I work. I follow AFL & Cricket.

I feel as though I would like to insert a good hobby or two into my life. I listen to music and read lots, but this doesn’t feel like a hobby, rather just things you do.

There must be some suitable hobbies I could consider. When I think of hobbies I seem to shoot backwards in time to about 1930 where I might carefully assemble miniature replicas of Tiger Moths and Sopwith Camels, or make a stamp album.

What are some solid, contemporary hobbies that I might consider?

I collect footy games but you could argue that's not a good side hobby to have from my main hobby which is footy.

I have been adding a few more vinyl's over the years, and not just your common ones down at JB HI-FI

I'm trying to get back into drawing, i'm not overly arty but back when i was more active it was a nice activity to find something, draw it and try and perfect it in my own perfectionist way. Plus it was fun to do an odd stream of it and chuck some music on in the background while some folks watch

Oh yeah streaming is kinda a modern hobby. I play games for an audience and it's really helped find a good community of people that i'd consider life long friends. Even got a friend in America onto the dees in 2021 which has been fun. But yeah you could combine streaming with another hobby, that's like two hobbies at once, like when i art live.

I didn’t put down drawing / art stuff because I do it anyway and sometimes even get paid! But it’s a hard job to come to late, even if you are someone who draws, because younger artists have been raised on graphic software so I work much slower - and then don’t want to charge in the usual manner of hours spent because I’m taking so much time learning as I go.

I would like to look into animation. I’m considering even doing some animation units that are offered at RMIT and a few other places. I can make butterflies flap around nicely now, but I really need better skills to do anything more sophisticated

I have thought about getting into Whittling and stone carving/shaping and polishing
Sounds like a bit of skills training would be required to take that up as a hobby - this is assuming you’re new to this stuff.

Who was it on our board that is a cabinet-maker? That’s what I am doing in my next life I reckon. Smell of wood and varnish. Make beautiful things.

I think with rock stuff is a bit more.

But whittling would be an easier start, but some proper carving knives would make it easier

Current hobbies:
  • Downhill MTB riding
  • Golf
  • Veggie garden (Almost solely dedicated to Garlic in winter and tomatoes in summer and usually cucumbers for pickling)
  • Fermentation (To make pickles, sauerkraut, and ferment chillies to make fermented hot sauces)
  • Homemade sourdough from my starter
Not an exhaustive list be a few things I like to do. Might share some more later.

Edible hobbies are the best hobbies.

I didn’t think to list them as hobbies but I’ve kept a herb garden in my limited space even before COVID made it cool. And I grow tomatoes in pots - I got these cheap pallets sort of thing on wheels so if you have a shaded garden you can move the stuff around so it gets the most of the sun.

I cook like mad. I don’t know if that’s a hobby given you have to eat. But I really enjoy it

If we're going to add cooking as a hobby I'll need another post.

On Christmas Day, or generally?
I could work on general?

Stuff you do just on Christmas Day doesn’t really belong on a hobbies board. Otherwise you get people claiming credit for opening presents or shouting at the dog who just chewed through the BBQ hose

I wish the Big Interest Group (of "We Do Big Stuff on the Web" fame) had the ability to send push notifications. PG really needs to see this post.

Crisis averted.

We both need to give it some thought. The internet is such a changing landscape and needs true innovators

Fish unlucky not to get a mention here.
They will have their day. I reckon you lead with the big punch, get people onboard and then pitch the really timeless stuff. Post here if you’re having a nice day is rock solid gold.

Be nice if I had time for hobbies.

Used to do lots of stuff, most of it music related: I made guitar pedals/synthesizers/video effects units, bought and sold records, made records, and played records (for money). Built a studio but rarely use it outside of my income unfortunately.

Still a bit of a graffiti nerd- photographing it on the streets/trainlines and especially abandoned buildings, "Urban exploring" some people call it, lots of famous buildings and places in melbourne to check out and the list grows every day. Always collecting books & magazines on graff, pretty rare I do it myself though.

I like foraging in winter. Moved to a magic mushroom hotspot in Victoria and was vegetarian so it grew from there, can't say no to free food! Ties in nicely with being old and needing to exercise too, love coming back from a hike with a big pile of saffron milkcaps. Haven't killed anyone yet so I suppose it's going pretty well!

Main hobbies rn are whatever the kids are into: collecting NWOBHM CDs, watching Monster Trucks, spending money on Lego, and watching kaiju movies.

Kids at school next year, wife back to full-time work, so yeah, might start an art colony or get an aquarium or something.

This sounds like a really nice life.

Sensible move on your part - you only get one of them
