We had a meeting of the Wine Appreciation Society last night.

We voted to publish a stance on this issue but Andy knocked over a bottle of red and the written motion was ruined.

It was a Coonawarra Cabernet too from 2002, what a waste.

Andy Gowers?

I would much rather Hawthorn and the AFL keep their noses out of political issues.

Sport should be about sport, not politics, moral & social issues. I watch sport to forget about all that crap not to be reminded of it and less still to have people preaching their views on those issues.

It would be nice if we could all unite in the remembrance that we are all equal - in our hatred of Essendon.

If you were a long standing Gold Member who's passionate enough to be on BF, and gay, would you like your club to support you on an issue of equality. Asking for a friend ;)

Just don't forget this has been a personal and hurtful issue for some of us. It would've been nice to settle it without strangers debating the validity of my long term relationship.

You know the club speaks out in support of lots of causes. Depression, bullying, family violence etc. So why shouldn't it come out and make a stance on this issue.

Some issues are important and require good people to stand up in support of other people.

None of those issues are decisive

So much anger on this thread, not doing anyone any good. Lets get along guys.

Go hawks

This isn't an issue of right versus left, or labor / liberal or anything along those lines, so it's not really a political issue in the technical sense. It's also not a 'vote', but a survey, and there's no guarantee either result will mean anything.

That said, I would be thrilled to see the Hawks come out and support the Yes campaign, but I do find the way people are demanding that organisations do so a bit much, and ends up pushing people the other way.

Not really. There are plenty who argue that family violence is too skewed in the directon of women. There are people who say bullying is just kids who aren't tough enough and should 'take a spoonful of cement'. There are people who say depression isn't a valid mental illness and it's just people who want to be victims or again aren't mentally tough enough.

In the age of the internet basically any issue is divisive and you will find hardened acolytes who will smash the caps lock key like it is a punching bag at the drop of the hat.

A survey is a vote, and a non-binding vote is a survey. It's the same thing. It's like when the Herald Sun put a non-scientific poll on their website or when ACA used to do their 'ring this 1900 number to help us raise money' to vote on hot-button issues that their viewership would knowingly side overwhelmingly on one side for. I get that it is not in any way binding like a referendum would be - but the core of the survey is still to vote on something one way or another. As I said - the campaigns for both sides are usually saying 'vote yes' or 'vote no' - not 'when surveyed answer yes/no'.

You're right on the making demands of an organisations and for it to be all a bit counterproductive. That said - I still support any enterprise to get vocal on issues - even if I disagree with them. Companies and organisations have as much right to free speech (within the constraints allowed by law) as do any other citizen.

You wont find 20% of people with those views, let alone 40% like ssm, sick of the anger this is bringing, someone just threatened to bomb afl house for ** sake

Doesn't need to be close to a plurality of opinion for something to be divisive though. A recent poll only showed 16% supporting a change in date of Australia Day - but that argument is divisive as hell.

Still not the same level of hate. People wanting the date the same wouldnt be ridiculed as racist by the majority of the population or risk losing their jobs etc

I went to xavier college and was proud that they were first big catholic school to basically openly encourage yes vote, but that is a far more relevant institution to make a stance

Had a read back through the thread...

Special note for those who think the AFL shouldn't involve themselves in Politics, I have two things for you to contemplate.

1. Equality isn't politics. It's basic human kindness. If you think treating people equal is political, you're a campaigner.

2. You should probably never cheer an Aboriginal AFL player.
