There are some gun midfielders in the comp that can shake a tag, week in and week out, and there are others that find it more difficult.

How do you think is the best way to shake a tag?

If you want to troll, go to bay 13 and make your own thread.

I'd like to read some intelligent discussion on this topic.

Cheers :thumbsu::)

edit: this was meant to go on the main afl board... can a mod please move it?

The only way is to be able to run them off their feet.

Gary Ablett 2007 is far better than Gary Ablett 2006, because he is fitter and taggers can not keep up with him.

S.Burgoyne hasnt run hard enough this season to be able to shake a tag.

K.Cornes is the best tagger because he is so fit and cant be out run.

My favourite new idea is to make Shaun our designated ruckman at centre bounces. The bounces never seem to fall in the circle anyway, and it gives him a clear couple of metres on his man.

Not that I completely disgree with you but how come a plodder like Ling does so well tagging?

Yep I agree that they have to be quite fit especially when lining up on guys like Cousins but to be a top notch tagger its got to be about the mental application, that and assistance from your teammates....

how to beat it - Leigh Brown ALMOST got it right against the Cats. :D

I think this has more merit than it first appears, well than what it first appeared to me. I wonder which coach will have enuff balls to implement the "Porthos Play" .....:)

Might become a tactic out of necessity one day if a few injuries hit a teams talls...

If you are talking about Shaun, the right way is what's been happening - putting him in the forward line. Either he beats his tagger and can get a goal/goal assist, or have more chance of getting a free, since the umpires pay more (soft) frees in the forward 50.

This week though I'd be tempted to line him up on Wells. I'm sure Rawlings would follow him, then we could either have a man free or ensure a crowded Roos forward line, both good options.

Ling is just clever how he goes about it. He is always blocking his opponents run and hangs on a fair bit. He tagged Harvey from North a couple of weeks ago and laidley moved Harvey forward because he didnt want Ling to drag him into Geelong's forward line. So he effectively had his best midfielder out of the play, just so that ling couldnt push forward. No surprise they lost by so much on that day.

It should be a really great example of tagging and breaking tags this weekend with two of the best taggers going around playing.

I think Cassisi will go to Harvey and he has also shown that he can clamp down on a player especially on Boomer.

Personally i think the best way to break a tag is to keep running as has been mentioned but also to send the targeted player to run with another opponent to create a double team.

Interesting snippet on this subject from the coaches association.

6. Dealing with Taggers:
The beat way a midfielder can beat a tagger is to run hard, run smart and when you get the footy make the tagger pay for dropping off you. Often a tagger will do a good job early in the game but as he gets tired and if the midfielder is persistent with this running he will start to win the ball. Mental toughness is crucial in dealing with taggers. If you the tagged player are having a quiet day you can still contribute by tackling, talking positively and constructively, chasing, blocking and smothering thus making a contribution to the team.

Often a tagger will have good fitness and be disciplined but not be a great ball winner or decision-maker. This is where the player being tagged must ensure that he controls his emotions and concentrates on reading the play and winning the ball in close, rather than running to space all the time and waiting for the ball to be kicked to him. His tagger will more than likely be with him.

Being tagged is a compliment, and as such your mental state should not be despondent and frustrated rather be confident that you are a good player and focus on the areas that have been mentioned that you can work on to beat your tagger.

I think this bit is pretty important out of that article...

Best way to beat a tagger is to turn the tagee into a tagger themselves. Either as a defensive flanker or as a midfielder.

eg Play SB on Harvey, or Jones.
