Hawthorn
After seeing Caltons weak public stance on the ssm issue and Gils and the AFLs well balance public endorsement I was wondering what hawthorn have said about the issue.

Anyone know?

The fact i can't find anything doesn't say great things about the club. For a club that calls itself the family club, standing up and saying, as an organisation, we support all our employees and supporters right to equality and suppporting the Yes vote would seem appropriate.

Gils explanation of the AFLs stance on afl360 i thought was really good and very well balance. Watch the link.

Urgh...it feels so weird liking something Gil did

Why is the club obligated to say anything on such a divisive issue?

One thing is sure. This plebiscite has brought all the idiots out to play.
It is staggering, yet not surprising, how stupid people can actually be.

You know the club speaks out in support of lots of causes. Depression, bullying, family violence etc. So why shouldn't it come out and make a stance on this issue.

Some issues are important and require good people to stand up in support of other people.

Politics should not be brought into this, i think the AFL supporting one or the other was wrong

Supporting gay marriage is completely different than showing support for depression and family violence. I support gay marriage yet my gay uncle who's been with his partner for 30 years doesn't. This shouldn't be a political debate but simply up to individual churches. Amazing how many people think this is a black and white issue and people not in favour must be an arseh*le.

Despite siding fairly strongly with one side of the argument - I would prefer we keep out of it. You'll end up pissing someone off. I don't have an issue with the AFL voicing their support - or any company/organisation, I am just growing weary of the debate.

I do note that the Herald Sun is making quite a storm in a teacup over it today but didn't blink when the Catholic Church have been quite public about their thoughts on the matter.

I desperately want to know the Hawks' stance on using non-alphanumeric keys in passwords as an extra security device. Why won't they publish their stance on this.

I actully dont want to get into a debate about SSM with people lol. I just wanted to know if the club had released a statement.

I would just say, what if we had a gay player on our list? Would the club have more of an obligation to the player to stand behind him and publicly show him we suppprort his right for equality?

(Just on that point, i know we have at least one gay staff member that works for thw HFC)

And i agree with others. This debate and public vote is stupid. Politics should have nothing to do with it. You, me, pollies, churches should have zero say in who anyone chooses to marry!

So what if a player had a partner who got pregnant... she wanted an abortion and the player wanted to keep the child.

What should be the clubs stance on that?

Pardon the intrusion, but I was just catching up on our discussion on this on our board and somebody mentioned Hawthorn, so I thought I would pop over and see what your club's statement was and the reaction to it.
I haven't seen every club's stance, so not sure if they've all made one or if they're all clear in their support of SSM. Interesting that Hawks don't seem to have made an official statement (I've had a look on the facebook page and there's nothing there).
From the discussion on our page, I would say that most of us are understanding of our club's slightly passive approach. It's clear from their statement that they support SSM, without expressly stating it, and are acknowledging that not all supporters will feel the same way. I thought it was handled well. They don't need to be aggressive in their stance and shove it down people's throats to get their viewpoint across.
Some are stamping their feet and saying that the statement wasn't good enough, but that's effectively saying 'I'm going to ignore the fact that you are clearly in favour of SSM and whine because you aren't supporting it as aggressively as me'.

I think when the Australian government has put the issue to a vote that it is no longer a 'private issue'.
Yes it is. You vote privately, not publicly. There is no need for any unrelated institution to make public statements either way. Since when has any vote made in a polling booth been public? It is private and up to the individual. I would resent the hawthorn football club telling me which party to vote for as well or evenn telling me which party they voted for.

The vote might take place in private - but it is the most public expression of a vote I have ever seen. Take a look on social media - there's not a great deal of private voting occurring.

I don't think the AFL was telling anyone how to vote yesterday - just as an organisation they were making an expression of support for one side of the campaign. I don't think anyone is naive enough to believe that the AFL's endorsement was what anyone was waiting for before making their decision.

If Hawthorn had a pertinent issue that relied on them endorsing a particular result in an election then I would have zero issue with them being active on this front. Say for example if the Hawks needed a certain government in place to be more favourable in the move to Dingley - then I would have zero issue with us doing that, even if I disagreed with the party endorsed. It's a big bad world out there and companies and organisations have been politically involved for a long time now - they pay taxes too so why shouldn't they get a say.

if you want to be technical it's actually a survey;)

spot on. Keep the politics out of sport.

Well the sign-writing the other day said 'vote no' not 'respond no on your survey'. If you want to play the semantics card - a vote is defined as 'a formal expression of opinion or choice' - pretty sure asking my opinion on something and getting me to tick a box is a vote.

And yeah we should keep politics out of sport - no good ever comes from it...

Sigh.

Thanks 89Adopter. It didn't work but thanks for trying.
