Does anyone remember an East Coast rapper named Tim Dog? He absolutely hated NWA and just basically ripped into them. Though I do recall he had respect for Ice Cube.

The Geto Boys and Scarface was pretty full on stuff - gangsta rap at its utmost - most of it fairly disturbing...

his song was "**** compton" from memory, and then he disappeared back to his hole.

i think he actually did a couple of melbourne gigs about 2 months ago.

I crush Ice Cube's, I'm cool with Ice-T
But NWA ain't s*** to me!
Dre, beating on Dee from Pump it Up!
Step to the Dog and get f***ed up!
...Shut ya mout before I come out stompin
Ay yo, Eazy - f*** Compton!

Lot of rappers bring out dis records but Tim Dog brought out a dis album!

Just about every track on 'Penicilin on Wax' disses Compton.

Captured the essence of the East v West rivalry at the time. Basically, the Native Tongues were blowing up at the same time as West Coast gangsta rap - which led to a perception that the West was 'harder.'

But back to Tim Dog - the production on 'POW' is gritty and raw. It was produced by Joe 'The Butcher' Nicolo, who also did Cypress Hill's first album, which is just as gritty and raw.

Alas, Tim Dog couldn't rhyme for s***. But he did make his mark with 'F*** Compton.'

I actually own POW on cassette - I used to give it a good ol' thashing as a teenage wigger - it's packed away in a shoebox in a cupboard somewhere, which I'll have to dig up and give it a listen for a bit of fun one of these days.

And if you remember the track 'Step to Me', he peaces out both Ice Cube & Ice T.

couple of other good aussie groups

TZU, the Herd, Combat Wombat, diafrix

Aussie acts
1200 Techniques, Hilltop Hoods

US acts
Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Ice T, Ice Cube, NWA, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, Eric B and Rakim, Run DMC, Jurassic 5, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Nas, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul

Edit: Forgot De La Soul!

I must say I seem to fit in to the "was better when I was younger" brigade. The commercialisation of rap has turned me off a lot of the popular stuff. I am picky though, in that I prefer the sample-based stuff like De La Soul and Eric B & Rakim. These days don't mind Jurassic 5, The Herd, Hilltop, Ugly Duckling and Koolism. Are Brand Nubian still putting stuff out? Also rap that's actually percussive and adds something to the music - Soup andChali 2na from J5 are great exponents of that. So many rappers' styles seem to be really sloppy these days. *sigh* must be getting old...
