That is pretty accurate for total nation wide support from the biggest to the smallest club. I thought the cats would be higher though.

What this shows is that in terms of latent interest, RL is just as popular (or more) than AR.
It is just that the level of commitment/involvement is much , much lower.
If RL was half as well run, crowds, membership and revenue would be much closer.

is it, why ?
Because a poll if done correctly i.e random sampling, adequate sample size, useful and concise questions is better than a like on a facebook which only for those that use facebook, which is steered towards a certain demographic. They can be lobbied to like it from the club or websites etc. is worth visiting, no other competition from other websites .
Now lets look at the Roy Morgan poll, first it a reputed polling agency so the sampling would be first class the sample size is a huge 36,875 and a simple question of what AFL team do you support. I'll stick to the Morgan Poll thanks

Not even close, if you want to use the internet as a guide look at the 187 dedicated AR websites compared to the 126 Rugby League sites and the AR websites rule even on a global scale or you can look at google searches, 'AFL' compared to 'NRL "Rugby League"' does not even come close

Ok, so explain the post I quoted.
Or, google Rugby League and add that up.
Our code is now known (like it or not) as AFL.
Rugby League is know as Rugby League first, then NRL.
My point was that half of the country follows each code, and we should be glad that our game is very well run/marketed compared to RL.

People need to remember you dont follow or like someone/thing on twitter/facebook because you support them or their club

I follow GA Jr, doesnt mean I follow the suns, just that I want to hear his tweets

given the state of half the AFL facebook club feeds as well, half the people "liking" them are only doing to slag off the club in a way even the bay wouldnt respect

there are much better metrics for measuring club support than either facebook or twitter

I'm not disputing your point, but it's not that hard to get facebook likes. There are companies that sell you 10,000 likes for not much cash. If you make a concerted effort to advertise on facebook you can also bump up your likes (legitimately, but it makes it a lot easier for people to just click on the button).

It's actually pretty dubious that Collingwood and Essendon always appear to be so close in facebook likes, and so far ahead of any other club. It's as if they monitor each other's and when they fall behind they invest in another 500 likes to bump them up over the other one.

So is that basically the order of most popular to least popular in the compitition?

Would be pretty close

I'd say it's not. Plenty of people like the pages of clubs they don't barrack for, pads the numbers for a few clubs.
Not an accurate gauge of support really, either. Think the person that throws them a token like and scarfs up once a year for footy day at work or posts a status if they make the Grand Final.

I think you are wrong!

I think for soft core support it is very accurate. Looks like the hawks have gone well past the tigers and blues.
