10+ years @ $1.5m to play badminton for free if he wants to.

Gunston is under no obligation to play footy. He's had more success than 99% of players ever will & he's part-way transitioned into the next phase of his footy career (mentor/coach). His 2025 salary is assured (by us). If some other idiot club wants to waste a pick on him then he can just retire & move full time into coaching, knowing he gets paid either way.

Reid (when current contact expires) is welcome to sit out 12 months if he wants, then re-enter the game via other means, like how McCarthy got to Freo. (from memory).

It literally happens every year with players getting delisted and then picked back up by their club as a rookie.

We can have up to 3 Category B rookies on the list, so long as the number of players doesn’t exceed the maximum of 44. T
This used to be the case, it changed to 2 Cat B rookies a few years ago.

We can have up to 3 Category B rookies on the list, so long as the number of players doesn’t exceed the maximum of 44. The main list currently sits at 35 players, we have 2 category B players and 4 rookies.

Gunners being re-rookied means we will have 5 rookies. One selection in the national draft takes the primary list to 36. If Anderson is not bid on, he can be preselected as a Cat B rookie for us, so long as we nominated him before the draft.
As eldorado pointed out this isn’t the case anymore.

We will have to take him with our last pick in the draft if no one bids on him.

It will be one pick plus Anderson or 2 picks and we miss out on Anderson.

Anderson gets drafted on our main list if he’s still there after our first pick.
It works that way father sons where the last active pick takes the player if he’s still there.

I don’t think nga’s have quite the same set up given they normally have the cat b option available.

Just depends on how much the club wants him.

If no one bids on him, he can be listed automatically as a Cat A rookie & Gunners will be picked in Rookie draft

We will have
36 on main list
6 on Cat A
2 on Cat B

If we wish we can promote one or 2 currently on rookie list to Senior list too ( See list above on top pinned post)

If the rules state we can list him as a cat A then that will work well for us.

Hey mate what makes him Cat B eligible? I assumed he’s a straight Cat A if not bid on.

I'm sorry, but don't get the angst.
If I get this right - and I think I do, then were JB to hold a spot some other kid doesn't - right?
Remind me who I'm supposed to feel bad for, or is it just when I speak to one I'll be crestfallen and then out both sides of my mouth be equally crestfallen for the other, telling both they were somehow unjustly assessed?

Pro sports guys.
Best of luck Josh chasing this career or any other path you choose.
Family would do well to not insert themselves on public forums, there can quite literally be no benefit.
I'm not sure that one has to feel the action is unjust in order to be crestfallen for the player. I can say I wish things had played out differently.

I also would wish Josh all the best in the future!

It seems tricky for people to follow the numbers, so I'll try to simplify this.

We had two spaces left (max 42) with Gunston on the senior list.

We still have two spaces (max 42) with Gunston on the rookie list.

Ultimately we will be swapping Gunston to the rookie list and a current rookie to the senior list...
(the rookie upgrade counting as the 3rd compulsory 'pick')

Still 2 live picks to take us to 42. 38 senior, 4 rookies.

Correct.

Pick 33 and (hopefully) Anderson in the National Draft.
Gunston in the rookie draft.
Done.

Does not make any sense unless we have something up our sleeve, in which case we need to delist another player. If we only pick up 2 in the ND, we don't need to put Gunners on the rookie list.

If we only have pick 33 and a pick for Cody A we don't need to put Gunners on the Rookie list as we have 2 available main list picks anyway.

If we have someone else in mind the main draft additional to the 2 above, we will need to also delist (and not re-rookie) a current rookie. BUT, are not all of our current players now contracted for 2025?

I find it a confusing move. OR, have I got this wrong.
very well explained by eldo and others. I am not confused anymore :)

Reid wouldn’t still have been drafted by Geelong in that scenario. He wouldn’t have missed out on Jack shit and that’s the point.

Such was the impact he had in some of the closer games i am convinced we would not have made finals last season without Gunston (and Breust) so hope we know what we're doing here.

I do, but cant someone in contention poach him?

Clubs may be interested, but older and contracted players usually stay.
Remember Wingard last year? Same situation. Collingwood asked, Chad said he wanted to stay at Hawthorn, so Collingwood left him alone.

The only exception I can think of was Greenwood. Gold Coast delisted him with the intention of re-drafting him. North picked him up but Gold Coast and Greenwood were both happy about that.

Technically yes, but they won't.

Gunston would likely retire and continue working/playing with the kids at Box Hill if he was selected by another club, especially an interstate one.

Clubs generally understand what the intentions are in these scenarios and will inform other clubs if they would consider stealing them.
I believe it happened with Chad Wingard last season.
