Spoke to a fellow Footscray supporter today. He was very down. Basically through his arms in the air and said "I give up!"
Talked about relying on hand outs, under funded Football Department. In-house fighting, Poor recruiting. Bad signings of poor cast offs from other teams. Moving home games. Poor draw. Low membership. Low home crowds. Nearly winning prelims etc.

As an exercise what can I tell this guy to turn him around. Can people give me some positives to counter these issues and turn this person into some one with some hope.

They could harden **** up

Just imagine how ****ing awesome it will be when we do finally win a GF. It will be insane. My head will explode with happiness.

You got to be kidding Igloo. Been following the dogs for 42 years now and haven't seen them in a GF.

The example of how we have been hit by the new clubs is another example of how the AFL makes it harder for us to be successful.

Well, if he just through his arms in the air he can't be a Bulldog supporter threw and threw. By the way, after he through his arms in the air... what did he catch them with?!

Exactly. 42 years of waiting. Won't you be ecstatic when we do win one?
It will be great.

Being the spelling Natzi I am at times, I couldn't help but point that all 4 of your through/threw's were the wrong ones...But yerr, we'll keep hope, I don't mind keeping the other clubs humble in that they shouldn't flipping complain when they haven't won a flag in --years... and when we finally get it, all the better feeling for us!!

I think Running Dog knows.... detector turned off tonight? :D

Gotta stay positive and optimistic - what other choice do we have? Other than barrack for another club...

(And it's Nazi, not Natzi :))

Epic LOL's :p

Or was it another deliberate mistake :)

The answer, my friend, is as beyondthevalleyofthedogs said, you just have to throw reason to the wind

HOPE

Hope is the emotional state which promotes the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life.[1] It is the "feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best" or the act of "look[ing] forward to with desire and reasonable confidence" or "feel[ing] that something desired may happen

F*** hope... We dont need it.

We just need the right coaching staff to steer us in the right direction and the team will do the rest.

Belief is the key word here.. not hope.. Hope is for pansy's clutching at straws.. Macca has the task of instilling belief into the players (that they can achieve greatness) and coaching them to an aggressive but honest brand of hard-nut footy.

* While on the topic of giving up, I'd rather not follow footy at all rather than support another club. Its what I know, its what I've lived. If I wanted to support another team based on premiership success, I would have done so 25 years ago.

..............

Depends whether you are talking about the supporters or the players :)

There is a lot to be encouraged about at the Whitten Oval right now!!!

1. The coach. By all accounts Brendan McCartney is a tactical genius, and a great motivater - what more could we have possibly asked for?!?!? Add to that, the fact that he is probably on about half of what Eade was on, that extra cash will be hopefully spent on the footy department. Would be great if we could snag Neil Craig as a Sports Science expert / Director of Football, or to let McCartney appoint some people he wants to bring in.

2. Our youth. We have some real talent on our hands, and it is in our best 22 (in my eyes):

FB: Morris, Lake/Markovic, Wood
HB: Murphy, Williams, Howard
C: Picken, Cross, Sherman
HF: Grant, Roughead, Higgins
FF: Dahlhaus, Jones, Cooney
Foll: Minson, Griffen, Boyd
Int: Wallis, Liberatore, Gia
Sub: Veszpremi

Looking at that team, 12 players of our 22 are young. Add to that Griffen, Minson, Sherman and Williams who are only mid-twenties, and things really are not too bad on the developing list front (with other exciting youth on the verge - Panos, etc).

Also from constant rumour, it appears we will have pick 11 at our disposal this year (if things are arranged with Sam Reid moving to GWS), which might mean we end up with Elliott Kavanagh. Exciting times...

In essence it comes down to a little from A and a little from B

Mate, I'm a Fitzroy supporter and I can tell I would give my left arm to still be dealing with " hand outs, under funded Football Department. In-house fighting, Poor recruiting. Bad signings of poor cast offs from other teams. Moving home games. Poor draw. Low membership. Low home crowds. Nearly winning prelims etc" if it meant that we were still running around in the AFL.

You've still got a club and that makes everything else worthwhile.

Well said, we should be gratefull for small mercies, it might not be as bad as its going to get

Seriously, anyone that reads an article about McCartney and isn't excited about what we may see in the next few years has shit for brains.

We may not have all the tools but reading how he wants us to play (contested ball, agressive etc etc) is making me drool to see his game plan over the next few years.
Whether it happens or not is another story but to lose faith now is plain dumb.

But, we already play a game based on contested footy.

I'm more interested in finding out how he can improve our skills as we were just about the worst kicking team this year and how he can help us to create more turn-overs when the opposition have the ball.

To be fair...."contested ball" hasn't been our problem. Defensive structure on the other hand......

True, it hasn't. What i really mean't that ALL players. I want to see Hill, Stack etc etc and every player on our list go in hard.

This is what makes Geelong, Pies so good. Their worst player will kill themselves to win a contest. Sounds like McCartney expects this also.

Also how he will try players in different positions.

Ultimately i think its stupid to lose hope now when we have a new coach who is going to be different and try some things which we have all pointed out on BF. OR maybe it just excites me a little too much :)
