I was at the game on Sunday and I can assure all those doubters that Sean Marty Lockhart of Ireland put a big headbutt on Ryan O'Keefe. Of course, the Irish press has not mentioned this even though RTE (Irish national broacaster) pundits condemned the action during the game.

The press coverage over here of the International rules is totally biased and hypocritical. Not one article has mentioned the cheapshots dished out by the Irish players. The first punch thrown in the match was by Paul Galvin (a known thug) of Ireland on Chance Bateman before the tip off. Next offense which led to the brawl was the Irish player flying in with the knees on the Aussie player on the ground. The next offense was again by an Irish player (Shane Ryan) who went in with the boot on an Aussie on the ground. The offense after that was the headbutt I mentioned previously.

Why is noone condemning the Irish? Why are they allowed to cry like babies and treat the officials with complete disrespect? Sean Boylan's comments after the game were a bloody disgrace. He was actually criticised the bringing thuggery into the GAA during his stint as a manager.

The only Irish media person who has copped on has stated the following:
McHugh says Boylan got it wrong

07 November 2006

Former Donegal star and current media pundit Martin McHugh has accused Sean Boylan of "erecting a smokescreen" to try and deflect attention away from Ireland’s poor display in last Sunday’s second International Rules test against the Australians.

Writing in his column in the Daily Star newspaper, McHugh says the Irish manager can’t get away with laying the blame on the referees, the tackle on Graham Geraghty and the fighting which took place for Ireland’s convincing defeat.

The Donegal native claims that Boylan is "trying to cover up the fact that Ireland got hammered off the park and he picked the wrong players."

McHugh also claimed that Sunday saw a badly coached Ireland team in action.

You could only assure us all if you not only saw it but had a clear view of it because you would have been some distance away and it possibly occurred in a mellee. The trouble with seeing something from a distance is that you can get it wrong so easily. How often have you watched something then seen a replay and it looks very different ? I saw Grinter’s punch on Wallace from ground level on the members wing at the Western Oval but my attention was really on the play and the ball, not Grinter and Wallace. My first impression was that it was accidental and in play ! The replay showed circumstances entirely different. Unfortunately for this debate, it wasn’t shown on television. It wouldn’t surprise me if Lockhart did because O’Keefe plays an in your face game against the Irish (he doesn’t against AFL players) but if it did, I’d bet it occurred because O’Keefe was in Lockhart’s face. I'd also bet that O'Keefe was careful not to get into anyone's face after that. I’d be interested in your account however what worries me about it would be how you describe events that were on TV being

(a) the Irish player flying in with the knees on the Aussie player on the ground.. Assuming you mean O’Mahoney on Lappin, the vision shows that O’Mahoney landed on Lappins back at the end of a spoiling contest. Your account suggests that Lappin was lying on the ground and O’Mahoney flew in and hit him with his knees;

(b) The next offense was again by an Irish player (Shane Ryan) who went in with the boot on an Aussie on the ground. The vision shows the ball in contest. Ryan attempted to kick it off the ground with his left foot to his (Ryan’s) right. Brown tried to either stoop to pick it up or to dive on it. When Ryan’s foot struck Brown, the latter was still on his feet. Your account suggests that Brown was on the ground and that Ryan simply kicked him.

Anyone reading or listening to your account of a headbutt you claim to have seen would be entitled to be skeptical.

You're full of it.

You're skeptical because you refuse to acknowledge the Irish cheap shot thuggery, while stating that legal, in play incidents involving the Aussies are the end of the world.

As for your point A - there was no contest, let alone and attempted spoil. The ball was marked and held without any contest, and then your little bitch came in with his knees.

At least McHugh has half a brain, if the series dies, blame Boylan. Weakest, softest prick of a Coach I've seen in a while. Smashed in the fights which they provoked, smashed on the scoreboard, and all he does is whinge about us being bullies.

Probably everything that the Irish did wrong could probably be traced back to the Aussies somehow. If the Irish break the rules, it is only fair to assume that an Australian made them do it.

i watched game 1 and was amazed at how the Irish boys were sticking it right into the Aussies...i would have thought they would stick to the speed and skill approach which has held them in good stead in the past

i was also amazed at how tolerant the Aussie boys were but not at all surprised they came to play in game 2

if you grab a tiger by the tail etc...

That must have been happening off the ball because there was nothing like that on the TV. Quatermain must have changed his style of commentating between the two games because he talked a lot about incidents not on screen during the second test but none at all during the first test.

All history is going to show is that the Aussies humiliated the Irish in game 2 to win the series. :D

There was a bit of fisticuffs and the like during the game.

The Irish coach ended up looking like an absolute tool and one of the best whingers to grace the planet.

Hopefully he is banned from ever participating again. We don't need people like that.

All this talk of the series being over, well I'll believe it when I see it. Money talks and 80 000 fans is a lot of money. Unfortunately because of all the hysteria, the Irish have put themselves in the position where they must be on their best behaviour otherwise even the Irish media will jump all over them and expose them as hypocrites.

History is far more likely to record it as the game where violence led to the demise of the competition.

No, people will look at the score and say, "Sheesh, that Irish team were really smashed. Looks like they took their bat and ball and went home after that flogging. Can't blame them for not wanting to play again". ;)

The violence will be forgotten and the Irish will look like sooks. Sorry, but it's true. Except for you, as you continue to look at things through rose coloured glasses.

Summed up perfectly.

They are only whinging because the lost the fight, then gave up in the game.
All the Aussies did was hit back harder than they expected.

i just watch the game for the first time this morning, downloaded the irish commentry version and the irish commentaters were saying how thuggish and stupid the irish players were being. I saw a feww aussies wretling but it was only the irish throwing punches, putting players in headlocks, coming in late with the knees....

Last weeks news...like Fevola...noone is interested anymore.

All thats left is for a few pimply faced teenies needing a pride injection to call the ozzies roooooly rooooly tough....and mention how the Irish are soft.

Rivetting stuff.
