How good was Sam Kekovich?

I knew Cyril. Can see his face right now. My father was Rob Hunter. He died in August unfortunately. The Field Officers Club - that and the blackwood at City Mutual are eternal memories. Bernie was the classic great mark but shite kick haha.

Bernie Mc, I have sent you a PM, as it's a bit off the topic of this thread.

On thread however, I was fortunate enough for my Dad to get me into the rooms after the 1974 Grand Final (despite the sad atmosphere which obviously existed there), and we had a chat with big Sammy.

He was lisping heavily due to the biggest fat lip you can imagine, through being belted all day (and as another poster noted he wasnt the provocator but nevertheless was constantly warned and targeted by that idiot umpire Robinson) by those three snipers Sheedy, Morris and Magee. I have hated Sheedy since that day. If I recall the three of them worked as a team on Sam, belting, wresting (illegaly) and smothering him every time the ball came his way.

I had never left a match so crushed, thinking that we would never get into another grand final, despite my Dad's encouragement that we would be back there again. Was wrapt that Sam could play his part the following year, which, by contrast, was close to the happiest day of my life!

I swear that to this day the umpires still warn the player who finally responds after being whacked, prodded and provoked behind play.

It reminds me of the old wrestling (with Jack Little) where the referee would be oblivious to the villain constantly wielding a metal object that he had hidden in his tights but would immediately pounce on the cleanskin for retaliating.

The wrestling referees were following a script. The umpires are following the Giesch's orders. Giesch's Geese.
