To me the the thing that sums up Hird to a tee is his hug with Evans the night Evans had his breakdown.
How the hell can you convince a friend that was an ok thing to do and that they could exchange a hug later that day? He sure is a performer. Reminds me of the description of a sociopath at a funeral: notices everyone is crying, so thinks its a good idea to blend in and cry too. At the wake, hits on the widow as she is now obviously available.

I think he was just grateful.
Evans had worked tirelessly on the "joint investigation", and stood aside when it became clear to him that the investigation now had a goal, and that was hanging his mate.
He couldn't be a part of that, so he excused himself from a job he loved doing. Pretty good mate.
In fairness was asked questions about himself for 20 minutes.

It was interesting to compare it to the mid-week presser where he seemed very angry. Last night, he appeared to be defeated and as his body language suggested that he'd accepted his fate and was absolutely spent from the investigation.

See Sam Lane to have that incorrect perception (even shared by the rest of the dim post-match panel on CH7) to have the reality explained. when you find out, let us know, as she did her usual job of not explaining it at all last night.
