How do we rate Newman as Captain?

For mine, I am actually quite disappointed with Newman this year. I know KJ has copped a barrage on this board but I think his onfield leadership has been missed, especially at crucial times in most matches.

When the chips have been down Newman hasn't really stood up to the plate as a Sam Mitchell, Chris Judd or Jonathan Brown would have.

The speed of the leader is the speed of the team so they say, so I think the club will have to have a good look at the captaincy when the season is done.

PS I still like Newman as a player but I think the whole captaincy thing may not be his bag.

Don't rate him at all, I was willing to give him a good chance but after yesterdays game I'm really convinced his is not captain material.

While J.Brown was gathering his boys together to tell them about not letting the game go to waste after selwoods effort, our boys where walking around with hands on hips.

Newman should have been doing the same with our boys telling them not to let Rance's effort go to waste.

When the captaincy was up for grabs last year I (after much consideration) found it tough to choose our next captain. Richo was the obvious choice for me for onfield examples, but given his age and his demeanour at times he was not going to be it.

The rest of the list did nothing to inspire me. Cotchin will hopefully take on this role in future but until then?????

Newman, Foley, Delidio & Tuck were really all their was to pick from.

Newman obviously won the lottery, poor bloke. Wrong time to get the job

Cogs in 2010 could be worth a go:thumbsu:

newman has it, no point in taking it off him after one year. i did not really want him as captain, now he has to perform every game or he will get critecised.

Not the type of captain who can stand up and change the course of a game. Speaks well but just isn't the type who can bust a game open. We haven't had an inspirational leader for decades. Knights included.

To me he seems a bit too quite. I like the idea of possibly looking at this Rance character in the future. He has only played a few games but in a few years I think he might have what it takes. He is definitely tough, not doubt about it. I like what I have seen so far, be it only a handful of games. maybe Cogs if things don't work out.

Let's hope Cogs does enough this year to be given his rightful mantle next year.

I was thinking as much, with a new coach, its on the cards that to make his stamp on the group that he in fact changes the leadership group...we dunno how newy is behind the scenes however on field he is behind last yrs performance where he was pretty consistent...in fact bloody average this year, I barely know he's out there:confused:

i dont rate him at all and he has shown absolutly no leadership out there both on and off the field. hes playing half as good as he was last year and looks disinterested. i hate him right now because he needs to show some fking balls and heart and fight for the richmond jumper and captancy with his life. im PISSED OFF CHRIS NEWMAN PICK UP YOUR GAME!!!!

I don't usually get sucked into arguments on this board, but I just can't help myself after reading possibly the most uninformed dribble in a long time.

Newman has been an outstanding captain this year and an inspired choice (I for one doubted him when selected). His passion and desire has been inspiring. If the rest of the team put in the effort he has, we'd be in a much better position.

He has given himself to the media after the most dissapointing of losses and spoken with the candour not usually expected from a footballer.

Unlike others, he has been able to walk off the field knowing that he did his job. Where fans around the ground have invariably sighed at Tambling's decision making, Bowden's lacksidasical nature, Deledio's need to show some assertiveness, Schultz's waste of ability, King's inspideness, etc etc I have never once heard a fan spit chips after Newman has touched the ball.

Sure, it would be great to have a captain that can kick the "captain's goal" but that happens in teams that get to within a postcode of the opposition. Can't blame Newman for Terry and co's sincerely crap training of junior players.

My two cents

Always makes me laugh how a captain is "rated" when we have no idea of his impact off the field, in the rooms, at training, team meetings etc. Tom Harley was rated the best captain in the league last year in a newspaper poll. For all we know he isn't doing anything different to Newman apart from playing in one of the best teams in history. I assume Sam Mitchell is now "the best captain" in the league. If you watch the replay of the Brisbane game (do yourself a favour though - don't) you'll see Newman go back with the flight of the ball a number of times. That's leadership ON THE FIELD. The criticism of Newman wouldn't get a hearing if we were winning. If he was Geelong's captain in '07 I bet they still would have won the flag.

its depressing he is our best option but its not his fault.

He would be celebrated if the two or three better choices were at our club and the club was playing well with him doing what he does well.

If a new coach made a change next year then he would cop it and continue to do his best.

I think Newman was the bext choice on our list as captain. Behind closed doors he is reported to be a very inspiring guy and is a great speaker to the group but his onfield leadership isn't the best. He does seem to be burdened a little by the title but I would stick with him for a few years.
I think Newman is no doubt trying hard, possibly to the point where it has taken the edge off his game a bit...that's normal. Look at the baptism of fire he has had! He'll work his way through it though. Very confident about that, a real blue collar worker with a touch of class - on and off the field.

Nice bloke, good kick maybe.....but a leader needs to be Influential, Inspirational and command respect......I don't think Newman has these traits.....

One of the things I find impossible to comment on because I do not know what he does around the club behind closed doors.
You don't have to be a bullocking J. Brown type to be a good captain.

What does Newman do genuinely well? It's still a mystery to me.

He's a failed midfielder because he's as slow as a wet week and has zero ball winning ability to make up for it, he's failed for over half a decade at shutting down anyone but the easiest of opponents, then when we give him the weakest forward he more often than not gives us almost no genuinely effective long rebound, and the only way he can carry the ball is sideways and slowly.

The best you can say about Newman is that he looks very stylish when kicking the ball to nowhere over and over again, and that he'd look perfectly at home wearing a hardhat while scarfing a pie.

I'm not going to comment on his off-field leadership because that's largely not something I'm privy to, but his onfield efforts smack of the same absolute zero we got from Johnson and Campbell before him. The last Richmond player I saw give a genuinely inspirational address to the playing group just prior to coming back from a break was Greg Stafford - a poached player.

Now he's fully over his leg injury, Newman should be traded if anyone is silly enough to offer an early 2nd round pick for him.

The fact when he gets it I say to myself CMON CAPTAIN suggests I dont have the belief in him, I just dont think he does enough out there wouldnt be suprised if the new coach changes the captaincy next season.

Just like Kayne Johnson hey Tug? Our senior leaders are doing such a stirling job on and off the field and it's showing up on our ladder position. Sorry, but for mine it's what happens on the field that matters most. They should be leading by example and they aren't.

We have the worst crop of on senior on field leaders in the competition. Apart from Richo, all the others just show up and get paid.

I'd make foley or lids captain next year if I was the new coach. Newman is just a plodder and gets arse r*ped by the small forwards he plays on.

Sorry but some of these comments are absolute garbage.

Chris Newman has never been a flashy player, he's 26 - why would you think he would be any different now he's captain? He was given the captaincy because he is CONSISTENT - a trait many Richmond players have lacked over the years. Newman rarely turns the ball over and gets his job done every week.

We don't need a superstar player to be captain - we need someone who knows what he's on about and has respect from ALL the players... Chris Newman without doubt has this. He is incredibly well liked by all the players, young and old and has been a captain at nearly every junior club coming through.

You cannot critise someone whose had nothing to work with all year.

And anyone who thinks Coughlan should be captain after everything he has been through over the past 3 years is clearly drunk - go have another beer, pass out and then wake up to yourself.

LOL. I agree. Let Cogs play footy. Jesus, we don't like heaping pressure on blokes do we? The poor bastard is back playing when a lesser man would have thrown the towel in a year ago. Just let the blokes try to reignite his career without having the weight of the world on his shoulders that they call the RFC captaincy.
