Hey guys, i'm seeing a lot of posts ripping into Hodgy recently and i'm bemused - i kinda feel like the one guy in the team who has enough brownie points to be allowed to go through a rough patch (whether form or injury is the reason)... remember he won us a GF, we can afford a few bad games from our champ.

Anyway, the point of this thread is that i miss our boy in the midfield. Remember a few yrs ago, 30+pos a game consistently, all quality. I feel like we need a bit of grunt in the midfield, and i think itd be good for him.

As for the hole he would leave... a toughnut like Brownie (or even Guerra) i reckon could play the same role - moreso brownie.

Over the years Hodge has set such high expectations and especially after last years finals performances mainly in the Prelim and the GF. But his performances this year have been well below expectations.

There is no such thing as brownie points to go through a rough patch. He is a professional player who does this full time. You look at all the greats before him and even in the AFL these days... Rarely they'll string back to back shockers together!

I was just thinking about makingthread like this.

Is it time we put Hodge back in the middle?

He isnt having much of an impact in the backline. I know we are down a few players back there but he is getting tagged every week down there. If he is put into the middle and we start dominating the centre of the ground, then that will relieve alot of pressure in the back half because the ball wont be there as much. There is nothing stopping him from playing in the middle and still drifting down back and playing a similar role to how he is now. The only thing being that he wont have a man holding his jumper where ever he goes. He is a smart enough player to do this.

Last year we were conceding the least amount of forward entries, almost entirely because of the fact of our pressure across the middle of the ground. With so many of our backman out, if we have our best players in the middle controlling the game, it will take alot of pressure of the backline because the ball wont be going in as much. I realise that Hodge is only 1 player and he wont solve everything but having our top 5 midfielders in at once is better then most teams.

Clearly you guys didn't see him in the middle last night. Handballing over his shoulder to no-one in particular. Twice.

The Hodge to the midfield threads are now getting silly. He is down on fitness, form and confidence. He would be a liability in the midfield.

If he's carrying something then rest him. He has been a passenger in 4 out of 7 games. We would be better off with a fit Morton or Kennedy than a lame Hodge. Especially a lame Hodge in the middle.

Does anybody on this forum understand what being INJURED means ?

He has been carrying an injury most of this year, shouldn't have played last week and clearly only remained on the ground last night because we had no one else.

He probably won't even be playing next week so any discussion about where he should play is hypothetical.

Gday hawks folk. We just had Hodge at the kids auskick & he looked fine. I read somewhere he has an adductor strain - ? Hope he moves to the midfield coz he's dragging my Dreamteam down (;)) I didn't talk to him so can't give you any news - other than the Mums loved him ... exit thread left.

I think Hodgey's lack of pre-season had a lot to do with his early round form, but obviously injury has taken it's toll on him the last couple of weeks. If he is to be out the next 2 weeks, then it's a big loss for us... but a necessary one.

We need Luke Hodge at his best and that will come hopefully after a couple of week's rest to get this injury right. I don't miss him in the midfield as I think he's been brilliant down back. We have a fantastic midfield when firing, so I still think Hodge is needed to marshall the troops down back.

Let's just see what happens in a few week's time when hopefully he'll be 100% again. I just don't think it's in the midfield where we need him.

Hodge is just injured. He cant even pivot properly !
Nothing to do with his overall skill or anything like that..

I heard on the radio this morning that Hodge is out for at least two weeks, with a groin strain. Just what we need with Changa and Stokes injured as well. I recommend we bring the BH Hawks in,(just kidding) and rest all of the AFL Hawk players, for a couple of weeks. I just don't think we can make the top 4 this year, but I am content that we won the flag last year.. Hopefully next year will bring us a less injured, fitter team to compete again..It is going to be a see saw this year..:(

I think its time to just rest all our injured players. No point in contesting the 2nd half of the year with a depleted side.
Essendon showed last night, rookies can stick it to the seniors!

Groin strain is good news imo . . . you just hope it's not a tear that requires surgery. Leave him out of the side for a few weeks, bring him back into the midfield or at half-forward.

Hodge to remain in defence. That was a vital part in winning however many games we won last year. Part of our structure would disappear taking his direction of our backline away. Brown should never have been moved forward. Buddy, Rough, Willo etc. can do it.

Injured or not he shouldn't be in the team. Badly needs a rest.

He is not fit enough to play midfield yet, he can barely run out a game on a flank, he really needs a few weeks on the sidelines... Is his OP flaring up again?

Maybe, maybe not too brownie points. The fact is hodge is down and its not becuase of a lack of trying. I think he is injured and deserves a time of to heal?

Thats hardly his fault he keeps getting picked.

Even clarkson said he has been injured the last few weeks but (inferred) the club needs him.

He is your best player or at least top 3, but at the moment playing maimed he is a liability. Get him fit and get him back in the team in a couple of weeks. Now you have some backs in surely you can spare a half fit Hodge.

It kind of is his fault. He keeps demanding to play. It's also the fault of the people who enable him to play when he should be resting.

I don't want him to play again until he's totally right. He hasn't been that effective playing with the injury, and as a result of playing him when he should have been resting, he's not going to be back to full fitness for quite a while. How much would we have missed him if he hadn't played the last 3 or 4 matches? Not that much. How much would we benefit from a fully fit Hodge back in the side? One hell of a lot. It's simply not worth it to play him injured if it delays his return to full fitness.

Also, I want to see him back in the midfield.

I think the club had some involvement.

Clarko said:
"Hodgy has been playing sore and we've probably got to make a decision over the course of the next week of whether we keep him going or give him a rest for two or three weeks to get it right," Clarkson said.

"He has an adductor strain. He's tried for the best part of a month to carry this injury and he's just been below his best."

Clarkson said the club had been desperate for Hodge to play on given the decimation of its backline.
