has been steady at Mt Gravatt but not pouring, I was shocked as i drove into the city how heavy it was. Reminds me of about 2003/04 one summer, poured for days and one day it took me 6 hours to get from UQ to runcorn. So many roads blocked.

Getting a little worried about the creek behind my townhouse complex, getting pretty high at the moment.

Iconic Royal on the Park Hotel to be bulldozed for Brisbane Cross River underground rail

I have looked to a couple of sources for the meaning of Iconic and attempted to interpret what the Sub Editor was thinking in relation to the use of this word.

1. a picture, image, or other representation.
They could be onto something. They did post a picture/image after all but what did it represent to make it Iconic? I believe that it represents a subliminal thought on the part of a music loving sub editor with the thinking that one could well persuade the reader that the Royal On The Park is a very important representation of all that is important to the history of music in Brisbane as among others both Elton John and Duran Duran are reported to have stayed there. Plus the Oasis singer king hit one of his fans in the park across the road.

2. Eastern Church . a representation of some sacred personage, as Christ or a saint or angel, painted usually on a wood surface and venerated itself as sacred.
Could The Royal On The Park bear an uncanny resemblance to an eastern church in a style that has passed me by in my travels? Are there sacred representations within the various rooms of this building? Perhaps it is the venerated Gideons Bibles that should be furnished within each room?

3. Computers . a picture or symbol that appears on a monitor and is used to represent a command, as a file drawer to represent filing.
There is a hidden meaning to this that is not beyond comprehension.
Royal on the Park Hotel is HAL. The letter H is the first letter of the last name. The A appears twice hence it is number 2 in HAL with the L being last in the first word with the original first and last letters changing place.

4. Semiotics . a sign or representation that stands for its object by virtue of a resemblance or analogy to it.
I found out from Wiki that the term Semiotics was spelled semeiotics in Greek. Greek = σημειωτικός = semeiotikos = an interpreter of signs. There are pictures of the 74 floods in the foyer so by interpreting the current La Niña event along with the 74 flood pictures there is increasing the chance of cloud, rain and tropical cyclones in Queensland and these are likely to be present early next year. This could bring Tropical cyclones along with torrential rain. They are not common to reach as far south as Brisbane, but Tropical Cyclone Wanda did in January 1974 and did impact Brisbane. On average 1.2 cyclones pass within 500 kilometres of Brisbane each year

After deep thought I have come to the conclusion that 4 is the correct interpretation of the use of the word Iconic in the headline. The Courier Mail has been a noted mouth piece for the Real Estate industry so would never state outright that to purchase a million dollar property on the Corso is foolish even with a catastrophic flood soon to come. The La Niña effect is happening and they know the consequences. With that in mind I have decided that the use of nonsensical meaningless words in headlines prepares the populace subconsciously and in this case it is for a coming disaster. The Courier Mail is trying to prepare us for huge floods and we should all take heed. So when this thread asks How good is this rain?! I say not good at all. Batten down the hatches.

Here we go again...

How's everyone holding up?

Hasnt stopped here for days and it is SO heavy:eek:

On the Sunny Coast I saw more rain yesterday (in a full day) than I ever have before. Road closures everywhere. Thankfully mostly opened up again this morning, but worse expected tomorrow. Impressive seeing a creek rise >5m in a matter of hours.

Yep its been much heavier this year, today is just as heavy, if not worse than yesterday.
Unbelievable !

Might be opening a can of worms here but I cannot believe that 75% is now our Wivenhoe Dam capacity, any time we get a bit of rain, release the water!

Part politics, part PR, part scientifically valid, but I think it's a worthwhile exercise given the scientific data available. Combination of many factors - I won't bore you with all the science and admittedly I only have a broad brushtrokes knowledge, but it appears we're now into a negative or "cool" phase in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) which means I think water storage is less likely to be an issue.

Wivenhoe was never built for water storage, even though it doubles as that. It is first and foremost for flood mitigation. If lowering it to 75% during the wet season is what it takes then it's an economically-sound decision. I'm not sure when/if the decision will be made to lift the magical 75% back up to 100% - maybe May?

In regards to this rain, it's really lucky that the majority or the rainfall fell off the coast / over the Bay Islands. Could have been some deep poo otherwise. The big worry wasn't with the rain we've had - most forecasts were looking at big falls this weekend (which are probably less likely to happen as it stand now). And of course, we're only just getting cooking now with tropical cyclone season. With catchments primed, if a cyclone crosses anywhere south of Rockhampton, it usually means a shitload of rain for SEQ.
