HDFL Season 2025

Senior footy prediction: must say this is based on clubs social media posts which some clubs are better at than others. Also based on local water cooler talk.

Top 3 in no particular order:

HB: Get Simon close back but no other serious recruits, there best 5 players are older again with a fare drop off after that. Similar to last year. Up to the rest of the comp to rise to there standard.

NQ: picked up some good players but no better than the talent they already have. On paper they were more talented than HB last year. How do they maximise that talent? If they can maximise that then they should win it. They’ve got guns everywhere.

Laharum: well coached. Last year maximised the talent from the list they had which was a bunch of hard nosed types and were hard to play against. Have picked up a few classy players in the offseason. Impressive how quickly this club has been able to turn things round.

Next two: not far off top 3 at all.

Pimp: will be similar to last year? Lost one or two. Gained one or two? Will be better under guyro in second year. They are quite consistent across the field but just lack that absolute 1-2 a graders that the top teams have.

Swifts: well coached and were very close last year fighting against nq to be the challenger to HB. Handy midfield pickup in meantell but you simply can’t replace sommers. They’ve tried to by bringing in Motton but sommers is irreplaceable.

Next four: will be actually really good teams and be not far off the top 5 sides, just not quite good enough.

Rup: a bunch of key senior players left at end of last year and things were dire but weve managed to rally and bring in a bunch of recruits. Not all will play every week but should be competitive this year.

TL: weren’t too bad last year and have recruited quite well. This is going off talk as there social media pages aren’t public. Could be better or worse than this prediction

Edenhope: lost a high number of there best senior players. Then looking at socials they’ve just gone and paid big bucks to a bunch of mercenaries to top them up. Those players might assist with the win/ loss ratio this year but it’s very shortsighted.

KLU: seem like a good club with a good culture but just battle with the tyranny of distance. They have picked up some high quality recruits which will give them a big boost but the drop off from there top players is steep.

Bottom 2:

Natimuk: coming from a bad year last year have recruited a lot of depth players. Struggled for reserves numbers last year so they had to start somewhere. Not sure why they reappointed there senior coach but regardless should be more competitive in 2025

Kalkee: lost a few of there top senior players. Hard to say if any recruits as no active socials. Senior team will be average this year but they will be ok. Proud club, swings and roundabouts.

Junior footy

Who knows what will happen. There doesn’t seem to be enough juniors to cover both leagues. Not just footy either. Lots of clubs can’t put all netball teams on the court.

Not against the old Sunday league but how would clubs cope without there junior grades if that change happened?

Most clubs depend on the juniors coming through to play reserves/ seniors. Without this clubs must pay recruits and this is now long out of control. Kids that have never played a senior game expect $300-$400 a game and they get it!

The money Natimuk are playing the likes of Clarke, Lupton, Harris and even Billy Taylor seems outrageous. Definitely over inflated especially for one that hasn't even played senior footy.

Have seen Kalkee announce the signing of 3 recruits out of Geelong this morning on their socials.

Don't know much about them but having experienced players from a larger/better quality league will really help us

The HDFNL Junior comps look to be on their knees. There won't be any coming back from this. Restructuring/Merging the only options with the kids just not playing anymore.

This is where things are currently.

Football

U17s - Natimuk no team. Edenhope/KL joint side.

U14s - Edenhope/KL & Rup/TL joint sides. Pimpinio struggling to get a side.

U11s - No HB

U8s - No HB, Natimuk, TL. Possibly Rup.

With the current draw Rup U17s would only have games in Rd 2 & Rd 6 to start the year with byes, Easter & games against the Edenhope, KL, Natimuk. This could see kids jump to Min/Murtoa or Lexton Plains to get games of footy. Maybe not see them play at Rup again.

The U14s is worse. With no home games against the four merged teams it will have a huge affect on kids getting games to play. Will also have flow on to affects club gate takings.

Netball:

U17s - No NQ

U15s - No NQ, KL

U13s - No KL

How Kaniva/Leeor are still a viable club without 4 juniors teams is beyond me. Sad to see NQ unable to get teams on the court too.

Krikey, we all know junior footy is struggling but now netball too and NQ of all clubs? Aren’t they usually pretty strong on that front?

District and wimmera leagues need to join and play on sundays, puts pressure on volunteers who are involved with Senior teams but only way fwd, maybe it helps some clubs merge if they start with there junior teams. Might stop the demons and saints from targeting the best District junior players as well.

Be careful what you wish for. Over Shepparton way, district clubs are trying to get their juniors OUT of the Sunday Junior League as the major leagues had the monopoly on the junior players.
