How do you swim?

I'd like to put some swimming into my exercise routine but what I am worried about is where to start. Yes I can swim but I can imagine the first time into the pool I'll be stuffed after 50 metres. I think I'll be too slow for the slowest lane.
Went for the first time yesterday, my first laps in probably eight years.

Swam 300 metres, was pretty puffed at the end. Got out and was so light-headed on the way to the change rooms, felt like I was going to pass out and throw up.

Top shit!

I took up swimming a few years ago, can only go in the warmer months where i am. Each year i pick a little bit up about improving my technique fitness(learnt abit in this thread)! been a few times this year, now the heats in im about to start trying at 8 times a fortnight swimming in tidal waters for around 400 meters!
first 3 weeks will be a struggle, but the body sculpting it will create is well worth it!
its a 10 k round trip on the pushy( i ride my bike to the beach and back)

Do you go to the gym at all too? Do you find swimming helps much in putting on any muscle or is it more about the cardio workout?

If you swim regulary enough you will end up with kick arse arms (like mine) and very broad shoulders. It's also great for core strength..:thumbsu:

Yeah. I guess I am mainly doing it for the cardio exercise, as I hate running, but this (combined with two-three sessions per week in the weights room) sounds good.

In terms of muscle building, like Freakie said, it really helps in achieving that V-shape.

On a related note, is it too late to sign up to waterpolo? Would love to play - somewhere around Essendon.

I hate running too- or more accurately cant run because of my asthma- i honestly cant run for more than a minute at a time no matter how fit I am.

X-trainers are a good alternative tho I find. And bikes.

And of course swimming. Might actually swing by a local outdoor pool this week after work one night. :thumbsu:

I use one of those door frames you can do push ups, dips, chin ups and such, i try to use it 3 times a week. I become very lean but with excentuated back muscles.
I also cycle for fun and like a kid jumping and stuff over kerbs, that develops my arse!

I suppose that is the key, enjoying your exercise!

I found running changed my body shape,to more stalk like rather than the v shape people swear by

I just done my swim, it was 36 degrees, done it at low tide......Was not as unfit as i thought even on the cycle home... but tommorrow will tell a tale!

Hahaha - the first time I swam 200m after a ten year break I did throw up !!!!!!

As for putting on muscle, I find that if you just do swimming on its own or maybe with cycling/running then it becomes nearaly all cardio - although your shoulders definitely do get stronger.

You don't see many muscle bound triathletes for example - they generally are all fairly lean.

However combine swimming with weights and you would be able to really stack it on I'd imagine.

Don't worry mate. I work as a lifeguard and see some interesting, to say the least, variations of freestyle from time to time. You won't be the odd one out.

I've always swam freestyle with my head above water(as in never putting it under whilst swimming unless I intend to dive down). Plenty of swimming lessons as a kid, pool & ocean & I don't remember anyone telling me not to do it so I probably developed an incorrect habbit.

Swam out to the reef & back @ Port Noarlunga (Southern Adelaide) many a times as a kid. Loads of fun. Can barely swim 50M now. Might have to change this. I can't stand the cold ocean though.

I pulled up ok today, been thinking about the efforts in improving my technique i worked on yesterday, tommorrow i'll go again (be abit cooler) next day ill do my resistance training and a 20 k power ride....

Suggest you guys get in practice for the Portsea Swim Classic next year. As much about the beers at the end as it is about the accomplishment of finishing the race. They've actually made the course a heap easier too, so a good chance for a beginner to have a bit of fun. If I've done it twice, anyone can!

a good way to build lung capacity and endurance is my doing a ladder program, we do it as apart of our footy cross training and it works well.
do it in a 25 meatre pool (easier if your starting out)
10 lap warm up =250m
then 2x200 8 laps 45 sec rest =400
then 4x100 4 laps 30 sec rest = 400
then 4x50 2 laps 30 sec rest = 200
then 8x25 on the minute =200
then work your way back up to the 200 increasing the rest by 10 secs per distance.
distance = 2450m at a reasonable intensity
the first couple of times it hurts but gets easier as you get fitter

Haven't done it for a few years, last time I raced it was an absolute shitfest to the first can! Still finished in the top 15 but it is demoralising when 14 y/o's outswim you!

Think about how the pros must feel when a 14-year-old appears on the world scene and swims faster than any other person in history.

EPO has alot to answer for...

I wouldn't think so, if you can swim that fast at that age then EPO probably has nothing to do with it. Swimmers like Thorpe, Jones and Kukla are just freaks of nature.

Is it possible to go from very little swimming ability to the ability to swim 400 meters by February?.

Swim twice a week and you'll do it easily nicky. In fact if your stroke is reasonable you could even be able to do 1km.
