Heart Issues With Players?

Not having a crack at your point but just got to mention I watched the Geelong demolition of port in the gf. Every cats player looked like they had about 10 kgs on their port opponents... and who was waiting on the boundary for the cats players when they came off, none other than the weapon.

In hindsight that whole cats setup stinks.
Yeah they all looked like this

Yeah none of those guys were bigger than westhoff..

And I suppose the weapon and dank were just at Geelong with bomber Thompson to keep things as above board as possible.
100% stinks.
Stinks even more with the recent revelations of Bomber.

In a league with 600+ players, a few having heart issues here and there isn't surprising. Athletes are people too, and people have medical conditions occasionally.

Mystery solved.
Many published studies confirm the belief that long-term endurance exercise increases the risk for arrhythmia and/or tachycardia.

As AFL clubs demand more and more from players endurance wise, this is no surprise.

Ports miraculous fitness in 2014.

It wouldn’t surprise me.

I’ll see if I could dig up a thread I started on the port board. It was about a conversation with an AFL official (junior) who worked in SA and WA footy clubs.

It was around the time Port was shit, so pre the fitness boom. It was suggested some assistants were smoking dope around the club and then went on about the Eagles players during their illicit drug days.

She went on to discuss the dons like drug program, pre dons saga and mentioned three clubs. interestingly the three clubs mentioned did not include the dons. So the dons were not alone in their activities.

I wonder if the AFL will ever disclose the extent of drug programs within the league back then and probably still today.

Clubs and players have many drugs that are approved to use pre game to get them an additional 1-2% performance. Whether its drinking power drinks, using asma inhalers to open the airways more there are lots of options.

No doubt clubs and players are pushing hard in every legal way they can. Is this a contributing factor? Im not a doctor so just asking the question.

Maybe the AFL should start reducing these currently 'legal' supplements so players aren't as 'super charged' as they are today.

Before something terrible happens.

I know this isn't what the thread is about, but surely abusing these players for these defects is well and truly out of bounds? A pathetic group of opposition fans at a recent pies game yelled out on a number of times things like "don't have a heart attack Stephenson" "It's about to pop Stephenson, call the ambulance". Would hate to think a parent of the player would hear stuff like that.

That's not cool

You clearly don't have a clue.
No. No idea. As an (former) footballer with both recurring arrhythmia and tachycardia and no clear trigger, I'll have to ask my specialist if its simply anxiety. I might be able come off the beta blockers and forget about undertaking a catheter ablation.

Well said.

Very selective listing.

Most of your players were massive. Not suggesting anything. Just what it was.

Like who?

When I think of massive muscled players, Scarlett doesn’t come to mind. Or Harley, Corey, Bartel, Kelly, etc etc. None of Geelongs midfielders were any bigger then any other good midfielders at the time; Corey basically has the same build as Simon Black. And Mooney wasn’t massive for a full forward compared to Brown or Franklin or Hawkins now.

I know you are most likely taking the piss but there was nothing about Geelongs team size wise that sets them apart from other premiership teams.

What's this new craze of players getting 'shortness of breath', 'irregular heartbeat' and other unexplained heart issues?

Is this new? Or has it always happened and we only hear about it now because of the access to clubs?

Surely this is unusual? Are the players pushing too hard? Are they taking supplements?

Very odd, and quite concerning.

I didn't think you watched footy anymore?

Its probably not all that uncommon with the general population (in terms of less than 10 players out of the 700+ in the AFL having it).
Its just that we 1. don't do anywhere near the same amount of physical activity as AFL players so don't trigger it and 2. aren't constantly monitored like AFL players.

So because you have a genuine heart issue anxiety can't trigger things like arrhythmia or heart palpitations? Lots of people who suffer from panic attacks think they're having a heart attack, it's much more common in young people than genuine heart issues like yours, Flog!

Anxiety may be a trigger, but it's not the cause.

And my point was about the studies that demonstrate the correlation between exercise and these abnormalities.

And we are talking about medically diagnosed conditions with qualified doctors, not you or I on the street with a stranger.

And I'll ignore your insult.

No heart issues at essendon.
Therefore no doping.
INNOCENT I tells ya, INNOCENT
one could argue we've had heart issues since pre-Dank when you watch our performances....

Horrifying stuff this.
I still remember watching a Spurs v Bolton game a number of years back and Fabrice Muamba just stopped in his tracks and collapsed.
Had a pretty bad heart attack. First time i realised that the heart can just as easily be overworked as it can be abused by sedentary lifestyles.

Hoping nothing too untoward for Kruze and he's back to full health soon.

Well there was that infamous article about The Weapon where one of the players is quoted as saying the first thing Bomber Thompson said when walked in the door was “You’re too small”...

On topic, Carlton rover Lyle Downs collapsed and died of a heart attack after a light training run at Princes Park nearly a hundred years ago.
