Reading the. Herald Sun online Dermott Brereton John Anderson and Mark Robinson decided to update the team of the century and left Haydon Bunton out. Even though it is not official it is a disgrace a 3 time Brownlow and Sandover medalist has been left out. Why do we need to change history why don't they make a team of the last 20 years. While we are talking team of the century the modern players are always remembered. Look at ours one person was picked from our greatest era not that I don't rate the players that were picked it is only second nature to pick players from living memory than in the record books.
APart from Bunton going Kevin Murray was going to be out but because he complained before when this exercise was done before Robbo left him in. This just shows our flawed the exercise is.

They only did it as a bit of fun / to create controversy / sell papers.

Still it is ridiculous that Bunton is not in. 3 Brownlow Medals, a very close second and 3 Sandover Medals means he has to go down in history as one of the greatest players of all time, perhaps even the greatest.

As has been said, why update at all? It's the "team of the century" for a reason, that reason being that the league had run for 100 years at the time, if I'm not mistaken. It doesn't actually make sense to change it at all. And yeah, the problem with such an act is that the players of recent times will be better remembered, both because of their recentness and because of the availability of watching footage of them playing (correct me if I'm wrong, isn't there only one piece of footage of Bunton?).

Agree on the ridiculousness of it.

Who are Jon Anderson and Mark Robinson that they should be listened to anyway? It just a personal opinion.

So in my view, I'd certainly have Haydn Bunton in any Team of the Century from 1914-2014 or 1896-1996 or 1901 - 2000.

Interesting the backlash they had but if you have a close look at their team they were only picking players during their time on Earth, not before hand so it was all anecdotal

He was a floorwalker (read security) at Foy and Gibson. My mum thought him too pretty, and up himself. My father, till his death in 2000, thought him the best footballer ever. Despite many other disagreements on a diversity of issues with my father, his assessment of sportsmen was faultless. For him, it was Bunton, and then the rest, foundering in his wake. This is not open for discussion.

Edit: Though my dad never played in the ones, he played at Fitzroy in the seconds, at the same time Bunton was starting his career. A knee cartilage injury saw an the end to that adventure.
