OMG SABRINA!!!! 10 year old version of myself loved that show a lot.....
Craig Ferguson FTW, I'm a Letterman fan but I honestly think he's better (might be the British humour thing).

looks like simpons at 6 is dead :(

The news content doesn't start until the end of January so maybe once Negus takes over at 6pm then The Simpsons might go to 6pm on Eleven.

What about Letterman? Will he still be on Channel 10 or removed completely?

Will still be on Ten.

What a day and age we live in. A far cry from even just a decade or so ago when we had bugger all stations to choose from. Even a lot of regional areas still get bugger all.

I have just spent Christmas in regional WA and the choices were: ABC1, WIN, GWN, SBS...all in fuzzy analogue. (Although I do enjoy regional advertising!:D)

Sure most of the stuff on the new channels is crap, but most of the time there is a good show on one of the channels at any one time.

Why are Australian networks even bothering?

All these channels are doing is spreading their few decent shows a little bit and padding out the rest of the schedule with garbage. I mean, do we really need a channel in HD that incessantly airs movies from the 1940's?

It would be cool if these channels were airing shows that were new from the US or even if they were repeats of decent shows. However, it seems they establish these new channels then throw garbage on them for the majority of the programming block.

I speculate that the government told them they could either make the digital channels themselves or the slots would be sold off to players not already in the market.

There's an embargo on new players for a few years after switchover. Introducing them now allows them to build a bit of an audience beforehand, and restrict new players from finding niches in the market.

I like it how GEM airs movies from the 40s-60s, although the file size really sucks so I can't keep them on my PVR for long. I wish they were on Go!

Agreed on the last para, but it is pretty evident that there will always be a market for 'live' TV, whether it be via free or paid means.

The FTA networks can make money out of these things, perhaps by throwing garbage on them for minimal cost. But having just dumped Foxtel from our household (you should see the offers they throw at you when you cancel!), the garbage isn't much different to the Fox garbage.

So if you have a PVR and can sort the wheat from the chaff (via something like IceTV or Tivo's EPG), then you can series link some half decent stuff when you want, and plus you've got the ability to network movies via the PVR / HTPC or via some other means like Apple TV style devices.

Plus, you can directly source some overseas content via the internet, such as NBA League Pass and watch the game you want when you want.

In addition, whist Fox has improved slightly in getting the best TV shows across from the US, it is still almost over and on DVD by the time it gets on air here. If some fat idiot with a laptop can get the show on line the next day (I'm looking in my own direction), then why can't a TV station do it (especially for something like Mad Men where it is already assumed it'll attract interest)?

The interest of the FTA networks in Foxtel has varied over time, but isn't all that much anymore relatively speaking. Them trying to kill Foxtel off isn't that surprising. They've been helped by ABC's 24 hours news channel basically acting like anyone of the 10 news channels on Fox.

In effect, the expansion of the FTA networks coupled with technology has made the decision for us to kick the expense of Fox to the kerb. A few extra footy games per year just doesn't make up for the expense. The likes of the "garbage channels" (which they arguably all are to some degree) can still filter through a few gems. And I think this Foxtel killing behaviour is very much the MO (the "siphoning" of sports is one area that they were worried about their domination, but the government has helped them out).

We'll still watch 'live' TV. They are just want to make sure there are ads in them!

was announced mid year that 10 would open a 2nd network.

They are making their SD channel a news based channel (with 1 or two fillers) whilst 11 is going to be purely for entertainment

Their SD secondary channel is going to be Eleven. Their HD channel is ONE HD.

No news channel, but they are doing news from 5pm for two hours (7pm Project is not News IMO).

Yeah the 2 / 2 & 1/2 hour news block is something like:

5:00-5:30 Ten News (National Focus)
5:30-6:00 Sports Tonight
6:00-6:30 6PM with George Negus (Current Affairs show)
6:30-7:00 Ten News (State Focused)
7:00-7:30 7PM Project (Comedic News Panel Show)

The News Channel Idea was from Packer buying into Ten, hating both One HD and ABC News 24 as they both cut into his Sky News / Fox Sport businesses and his plans to kill One HD and replace it with Sky News (because Free to Air really needs two 24hr News Channels)

Apart from sport Foxtel is basically a waste of money. From when I've watched its all been repeats of Law and Order, Friends and what ever else and now with these free channels you basically don't need it. If FTA stations start using their multi channels to broadcast sport properly I can see Foxtel getting a bit antsy about it. Its such a ripoff.

Yeah, Foxtel is a huge rip off and I only keep it because of the sport.

It's not so much the FTA channels that are drawing me away from it, more so the fact that I'm now downloading most TV shows off the net as soon as they are aired in the US and have the freedom of watching them when I want.

However, it does seem like the Pay TV channels take an extremely long time to get new series. In a lot of cases, they taken longer than FTA networks to start airing a new series and will often repeat episodes multiple times before going onto the next season. I would love to know why this is.

Genius stuff from channel 11. Craig Ferguson is going to be on at 11 farming AM. What bullshit, when I start uni I won't be able to watch, and when I'm not at uni will most likely be at work. I assume this will be the case for a lot of people. MORONSSRGO

Honestly, what I think happens is that the FTA networks buy the content from overseas and just sit on it, knowing full well they aren't going to show it. This stops Foxtel from being able to show it until the FTA rights expire.
