Here's a rule idea: out of bounds is a penaIty, every time

lets just erect firm, but springy, perspex around the entire oval and make that the boundary....No out of bounds at all...always play on ;)
We could also make it okay to smash players against the boundary...like ice hockey football ;)!!!
Imagine the tricks Cyril could do with rebounds at the correct angles :)

No thanks. Here's a better idea. Stop paying 'out on the full' when it accidently deflects off someone's boot. Drives me f**king insane.

I have a better rule

No rule changes for every three years ......let the game evolve naturally

We are trying to create a perfect game or perfect spectacle .....that's not good

Leave it alone.....it's not broken

My idea for a shit rule change thread is to legalise the throw.

We are basically half way there already. Especially teammates wresting the ball out of each other's hands in packs. That seems to never be paid. But there are others too.

To even things up, if tackled, your throw must be caught by a teammate on the full or it is HTB. No exceptions. That will stop all this dropping and fumbling on the ground business.

It would clean up a lot of the mess.

Every time a ball goes out, on the full or not, the last player to touch it, accidentally or not, is penalised and possession goes to the opposition. It would eliminate all these 50/50 'deliberate' calls (which I see quite a few of, and which give the umpires so much discretion), discourage a strategy of gaining ground by subtly letting it roll over (it's usually pretty obvious when it is deliberate), and encourage players to try to keep it in at all costs even more. Yes, I realise it would result in more turnovers, but maybe that's a good thing. It would take spoiling and hit-outs out of the game entirely, favouring attackers over defenders and resulting in a more open game.

It's already the case in most sports, and footy fields so are so bloody big. I mean I doubt it would happen, but that's one rule I wouldn't mind being changed, personally.

Shit idea. They trialled it in preseason games a few years ago and it's a disaster when the ball is in dispute along the boundary line. I've seen a couple of SANFL games televised and their rule works superbly. That's the way to go.

It's like we have to change something because we think things can be better

There's not much wrong with the game

We complain about stoppages .....but the players tackling ability is so good

If we paid every half dodgy disposal then we'd see a hundred free kicks a game

Leave the game alone please .....stop trying create the perfect look ...it won't happen

Supporters whine about rule changes, and then they make their own rule changes which are even more drastic than the ones that the AFL senior management make. Last touch out of bounds is so bad that it's not even worth getting angry over.

If you're gonna tinker with the deliberate OOB rule - a rule which is the umpy making a subjective call of what the offending player was thinking at a given moment and therefore imperfect in the first place - then possibly a fair starting point is to pay a free-handball to the opposition instead of a freekick.*

* Haven't thought through all the consequences, I'm just throwing it out there...

Conceptually makes sense, if you compare to soccer or even a lesser extent rugby. Not a stupid post at all.

But as i think you've alluded to, when you think through it it would probably be practically messy.
Just quickly workshopping it through:

* you'd probably get a slight rise in the number of deliberate OOB calls per game, due to the lower penalty for infringing
* the most likely outcome of a free-handball would be manning up in a 25m radius from the free-handball, resulting in a contest, congestion and then probably a ball-up. So effectively no different from a boundary throw-in really.

Nah make pac man style tunnels where the ball pops out on the other side of the ground.

Would reduce congestion.

This has not worked well in leagues where it has been tried. I don't think it's a good fit for our game.

It's the last minute of the Grand Final and it's a point the difference. Ball in the forward pocket of the team trailing. Forward leads in the race for the ball near the boundary. But he doesn't try to win possession, no, he knocks the ball backwards onto the foot of the pursuing defender who thus accidently kicks the ball across the line. From the resulting free kick trailing team kicks a goal, hits the front , siren. Is this how anyone wants a premiership decided?

How's that any different to the out on the full rule? We've seen that exact scenario a hundred times, youve just added the grand final for cheap dramatic effect.
