How many weeks for Douglas?

I'm not convinced he made head contact based on the vision. Thought it was a classic bump. Wasn't dirty or weak in the slightest. BUT, considering Merrett clearly failed the concussion test, clearly part of his head was struck during the bump. Considering the outcome and Douglas electing to bump when he didn't HAVE to, probably 1 week. Cant be anymore than that because as a bump it was just about as fair and clean as they come.

Looks like there was some glancing contact, would be enough at that speed and force.

Could be concussed due to head movement with whiplash (enough to move the brain inside in the head) but it looks like he got knocked.
This. Really, main contact to body and the left arm glanced the head. This will be very interesting to see how it plays out

He lined up a player bent over going for the ball with no intention of going for the ball himself - all good unless it results in concussion.
1 week - unfortunate for everyone involved but thats the risk of choosing to bump, sometimes it goes wrong. Not saying I agree

I actually really liked that Douglas came in for a square up after merrett got all up in his grill.

Too often in footy these days you have mouthy guys that are mouthy because nobody puts them back in their place. The sledging and jumper punches and rubbing the head in the dirt and all that stuff - it really annoys me as a fan.

I don’t want to see guys get knocked out - the bump was a hard hit which I loved, but slightly mis-aimed and that’s why he should get suspended.

A week is fair. Merrett missed most of the match and may miss next week. Wouldn’t be right if the person that did it to him missed fewer games.

Clearly collects some of the head. Gone.

Really. There's nothing definitive in that still. There needs to be different angles before I'm convinced he got him high.

You ever been at a game and the play is on the other side of the ground and you go crook at your player for not chasing. You then see the replay either on the scoreboard or later on at home from a different angle and your player was actually 10 or 15m away and had no hope.

Looks can be deceiving.

Now you're being a dick. Cotchin actually went for the ball and collected the man at the same time. He also went in low himself and got possesion of the ball. Shiel actually continued to play and was involved with dishing off the ball to Ward for a goal. he later got polaxed again running into Astbury.

Douglas just passed the ball and went for the man. Merrett did not not participate in any other facet of the game.

Comparing the two is completely nonsensical and I can only think you are trolling.

Yeah, ok.

We like blokes to get white line fever and line up someone from 20m away?

We back to sniping are we?

Merrett not coming back due to concussion. "Oh, but Douglas did not him him in the head, it was a great bump." Ha, ha, big footy experts really know their stuff. Suck shit Douglas and have a holiday.

Oh so much hate, what happened? Did a crows supporter bang your girlfriend?

There is so much conjecture about this. You can see from the comments that people are arguing aggressively for and against a suspension and referring to lots of different lines of justification. The problem is that in essence, Douglas didn't really look to be out to perform a malicious act. He went for a hip and shoulder and it was unfortunate that the player was hit high. You can see both players crouched over the ball going for it. I don't think the intent is there, perhaps it may be deemed reckless and high, but i don't think he intended to go to hit him in the head.

There is so much confusion re these incidents, and they occur in split seconds. The AFL wants to stamp out head clashes yet it is going to be inevitable in some cases, like this one. You either make a blanket rule that you can't hit the head in any circumstance, so that includes pretty much outlawing the bump, or you don't and deal with these incidents occurring at random intervals.

I am not sure a lengthy ban solves anything, in fact it just seems to confuse more so as Douglas really didn't do anything but go for the ball or try and remove the player from reaching the ball.

It is still a grey area.

Concussion is caused by the brain making significant contact with skull not direct hit to head. If player x is running east and player y hits him coming west with enougb force, player x's body may stop in its tracks but the organs including the brain can still shift
A hit to the head will cause concussion. Give it a try

His arm clearly is making contact with his neck and head.

Its a poorly executed bump, needed to tuck the arm in and he probably misses the head.

One of the most effective, clean and fair bumps i have ever seen. It should be used in football text books...if we have fans thinking even for a second this bump was unfair then the game must remove all body contact from it immediatelyand become Gaelic football. This would please Gil no end, he wants a round ball game with no contact so he can take it overseas! The future of our game now lies in the hands of Michael Christian, IMO nothing should happen at all due to lack of evidence. There was no contact made to the head at all and Adelaide can easily prove that! He shouldn't even be cited!
