Re: Applicants

So it is McConnon. Good luck, think you may need it.

Your certainly right! However one must admire is courage for having a crack at the job knowing what he is up against. It would be easy for us to sit on here and bag him out, but at least he like Fox is having a go.

. Pretty exciting for the Hobart Football Club.

What do you mean???

Didnt they approach Mitch Hahn from the bulldogs, and were rejected.
So either they couldnt find anybody from the mainland to coach, or they realise that nobody would commit due the uncertainty of HFC in the TSL and just decided to find a local coach.

If HFC wanted to be successful and improve on and off the field, they needed a high profile coach who would encourage players to come to HFC.

Hahn's a fireman, and part of the deal of getting him to Hobart was to be able to get him a job with the Tasmanian Fire Service.
As the TFS have ZERO intake at this time, there wasn't a job for him to take up, so that kinda put the kibosh on the whole thing.
Shades of Simon Eishold from Melbourne in 1993 after Browning stood down from Hobart.
I know it's commonly known that the club has been run very, very poorly in previous years but it makes it extremely hard (right now) to shore up your future in this comp when the game's governing body seem to be deliberately moving the goalposts and place obstacles in your path every five minutes on you.
I know exactly what I reckon Hobart Football Club should do with AFL Tasmania in respecting to taking a stand with this lot, but that's for another day...
By the way, as far as I knew, this was Briggs's last year with Hobart anyway, it was mentioned up there during the year on more than one occasion.

why on earth would you stay at a club which is a rabble and wont be in the comp in 2 years time?
And which club are you currently tied up with SDog? Serious question.

I think that'll be a very sad loss for the Tigers.
It'd be disappointing to see him drop down to a lesser standard comp purely for more coin and it probably shows that he doesn't rate himself high enough to go further with his football because I think that guy can really play (I'm not alone either), as evidence by the fact that he won the club's best and fairest by a long, long, long, long way.
I still reckon if he does a really huge pre-season he can be an extremely valuable player in that comp especially with some experienced players around him, he has the size and a lot of mongrel in him too which is handy.

Yeah sorry his cuz! Wouldn't think it would just be coin for big wil! Certainly gave it everything during pre-season this year and set the standards with his own training. Great bloke around the club and was good for the young blokes. Will leave a massive hole for us!

Its been pretty quiet on the recruitment front, any names of new players? lots of rumours floating around, apparently 30-40 turned up for start of pre season but most were colts players? also have been told that Cleary and Briggs definately off to Nth Hobart and that at least another 6 regular senior players gone as well? Apparently 2 more players are going to Lauderdale with Cassidy and they are senior players, have met with club and have decided to move on and also heard Trent Harvey was going to retire but because so many older blokes going he is going to play again?
I hope MCconnon has some good players up his sleeve, the turnover seems too big to be a top 4 team.

gotta be worried for hobart must be hard to arttract blokes to the club with all the relocation talk ! dont kno why you would go up to tca when club may well not exist in a couple years

so cassidy briggs willing harvey cleary all gone and still question marks over hall

only ins being mentioned are thompson and a couple of norfolk boys but who knows how concrete this is

surely mcconnon given the gig on proviso he would bring 6 or 7 players

Re: Applicants

Whoever said anything about the top 4?

the context of my comment is that no team that turns over 1/3rd of its senior list every season will ever be a serious top 4 contender. If they had kept Fox as the senior coach the majority of the senior list would remain and there would be a natural progression in the ability to play the style of football Fox wanted, add 4-6 recruits and they could become a top 4 team. Clarence rarely turns over many players and the culture is a winning won because of it, they expect success, Hobart it appears may well have made a serious blunder as the new coach has to rebuild and start from scratch. Unless they get TSL recruits these SFL guys will struggle to build the base fitness levels alone to play a full season of TSL let alone be impact players. Oh well lets just see what happens but I am worried there are far too many changes

Re: Applicants

"These SFL guys"? You seemed to have some kind words for Gav Quirk a while back and he came to you blokes from the SFL. Thompson & Ross are better than most of your side and they have the fitness & ability to play TSL. Smithy is the only one who would need a massive pre-season

They may be fit but I believe you underestimate the fitness and strength levels required to play TSL footy. I was a bit dismissive myself till I heard and saw what the current Hobart players have done in recent years and the players themselves still admit that particularly strength levels and ability to stay over the ball is a real challenge. Smith wouldn't get through a pre season so he wont come down and why would they recruit him anyway. Have never see Ross and Thompson play live but they surely would already be playing TSL if it were that easy. Quirk made the transition because of his dedication I am told, he already was very fit when he arrived and built on it from there but he also struggled toward the end of the season from what I saw, the pace of the game caught up with him in the end I suspect, should be better again this season.

Well Thompson played for the devils in the VFL so one would think that the TSL wouldnt be a problem, can play. Ross won the 2011 SFL medal as the best player in the competition. But will miss 4 weeks due to suspension, very quick player would help Hobart. Matty Smith No Chance, to old to slow as shown in this years SFL grand final.

Perhaps if you did see them play then you'd know they're both very good players who wouldn't have any trouble slotting into the Hobart side. And maybe they haven't played TSL because they're happy at a great club that has been dominating for a few years? There are a number of blokes running around in the SFL who could make the jump. You're talking like these blokes would be going into the AFL.
