Does anyone actually believe this as a genuine reason players would choose a club? Apart from supporters desperately trying to clutch on to something to get a good player to sign for them.

Exhibit a) Isaac Smith. Was one of the most one eyed Carlton supporters going round. After however many premierships with Hawthorn does anyone believe he would give two shits about Carlton?

Obviously if he got traded to them he would mention it in a presser, but I can guarantee he would also say of any club he got traded to 'they are just a great club bla bla bla.'

Once these guys are playing at the highest level their perception changes. It's no longer one of idolisation, but rather a competitor.

I haven't seen this as a thread, apologies if it exists.

Having said this, I did hear that Kelly played halftime for Auskick in 2004 at an Essendon game (wearing Joe Misiti's no 24) and instantly fell in love with the club and is destined to return.

You mean Josh Kelly mightn't go to North?
I actually started this after reading something about Zaharakis not leaving Essendon for an offer $300,000 less because he supported Essendon as a kid. I do believe it's different if you get drafted to the club you supported, as there aren't any ties to any other club. Still, find me someone who wouldn't take a 160% pay rise to go to a competitor.

Half the players these days didn't even grow up following the AFL

Are you sure? This generation seems to be the start of the generation that had so much better access to games without needing to go.

They all seem to be NBA fans. Coincides with the large average player height increase that has occurred in the last 15 years I guess.

Josh Gibson supported the Hawks. As did Paul Salmon. Paul Salmon has stated in interviews he was off to Geelong until the Hawks recruiter mentioned he would be playing for the club he supported as a kid. Said it did sway his decision to join the Hawks. Pleased he did, as he was 1 of the few delights watching in the middle 90's!
