How good was the footy show

It started as a fresh idea reflecting the Club rooms of a footy club - gave players an opportunity to interact provide honest
opinion on games, exercise their humour and promote their causes.

Slowly morphed into a bullying misogynistic reflection of Newman’s twisted psyche.

His omnipresent dislike for The Age, Women in footy, Social justice, the poor, the homeless resulted in Street Talk becoming a tool to ridicule the disadvantaged.

What went un-mentioned,was Newman’s hypocrisy, having an affair with another man’s wife, driving a Ferrari while targeting the homeless and conducting a personal vendetta against Caroline Wilson…because she knew what a reptile he was.

So basically it went from good fun to a fascist state….with Maguire bailing because it stopped being good for his image…and Lyon not having the nuts to call out a psychopath.

Essential viewing for the first 10 years or so! Absolute juggernaut
Even the JB Gaz years were good and the Crawf run/ride was absolutely phenomenal

But geez it trailed off.. Hutch, Bec, Lehmo!
It deserved a more dignified death than it received

As gross as the show became in it's targeting of anyone who wasn't a privileged white male, the clips you see of players now and the lack of decent new talent shows that the industry misses the show. The Ch9 special wanted to portray the show's legacy as the charities and footy clubs it helped - I always thought its legacy was the opportunities it gave to players. Recent retirees turned commentators are just so rubbish now for not having those opportunities.

The special also didn't talk about how critical news was to the early days of the show, that's what made it must-watch in it's first ~5 years.

yes. it was in a time when access to stories and players and the like were limited to the news. It was groundbreaking in breaking news.
